Fluffy Mordians?

Recommended Posts

This one is straightforward enough, what does everyone consider fluffy for a Mordian army?

I'm tempted to start some but I want to keep it fluffy, so using their preferred units/tactics without it getting too similar to my cadians (mostly infantry with tanks as fire support and not much moving due to born soldiers). Any suggestions welcome.

*whistles for Duz*

He’ll be along momentarily.

Infantry lines in base-to-base contact, FRFSRF, Officer Heavy, Commissars, Fix Bayonets.

Actually although a Commissar or two might not be amiss in a Mordian army they're already well disciplined enough not to need one. ;)

Fluff wise? Depends what theme you're going for?

Their home world is a perpetually dark hive world so I would imagine a lot of closed rank infantry training down Lasgun fire.

Although I don't recall seeing it in any of the codexes I've owned traditionally they preferred lascannons, grenade launchers and melta gunes. With the odd sprinkling of heavy bolters and autocannons.

If you would include vehicles I cant see why they wouldn't have access to a full scale armoured division.

Although again being a hive world I suspect my close ranged support would be their flavour. Eg. Punishers, demolishers, eradictors etc.

This is part lore, speculation and personal preference tthough. ;)

How would I play in game to reflect their background?

If it's a friendly match I'd probably have 6 squads with grenade launchers. If possible deployed with each squad in 2 ranks.

Maybe a couple of squads of veterans with lascannons and GLs or Melta (I know melta doesn't gel with static lascannons).

Plenty of officers and junior officers sprinkled around.

Flavour with some armoured support.

Personally I don't generally play my Mordians static. Given their RD allows them good overwatch I'm not afraid to slowly advance them up the field. Not having HWTs in the squads means you're not losing effectiveness as a result.

In fact a single 10man squad with move move move once helped me pull out a draw from defeat at a tournament.

Not sure if that helps?

I'm actually working on a "fluffy" Mordian list for a tournament in May. However my detachment are the remnants of a division that was engaged with Magnus and the TS on Mordian and all that remains are 30 loyal guardsmen and their commander. Having endured being all but wiped out and left to fend for themselves I'm taking them as a 30man conscripted squad. (And then rules wise probably using them as Catachan because the rest of the list doesn't make the best use of Mordian RDs.)

Edit

Mordian Glory might have more to say on the topic

Thanks for the advice so far guys. I'm thinking infantry squads (advancing up the field in formation) with a good sprinkling of officers and a couple of commissars, some veterans. Grenade launchers as special weapons. And then close support leman russ tanks (punisher, exterminator etc)

I personally enjoy running my tanks super aggressive (with tank tracks of course)

The best part is my opponents face when they got charge my Punisher and Demolisher / Plasmacutioner combo and I say that one is hitting on 5's and the other will be hitting on 4's :D

I'm basing this primarily off of the 3.5 Ed. IG codex and the IG RPG by fantasy flight games, with a bit of supposition on my part.

Generally, you're looking at squads that favor high quantities of lasgun volleys delivered at close range, followed by defensive bladework with their bayonets, relying on their firm discipline to hold the line. They favor the lascannon and meltagun because those weapons are ideal for anything that their lasguns are insufficient to tackle. They hold dense formations in order to provide the densest screen of lasfire possible and to ensure that no man fights alone. No Mordian fights alone, they are a cohesive unit that looks to support each other optimally.

Tank wise, Mordian is a very industrial world that equips their regiments well. While they do have armored and mechanized regiments that specialize in those other tactics, the amount of equipment allows them to better equip their infantry regiments as well. In this vein, most infantry platoons have an attached leman russ tank in order to provide close range support on the attack. This radically alters them from other regiments since it means that they're almost never without armored support, baring casualties taken during a campaign and the difficulties of resupply.

One thing that I get a lot from them is 1700-1800s era warfare where you had troops full of basic weapons (just lasguns) and then you supplement these guys with heavy support to carry the big guns (basilisks, Leman russes, etc).

From a modeling standpoint I think it would look really cool to have their heavy weapons on wheels. I think their old miniatures used to have that as well?

Thanks again for all the replies. I'm thinking in terms of structure, a company commander (with command squad) and a Lord Commissar as HQ and then 3 platoons of 2 infantry squads (with attached LTs (possibly with PCS) and a Leman Russ Exterminator or Eradicator) and some veterans with plasma guns (form firing squad goes here). In terms of warlord trait I'm thinking iron discipline, with the laurels as my relic. Infantry will get either grenade launchers or meltaguns, while all the officers will be carrying power swords (modeled as sabres). As I plan to advance them up the field, I think I'll leave out lascannons otherwise the playstyle gets too similar to my Kriegers.

If all goes well this will be a nice addition to my guard (Cadians for sitting and shooting, Krieg for an infantry advance with firesupport and Steel Legion for rapid mech assault).

In terms of models I was going to use Anvil but they don't have a torso like the old metals so I'll probably go with this:

Any more advice/lore appreciated

Mordians are great and all, but clearly Praetorians are better :tongue.:

It's the British accent that does it I think.

"I say, is that a Bloodthirster?"

Looks up from tea "Yes *sip* Yes I do believe it is"

Don't forget your flags. A command squad with Regimental Standard is a must take.

I'll definitely take banners in the command squads, but I'll take Prussians over British any day :)

Anvil stuff looks great and those would be a interesting and slightly different take on the traditional Mordian uniform but would look good!

Victoria Miniatures have some models that look closer to the original ones too, although might be a bit cost prohibitive at large volumes?

She also does weapon platforms on wheels too :tu:

I'd probably err away from Eradicator and Exterminators, only because their effectiveness isn't that great

Plasma veterans are a lot of fun, especially when ordered to execute characters ;)

Shhh, don't tell the other though...

Victoria is a bit too expensive for me and on the other side of the world, at least Anvil is next door.

I want to go with exterminators because of a story from the 5th ed dex where a group of outnumbered Mordians used a trio of exterminators to break the ork lines rout the waagh. The eradicator plays into the hive warfare idea too. I'm not really concerned with effectiveness

So here's the bones of the idea (based on a battalion detachment):

Company headquarters:

Commander with power sword plus command squad with banner and plasma guns

Lord Commissar with power sword and bolt pistol

Platoons (x3):

Commander with power sword.

2 infantry squads (1 with grenade launcher, the other with melta)

Support (attached to company HQ):

Veterans: Plasma guns.

Tanks (each of these attached to a platoon):

Punisher-storm bolter, heavy bolters

Eradicator-storm bolter, heavy bolters

Exterminator-lascannon, multi meltas

I may use the exterminator as a tank commander and add another russ. Also thinking of adding power swords to the sergeants. Vets can go in HQ platoon.

I don't care about effectiveness, just that it seems appropriate for Mordians based on their fighting style and fluff. Honestly not sure about the medic in terms of lore fitting, any C&C on lore suitability welcome. Army efficiency is not a concern

Edit: pcs scrapped due to lack of slots
