BA builders - contrasting terrain colours?

This is sort of a general forge question but a bit more specific to BA army builders...

I've ended up with a few kill team terrain odds and ends, most notably a pile of fuel drums (plus some of the ammo crates). Most of the 'stock' colours in GW for these feature bright red barrels and green crates (or vice versa).

Given that a BA army is largely... red... I'm curious to see if other Bangles owners have opted for other colours on their terrain bits for more contrast? A heap of 44gl drums IRL are close to ultramarine blue, and some of the GW ones for arena are shown in bright yellow. Black or silver might be an option, but don't exactly pop out against a cityscape terrain.

At this point I'm thinking I'll do quick line of masking tape and go for blue with a white stripe in the middle - but would be good to add a bit of variety if there are some other colour ideas?

I think you can go with any color on the drums/barrels and it will be good. Presently they are not painted based on their content, but rather depending on who is the owner or producer.
I assume your city scapes are dominantly grey? Yellows are great, but you know - yellow (a pain to paint unless you airbrush). All shades of reds and browns would look nice as well. Blue - why not? All those can be muted to match the ruins,  but still they will add some color variety.
I'm not a fan of steel barrels myself. Too plain. Definitely not contrasting in a grey environment.

Throw in a sample picture once you have some :)

Barrels come in all kinds of color schemes irl:

The top picture on the first link shows a blue-with-yellow-mid paint scheme, which imho would contrast nicely with BA.

Then again, with every company using their own scheme, the sky is the limit.

Here's a couple of images from a game I had last weekend. My group recently purchased some new gaming mats and this was a game with our matching scenery (yes, we're in the process of acquiring more, yes I lost against Tau Stealthsuit spam on it, and yes, we don't need to draw attention to it...)

What surprised me the most was how much my army "popped" on it. I've always done my bases with a rock/rubble top and green rim as I envisage them fighting on a world of ruins being reclaimed by nature. So to see them on a similar style mat and terrain was really nice.

When I eventually get around to doing my own terrain it will match my bases. In the unlikely event I paint terrain for my dusty Xenos collection that I never use, then it will match their bases (whatever that may be).

Thanks - think I'll end up with a mix of blue, dark green, yellow and possibly black fuel drums (with a few random white stripes); possibly randomly pick the colour for each barrel with D6 rolling to take any patterns out of it :-)

Those colours should keep them contrasted from the red BA marines but still with a few brighter colours compared to the cityscape they will sit on.

Jol - I do have a soft spot for the goblin green, but went for city greys & rubble rather than martian red a lot of BA seem to go for. I think it gives more contrast against both red AND death company blacks.

Old blog post but I ended up doing all my marine bases in grey (dawnstone mainly) to go with the road tiles I had done out of mdf. At some point I'll take photos of the army actually standing on the terrain :-)

I honestly wouldn't care too much about having general terrain contrast with your models. It's not just your army that uses it and you potentially will have more than one army eventually anyway.

  • 3 weeks later...

Not quite finished product yet, but this is what I ended up going with. Not too bad a mix of colours next to BA I think... enough darker tones with the blue and green, plus the obligatory Doom exploding barrels on the red & white stripe.

Yes, the paint job is somewhat shonky - it was something like 112 barrels in about 2 hours and my attention may have wandered a bit.

Plus I figure the most 'damaged' paint areas are going to be receiving heavy typhus corrosion...

Sadly yes - there isn’t a great way of masking off one colour (most of them are cast in groups) so brush was the go. In hindsight it would have been a bit quicker to do zenithal spray and use a couple washes, but probably not by much.

Still - couple of hours of game of thrones rewatching before new series and it’s not too bad.
