Librarian-Captain in psyker-heavy chapter?

Recommended Posts

I mean, The Blood Ravens of Dawn of War fame were notable in having their Chapter Master also being they Chief Librarian. Not to mention we have the Grey-knights who have their brother-captains though one could argue that is a special case.

I mean, if your chapter is Librarian heavy then it wouldn't be unlikely to have such an occurrence. By all accounts, Librarians are just kept doing the book keeping of the chapters history just so it keeps them away from their brothers (due to a natural unease of being around them I believe). However if your chapter is all about Psykers then go nuts.

Grey Knights are definitely a special case, but the Blood Ravens aren't, really. It's stated time and again that the Blood Angels and their successors (including my chapter, the Crimson Knights) are psyker-heavy, and that their incidence of psykers has only increased over time, which would mean I have every reason to have a particularly large Librarius as well as Librarians bleeding over into other positions, such as Captaincies.

I already have a somewhat deviant chapter, what with their 7th Company consisting entirely of Phobos models and Scouts, acting as a special-forces unit of sorts. I think having my Librarians and Captains be one and the same at times is reasonable, and I appreciate your feedback.

Only if the chapter doesn't care about following the Codex Astartes. However if they do that then everything is possible. Space Wolves for example have their Chaplain and their Apothecary be the same guy too.

The only problem I could see would be representing it on the table. You’d have to lose out on either the rerolls from a captain or the psychic powers from a librarian as you can’t have both on the same model. If that’s not a problem then go for it, it’s your chapter, there’s certainly precedent for it in the original Thousand Sons Legion (although we all know what happened there)

That's true. It's the kind of homegrown fluff you can't properly represent on the table. Maybe by giving a Blood Angels Captain the Soulwarden Warlord trait which allows him to deny one psychic power each turn, however that would take away lots of options since it would lock you into taking this one specific Warlord trait and it would make him only half a psyker ... the boring half you can't use actively. ^^

Canonically, the Blood Ravens have had Librarians act as "Force Commanders", leading elements of the chapter to war, and the Great Father, Azariah Vidya, did cover both the Chief Librarian and Chapter Master roles, way back when, but for the most part, even the Blood Ravens don't really combine the Librarian and Captain roles.

Is there any way to buff up a librarian using the CA character rules? I'm not all that familiar with them.

Yes, there are some psyker-specific upgrades in the character rules in CA2018, though I don't remember the specifics.

I think one is an extra "Deny the Witch" attempt, and one might be "know an extra power" but I'm not 100% sure.

I don't mean making him a better psyker, I mean giving him captain abilities.

I think you could give a Librarian pretty much everything you could give a Captain plus psychic stuff. The make your own characters are VERY basic. Anyway they aren't allowed for matched play since you can create some seriously broken characters easily. If you'd want to use such a character in your games you'd have to stick to open play or ask your opponent (which would fall under houseruling).

I mean, I'm working on some Death Guard home rules anyway (cough PLAGUE DAEMON ENGINES cough) so I can houserule a Librarian Captain, or just ignore the Captain rerolls, which I forget exist half the time anyway.

Also remember that the captain generally comes with an invulnerable save which non-terminator librarians tend to lack.

CA2018 character rules are open play only and only allow a character who is already a psyker to take options from the psyker table.

(The psyker table is pretty limited too: ban 1 power more, manifest 1 power more and know 1 power more.)

You could pick the

  • reroll to-hit rolls of 1 (in meelee) within 6"
  • reroll to-hit rolls of 1 (in shooting) within 6"

traits for emulating the buff aura of a captain, but the character customization system is rather imbalanced.

House ruling a librarian warlord to be targetable by the 'chapter master' stratagem could work though.
