New Black Legion Edge highlight

Recommended Posts

Whooopppsss Thanks haha

Yeaaah. In the Haarken and the new Abaddon tutorials it shows them using Thunderhawk Blue > Fenrisian Grey for the highlights. I think there might be another highlight in there, possibly Dark Reaper? I'm unsure lol

Yep, the Abaddon video has Abaddon Black > Dark Reaper > Thunderhawk Blue > Fenrisian Grey.

In Max Faleij's VoxCast interview (starts around 30:15), he talked about how the 'Eavy Metal did the new Chaos Marines/Black Legoin and added some amount of Incubi Darkness to give the black an almost greenish/teal undertone. It's unclear if he meant they actually added/mixed it into the base color, if it's blended in toward the highlights, or it is the initial color for the highlight.

That's actually a cool touch. Hints at their history as the Luna Wolves.

From what he was saying, they chose it because of color theory. It could be looked at that way and there may have been some unconscious influence for the decision by that history, but from what was said it sounded like that would have been an unintended side effect, not an intentional decision to represent their history (now that’s not to say that Aidan, who he worked with on the Black legion stuff, didn’t consciously choose that color scheme idea specifically because of the history from the Sons of Horus and just didn’t tell Max).

Not to brag, but I've got a good eye for colour accuracy and I think they added it to the base black. I was trying to put my finger on how they managed to get all of the different blacks in the paint job to have notably different tones and temperatures, and it seemed to be something more than the highlights which are also cool and warm depending on where they are. I would definitely mix up a bottle, or several, if I was going to do the same thing; I wish I knew what ratio they used. I wouldn't want to run out and need to match it after the fact, so stocking up at the beginning would be a good call. That and be sure to keep a painting journal that you can keep recipes, mixes, and techniques noted for future reference; I can't count how many times I told myself I'd remember what I did or the ratio I used, only to be cursing a few months later as I try to remember.

Definitely! Nothing is more irritating.

It would be awesome to have the 'Eavy Metal team's paint recipe notebook. Not that I could pull off most of their techniques!

perhaps as someone suggested elsewhere to hit up max faleij on instagram or twitter or facebook...?!  and ask him what ratio was used... he seems like a pretty decent guy and would probably answer if asked...

Mithril

p.s. if you do ask and he answers...feel free to post it here :laugh.:
