Unit of the Week: Chaplain in Terminator Armour

Welcome to part three of the Blood Angels Unit of the Week Series!

Following the release of the 8th edition Codex, there is no better time to discuss all the units we have access to. Each week a different unit will appear, with the idea being that we discuss how best to use that model on the battlefield. Where part one will focus on the unique BA units and part two will focus on BA units that are new to this edition of the Codex, part three will discuss how to get the best use the generic units from the past that are still with us (and that many of us have in our armies still).

Note, this isn't to lament any nerfs, etc, from previous editions; the rules are as they are so try to unlock its potential for those who wish to use them all the same. Similarly, this thread is only for using the option being discussed; it matters not if you feel something is a better choice as such comments aren't constructive to the topic and shall be removed.

Without further ado, here's this week's entry:

What are you thoughts here folks? How best would you use a TDA Chaplain?
  • To compliment a list, or to build a list around? Will the beta rules affect your list(s)?
  • Will you be running multiple units?
  • Footslog or transport? Suitable for Warlord duties?
  • What weapons and equipment are you taking and does the above affect how you run them?
  • How are you using Litanies of Hate and Spiritual Leaders effectively?
  • Are you buffing this unit? If so, how?
  • Stratagems of note?

Over to you

Nb: Please note that Chaplain, Chaplain on Bike, Chaplain Venerable Dreadnought, Pimaris Chaplain, and Primaris Chaplain on Bike will be covered on a separate entry.

I have the shmancy LE TDA chaplain with *alltheskulls* still on sprue. I just cant decide if I want him to be a carmine blade or a blood angel.

It is one of my absolute favorite models. I feel like he is best used with a bulky terminator entourage. Deepstriking in and blasting all those storm bolter shots or to help allow the re-rolls for the assault terminators coming out of a crusader or redeemer.

I actually think this guy is tricky to use correctly (and as I have one, I'd like to be able to get the most out of it).

I see two options:

  1. Castle support. Park him near your gunline(s), use HI (possible 6" if Warlord) to get some free-hits on whatever hits your lines (plus he'll buff anything that gets to hit back). He's a tad more durable than a regular Chaplain in this role. The LD buff works well here too.
  2. Proactive assault buffer. An obvious one, you want him in combat for those re-rolls. He can board anything bigger than a Land Raider and buff anything that a normal chaplain does (he's just more durable)

What I don't like is the Teleport Strike. Yes you have paid for it and yes it affords some flexibility but I wouldn't drop him with Terminators as Strike of the Archangels (re-roll all hits until you next turn for 1 CP) is better imo. I suppose you could drop him in with some Scouts or something that would benefit from a 2+/5++, 5W model that buffs LD and ATK re-rolls (i.e but what?) and whilst similar results could be achieved with a jump Chaplain, it doesn't cost 2 CP and keeps him safe for until he deploys.
