I unit strategy I was pondering.

So I like Centurions, with the price drop I think the Heavy Bolter/Hurricane Bolter load out is very much worth it. They are very slow though.

I was thinking of putting them in a Landraider Crusader since their weapons are a good match, heck for 30 pts more I can add in Sgt Chronos for that nice 2+ shooting.

Then I thought, there's room for 7 more marines in that landraider, what do I want to place in there.

A Captain, that'd be nice, and an Ancient. I'd still have room for 5 more. So why not 5 Vanguard vets, no jump packs, but armed with storm shields and CC weapons, a few axes, thunder hammers.

They would be the guard for the Centurions, protecting them from assault.

The Landraider would move up to a nice central location and they would get out, the centurions could light up just about anything nearby and with the vets strung out in front of them, the captain nearby for Heroic Intervention.

It would cost a little over 800 pts for all of this. I could also take company vets instead, a 4 man squad plus Tigurius (I'd be taking him anyway).

Does this look viable? Is 4-5 storm shield vets enough to protect the Centurions?

To go full on, I could make the Captain a Chapter master for full rerolls, Tigurius for -1 to hit the Centurions and Might of Heroes on the landraider or Captain (as needed). As well as taking the relic banner to get a better chance at shooting on death, plus that'd help the vets as well.

Or am I just placing a juicy target in easy reach for my opponent?

Thoughts?

It's not bad indeed. I know I don't want to face it!

It IS an all eggs in one basket type of thing but very hard boiled eggs lol. Consider an Apothecary to get Centurions back.

Have you got an opportunity to try it out?

Just thought it up pretty much today.

An Apothecary would be a good addition, but adding him would cut vets down to 3. Still workable, I suppose.

Bit of a background. I'm a casual player and most likely will never buy any Forgeworld models, so often try to figure out how to get the most out of strictly Codex options. My friends and I also try to avoid the hard lists to prevent escalation. Heck I don't even have RG or the new Calgar models yet.

A list I was working on was like this:

++ Battalion Detachment +5CP (Imperium - Space Marines) [28 PL, 492pts] ++

Eliminator Squad [3 PL, 72pts]

. Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Lascannon
. Space Marine w/Special Weapon: Plasma gun

Tactical Squad [9 PL, 161pts]
. 7x Space Marine
. Space Marine Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Chainsword
. Space Marine w/Heavy Weapon: Missile launcher
. Space Marine w/Special Weapon: Plasma gun

+ Elites +

Company Ancient [4 PL, 63pts]: Boltgun

Company Veterans [8 PL, 106pts]
. Space Marine Veteran: Power axe, Storm shield
. Space Marine Veteran: Storm shield, Thunder hammer
. Space Marine Veteran: Power axe, Storm shield
. Veteran Sergeant: Storm shield, Thunder hammer

Ironclad Dreadnought [8 PL, 137pts]: Dreadnought chainfist, Hurricane bolter, Ironclad Assault Launchers, Meltagun

+ Heavy Support +

Centurion Devastator Squad [19 PL, 210pts]
. Centurion: Hurricane bolter, Two Heavy Bolters
. Centurion: Hurricane bolter, Two Heavy Bolters
. Centurion Sergeant: Hurricane bolter, Two Heavy Bolters

++ Total: [125 PL, 1999pts] ++

So still a lot of boots on the ground for support, I fear it may lack anti-tank firepower though.

I do use Centurions a lot, but not with Heavy Bolters. I would with Guilliman but otherwise...it’s nit working for me.

I will say the Apothecary is very important. The more wounds infantry have, and the more expensive they are the better the Apothecary gets.

@ Prot: which Centurions do you use again, I forgot!

So far I'm enjoying the Heavy Bolter Centurions and even killed a Helverin thanks to them. I think what folk seriously underestimate is just how tough Centurions are to kill thanks to cover and a 2+ armour save.
