Toxic's 40k & Necromunda WIP (Jerra complete)

Recommended Posts

I'm on a Necromunda kick at the moment. I've posted this stuff in the Necro sub-forum but I thought I'd also share it here for a wider audience (and more feedback).

First up, some terrain.

The door consoles from Necromunda: Underhive with a few things added to make them more interesting. I'll probably add a few more bits to them before painting. Some rubber piping, discarded drinks cans, maybe some other random bits, mainly a just the odd thing on the bases of the left two to make them a bit less plain.

Some scatter terrain for Necro Zone Mortalis (and eventually Sector Mechanicus). I'm not sure I'll use the dustbins, they're more for 40k city terrain. The oil drums and fires will fit in perfectly though.

Jerra, the first ganger I'm going to work on. I wanted to start with a basic lasgun ganger and save the more exciting ones until later.

Skin more or less done. Base colours on some of the larger areas.

Lots more to come :smile.:

It makes sense for rats and trash to be near Necromunda door consoles; the candles can make sense if a malfunction prevents the console from lighting itself, forcing someone to use candles just to see the console clearly enough to operate it.

But why skulls? Did a rival gang put them there to intimidate the owners of the building those door consoles are fitted to? Will you add bloodstains to those consoles when you paint them?

Scatter terrain is always fun to work on, you can get really creative with it. Look great so far bud.

Darker skin tones are always tricky to get right I find but you've done a marvelous job so far, keep it up :smile.:

I used to find darker skin tones tricky too. I could only really paint one skin tone for darker skin, because I normally use washes and highlights to vary tone, which doesn't work well on darker skin. But I've been experimenting with some new methods and I've found the trick to dark skin is just don't use skin colours, it's too limiting. Better to start off with a dark brown of whatever shade you want, then mix in highlights using red, yellow or blue to create contrast and white to lighten the colour. Worked out ok for my first try. I'm looking forward to playing around with more skin tones on the rest of the gang.

Rats are everywhere in the Underhive, so like you say that makes sense. Trash is trash, like the real world (sadly) it's just a part of society, so again that one makes sense.

The candles could well be for power outages, which is something I hadn't considered when I added them. But it makes perfect sense. The other reason for them, and the one I used to justify them was the religious significance. A portion of Necromundan society already uses candles for religious purposes (Cawdor, Chaos Cults, probably Redemptionists), but I wouldn't be shocked if the religious significance of candles goes beyond those demographics. So maybe they're there for an offering to the door's machine spirit, maybe they're there to make an area of religious significance, maybe they're there because Cawdor like candles, maybe they're in an area that was used for a ritual or maybe they're just there because the power was out and someone wanted to see better.

I'm viewing the skulls in a similar way to the candles. They could be placed in a rival gang's territory to intimidate the owners, but I was actually thinking the reverse, that the owners are using them to mark their territory/ward away outsiders. Both reasonings work well. Alternatively, they might be there for any of the religious reasons the candles are (ritual, area of religious significance, machine spirit offering etc), as trophies in a gang's territory (that was actually my thinking by the candle on the console, which is why I drilled an entry hole in the cranium), or just put there by some random hive scum for his/her own reason.

I wasn't intending on doing any blood stains. I use fresh blood very sparingly, because it can quickly go from looking good to bad horror movie. Old, dried blood stains would be much more appropriate, but to be honest I haven't found a way of doing those that I like. It's never really noticeable and just tends to blend in with rust/dirt unless it's on something that's relatively clean, like an Astartes Apothecary's armour for example. So I don't really know on that one yet.

Ty for the feedback from you both :)

It's been a busy month and I haven't got much painting done, but I have got a chunk done on Jerra. She's so close to being finished, but I have other things this week that are taking priority so she'll have to wait until the weekend. Frustrating, as now she's so close I really want to finish her. It's mainly the base to do, but I think I'm also going to do a bit of weathering on her armour and add some dust and dirt to her shoes.

Please excuse how shiny she is. She got a coat of satin varnish so I could use her in a game on Saturday without rubbing any paint off. She'll get sprayed with dulcoat when she's done.
