Future Black Book speculation

By the way, in Malevolence, it is mentioned in a blurb that a WS brotherhood proves vital to the DA victory in Thramas, so I am hoping this is expanded on in the next book.

Normally I'd be upset about something taking away from the DA's only meaningful achievement in the Heresy, but I'll take anything over Tuchulcha, the single worst deus ex machina in the setting.

I know what you mean...but like you've said, BL essentially gives all the credit to Tchulcha, so there isn't that much thunder to steal. Now that you've mentioned it, what could a WS brotherhood meaningfully contribute on top of Tchulcha's war-ending fleet teleportation? Will be interesting to see this fleshed out by Forge World in an intelligent way.

My personal fear for Crusade is that Night Lords will get nothing at all, rules-wise.

I'm no fan of theirs, but I've noticed that even in the Warhammer Fest slideshow, there was only talk of new lore for the Night Lords. Now, in the new RtT article, we have:

"In addition to Legion-specific units and rules for the Dark Angels, Crusade also features new units for armies on both sides of the Horus Heresy"

Mention only of DA and generic legion units. I feel that that might not bode well for the VIII Legion getting new stuff.

  • 2 months later...

I had a worrying thought. Black Books are usually produced in China as far as I recall.

I wonder if they sent book 9 off to their usual printers in China sometime ago and whether it would now be on even longer hold because of the shutdown there. I guess only they can answer this question, but how to reach someone who actually has info ha.

I would hope this close (I know thats relative) to the release date, book 9 would be not held up by this. Do you think they order initial batches of 10,000 when they order these books to world wide demand? Is world wide demand that much? Has anyone ever heard any mention as to how many books any of the big hits have sold?

I wonder if Angelus would be available at Warhammer Fest (May, 2). Two more Road to Thramas articles (March, 2; April, 6) and release in May...

ForgeWorld always sell their books at big events. The only exception was Malevolence.

Based on comments (paraphrasing, "if we were showing a primarch, it'd be after a couple more articles") from the stream on Monday, I'm expecting Warhammer Fest too.

Lines up well, as Road to Thramas would fall roughly on top of the event also.

Sadly today's update makes no mention of a release date, or even says "coming soon".

I suspect even WH Fest in May will not be met.

My Working theory is that it has been slotted into a specialist game release slot, so we know it’s not Q1, as we’ve already had Titanicus, Necromunda, and will have Aeronautica before the end of Q1. Q2 is Escher, Q3 is Orlock, Q4 is Van Saar. That’s one of the three to four slots SG gets each quarter. I wouldn’t bank on Q2, that’s too optimistic given FWs black book track record and 9th edition is supposed to be released at the tail end or beginning of Q3. Q3 seems really likely, except August is normally when they roll out a new SG. Circling back to my theory, Crusade will come in August with updates AoD rules and army lists as a revamped Specialist Game, giving some breathing room from the rumored 9th Edition 40k launch but still in time to run up numbers before Q4 and investor reporting.

If I am right that means 4 more road to Thramas: Dark Angels Character article x2 , Night Lords character article, and the Lion preview in July. Alternatively, the combine Corswain/Eskaton into the same article and give us a preview of the campaign system and art in one, and hints how it can incorporate Titanicus and Aeronautica (Since all the Imperial Flyers will be out by then).

Just a heads up guys, I reached out to one of the PR people for FW specialist games on twitter, and when asked if the fans should look forward to Adepitcon for reveals his answer was basically not to expect too much as it's mainly for the other game systems. He said Road To Thramas every month was the event we should be looking forward to for Book 9 content, to paraphrase.

Thanks for asking!  This makes sense - will be sure to temper expectations.

Penddraig of 30k forum asked FW team about the book at the end of November:

Up-to-date news: Book 9 is going to the reprographics department this week and then onto the printers. This means a release is most likely in the second or third quarter after printing, shipping and world wide distribution.

I doubt the printing and shipping will take 9 months (December-August), even given the Brexit and coronavirus factors.

40k 9th ed and HH re-launch in the same year seems a bit too stacked IMO. It would make more sense to start the next Q1 financial year strong with either 9th ed or HH re-launch. I would rather HH release later, as quality control has slipped in HH. The extra wait would be a benefit.

The HH quality control and Main Studio quality control are handled by different people with no overlap. Rob is FW quality control for physical releases, and Anuj/Neil do all the editiorial in their own stuff for the rules/writing. Rob is also the guy the bring onto WHTV because he’s a rules whiz for each game (and an all around nice dude). 9th Ed and AoD 2nd Ed would really just compete for slots, as everything else is divided and not related to each other.
