Future Black Book speculation

The HH quality control and Main Studio quality control are handled by different people with no overlap. Rob is FW quality control for physical releases, and Anuj/Neil do all the editiorial in their own stuff for the rules/writing. Rob is also the guy the bring onto WHTV because he’s a rules whiz for each game (and an all around nice dude). 9th Ed and AoD 2nd Ed would really just compete for slots, as everything else is divided and not related to each other.

I thought the handover to GW main was happening for rules content with Andy H as the new HH lead though? FW is in desperate need of a total staff re-structure. I would rather see HH re-vamp pushed back to next year if the end product is well done again. HH doesn't feel like you are getting a premium/ prestige product for what you pay at this time. Its criminal charging what they do for the current overall quality of the system.

As far as I understand it, Andy H is over all specialist games. This is Aeronautica, Titanicus, Blood Bowl, Necromunda, and the Horus Heresy. Specialist Games have their own pool of sculptors And painters apart from the main GW studio. Each specialist game has a team of two writers that do all the rule and lore content for each game system. Forge World rules for existing models are given rules by the main GW studio for 40k and AoS, this being solidified in the revamped Imperial Armor series coming out soon. This covers existing kits and brings them into the main system, Psychic Awakening Style. Going forward as SG releases new models the main design studio will give them rules at their discretion, but the models are produced by the SG studio. Edited by Marshal Rohr

The Horus Heresy is not a Specialist Game. It belongs to the 'main' ForgeWorld studio.

I wish it was a specialist game, support wise.. At least it would be available in stores, translated and without the shipping fees.

Who is the main FW studio and what do they do

That's the point. The Heresy is their only area. Without Heresy existence of FW studio is meaningless.

Honestly, their support has dramatically improved lately. So my worries there are mostly gone.

If anything, they've released more this year already than all of last year it feels like tbh. They are also releasing and updating stuff, which is good.

The only issue I still have is their horrid habit of yanking out swathes of their inventory on a whim without warning (Looking at you, Tempest and Legion-Specific Upgrades...)

Not too worried about the game's future anymore though, especially since Crusade isn't looking to go 8th from what we've seen so far.

The sculptors who work in the Heresy are the same sculptors who do SG, though. Forge World is really just a brand like Warhammer is. For instance Owen Patton did the legion upgrade doors to learn how to do CAD, but he also just did the scenery for Necromunda and Titanicus. His job title isn’t Forge World sculptor it’s Speciliast Games, and he’s part of the SG design studio. Similarly Louise Sugden is the person responsible for all the crazy cool art and maps we see in Necromunda, and she does the Primarch portraits, and will also be working on the Old World.

Louise creates maps and digital dioramas for background pictures, it's Rachel Pierce who made almost all Primarch portraits.

Check this pic from 2018. https://inmaterium.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/HH_weekender18_STUDIO-723x1024.jpg Relatively old, but shows situation inside FW. Specialist Games studio is part of FW studio. Many of FW people moved to SG, other can work both for Heresy and Necromunda when needed. But there are people who never were part of SG team. Simon Egan, Neil Wylie etc. They are working for Heresy and big 40k projects (like Fires of Cyraxus) only. That's why I call them the main FW studio.

Many of those people have moved on though, and they reorganization took place last year (per Andy’s comments). Emma is a freelancer now, for example. Simon only does Primarchs, for example, but once the Khan and Lion are done he will have availability to work on other products. I don’t claim special knowledge, I just don’t think Forge World exists like it did in 2018 after the massive success of Specialist Games. Imperial Armor is either dead, or entirely in the 40K Studio’s wheelhouse for example given the recent announcement. Essentially it is looking more like FW won’t be doing anything 40k related directly anymore. Edited by Marshal Rohr

To add to the above, on the recent Voxcast with Anuj, he's mentioned as being a games developer for the Specialist Design Studio. So very much specialist games now, it seems.

Regardless, I'm really enjoying the uptick in releases and info coming out for 30k, though the complete avoidance of any mention of a Crusade release date is a bit annoying!

It’s being redone by the main 40k studio, with the first rerelease with 8th Edition Rules some time this year. Edit: probably not until after 9th drops so the rules are up to date. Edited by Marshal Rohr

Just to add to this: the portraits in the black books were exclusively done by Dominik Oedinger & Rachel Pierce up until at least Book 7. Whether it changed after that is unclear to me, but I don't think Sugden has done any portraits.

I thought she did Sanguinius? Totally might be wrong though. The guy with the awesome DA army on IG got whoever does them to do one of him and I thought it was Louise

Nope, Rachel Pierce did all of the portraits in book 8. I'd thought Dominik Oedinger would have done some but apparently not from what I'm seeing
