As a named character, would he have all of his wargear and traits predetermined?

I imagine so.

I'm liking that he has a Heavy Bolter (or equivalent) on his shoulder.

I suspect that's an assault bolter without the shield, or a unique weapon based on an assault bolter.

Very possible since it would help him to move forward and use that big old axe.

I'm so out of the loop with 8th. What does gravis armour provide normally?

3+ save, +1 toughness. Is that correct?

Tech marines often had "artificer armour" in the past. If this guy has artificer gravis armour for a 2+ save and toughness 5 he will be fairly solid even if he lacks any invulnerable save, which most special characters get something...

Well, I didn't see either of those coming.

Also looks like more Mechanicus in some form. Judging by the trailer it may be a new transport, 30k-to-40k rules or just a fluff piece to introduce the Iron Hands, we'll see.

What looks to be a proper Chaos Knights codex is the bigger surprise though, although in hindsight, it was perhaps inevitable since they couldn't stay as an Index forever.

Tech themed campaign on the horizon maybe?

https://www.youtube....h?v=2RYfrtXJwmo

I just hope he gets a proper 2+ save instead of that censored.gif 3+ they're handing out to HQ's these days that make the oldmarines objectively superior in performance. Not to mention that if this guy gets a 2+/4++ with T5 he'll be an absolute beast if some warlord traits and wargear is thrown on him.

Named Character

He'll have a set Wargear and Warlord Traits

Im guessing 3+ with T5 and 6+ FNP. I can see this named character just being a named primaris techmarine. Kinda like the named primaris lieutenants.
"There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable."

"There is another theory which states that this has already happened."

There are no named Primaris Lieutenants. A generic HQ having a name in the background fluff of a boxset and such is not the same as a named character. Named characters have unique rules with fix wargear and warlord traits and you can only take one of them in your army list.

GW told us it's a named character for Iron Hands, not that it's a primaris techmarine Iron Hands can use.

It's not just a techmarine with a custom rank name - Iron Father is, similar to sanguinary priests, a specialization that other chapters don't even have. In this case combining techmarine with (depending on sources) captain or chaplain. It would be less of a stretch to say "Victrix guard is just a fancy word for honour guard" and ask for non-UM primaris honour guard. So yes, that's the first time in quite a few editions that IH have something unique, that other chapters don't have. You'll get your generic techmarines soon enough...

...and that guy probably decided which army I'm gonna build from Dark Imperium. I'm really digging the model, but I can already see two or three aspects of the model that I'm gonna change.

I would assume that he has a 2+ save. Not only is he a techmarine, but the only other named Primaris character (Calgar) also has a 2+, showing that specialised suits of Gravis armour can provide this level of protection.

I love that IH have a character at last, but I don't like how the bolter is attached to an air exhaust/stabiliser. Should have gone down the other route and moved the stabilisers to the centre and had the MIU bolter to the normal vent place.

I always wanted options for the Techmarine -

- A gun harness which was a long range upgrade.

- The Servo Harness which helps with repairs and is what we have now.

- A close combat Harness. A few blades and a plasma torch.

This guy could be the start of that. I'm excited though I am kinda jaded with the lack of options and monopose nature of GW kits nowadays so I'm not confident my wishes will come true.

Man I miss Kit bashing.

30K Forge Lords can take a conversion beamer in exchange for the servo-arm, maybe GW will get inspired by this for the generic techmarine/master of the forge release.

Techmarines used to have the option to take conversion beamers as well before 8th so no need to get inspired by 30k. ^^

Man I miss Kit bashing.

Surely kit bashing is now much easier with the mono-pose plastic techmarine, compared to the previous mono pose metal techmarines?

Do you maybe mean you miss having options instead of fixed loadouts for new models in the primaris range?

Kit bashing is where you take parts of another model and add them to an existing kit, not convert a monopose model into something else.

So does adding a thunder hammer from the deathwatch set to this guy count as adding parts of another model to an existing kit, or converting a mono-pose model to something else? To me, those are the same, so we're going to have to disagree on semantics there happy.png

I will agree that the choice of wargear options for Primaris characters is woefully inadequate, however non-primaris still have many options.

I’m pretty sure they still do even in 8th (from the index), though I don’t have the book at hand right now.

I've not mentioned choices of Primaris. They aren't very good but as someone looking to get into certain other armies that GW produces (Blades of Khorne yum) it's a trend that GW has fallen into lately.

As for the nature of kit bashing, I don't think hacking apart a model and sticking another piece of model on to it really will convince most people that it's a simple kit bash vs conversion...

Yeah...semantics. Take bitz from one model to convert the other. Old characters were monopose too, the metal/finecast techmarine/MotF was harder to convert than this guy is. A friend's DG marines are a lot more problematic, as every part is growing into its neighbour.

But yes, I miss the days where one had options in the unit entry. The Iron Father is a pretty well-rounded model (ranged/CC) and a named character after all, so it's understandable he will probably have a fixed loadout. But having more options for the other primaris HQs would be great - building different models for the same loadout again and again feels pointless...

My buddy who got me into the hobby is an IH player and I've heard on more than one occasion how he wished he had a named character... but he doesn't like Primaris... so this weekends conversations with him have been funny (to me). On one hand he's super stoked but on the other he's waffling because Primaris. I'm happy for him and I think this model looks awesome.

It also sounds like a generic primaris tech marine is coming, I'd love to see a new thunderfire cannon or it's equivalent be released alongside it because those are two models that I would love to have in my army.

I think kit bashing these days is less about adding wargear options from the rules side and almost entirely about modeling (poses, silhouette, etc.)

I can see this guy being a fantastic option for kit bashes, especially if a generic Primaris techmarine is on its way.

My bad sfPanzer, I did not remember that. To be fair I'm not even sure I got the SM codex for 7th edition, so I completely forgot which option were available for techmarines or Masters of the Forge :D.
