In Midnight Clad - The Prophet of the Eighth Legion

So, with the ETL rising once more and the Tenebris Campaign continuing once more in July down at Warhammer World, I figured now would be a good time to use some motivation and get started on these guys. Hopefully this year I can start attempting to make amends for the previous failures over the last few years but we'll see how far I can get. To give a bit of backstory, my last army was my Iron Warriors with a hint of Dark Mechanicus mixed in which I managed to get to 1750 points roughly around this time last year. With the new releases for Chaos over the last few months I've decided they don't go well with my sons of Perturabo since they seem to fit more with the HH nowadays.

 

Onto the Night Lords, first off I have my test model here:

 

 

There's a few things I need to tweek with him but I'm otherwise happy with him. I'm undecided for what to do with a base for them so any suggestions would be great. I do apologise about the quality of the new few photos as the lighting isn't the best. I'll get around to reshooting them once it's daytime again.

 

 

Shown above there is a five man khorne beserker squad with chain axes and pistols with the champion using a power fist. I managed to grab a few of the chainglaives from forge world however to properly chaosify them I replaced the blades with some chainswords in the new CSM box. There's also a few CSM backpakcs from the old box I've thrown in as well to give that more scavenged look for my guys.

 

 

Next we've got a ten man CSM squad with members from Shadowspear with the few kit bashes thrown in here and there. I've also started messing with some modeling chain to use as straps amongst other plans.

 

 

Finally the Master of Executions. While I wasn't a big fan of the head, I just knew I needed to turn him into a Night Lord. Only difference from the main model is the use of a HH crew member head which is sadly no longer available. It really gives a grim knight feel to him.  He'll be leading my 500 point list for the first few battles in July for the Tenebris system.

 

That's all for now. I do have two havoc squads I need to pick up from my local GW and I do wanna pick up another squad of CSm to bulk my numbers out. If people have any suggestions for some units to include I'm all ears. Until next time.

So, a smaller update from the last. After getting home from college, I was scouring the web for inspiration when I came across a conversion based off of Khârn the Bloody for a particular character introduced at the end of Void Stalker. I have to admit I've recently gotten back into reading the Night Lords Trilogy by ADB, which is a classic I'll never forget, and dusting off a Khârn I'd bought in my last visit to Warhammer World, came up with this. May I present Decimus, Prophet of the Eighth Legion:

 

 

 

 

 

He's mostly just about ready to get a lick of paint however I'm considering whether or not to include some hanging trophies. They're mentioned in Void Stalker however I don't want to clutter him up. I have managed to include things such as the combi bolter, the relic blade, the flesh cloak and so forth. The runes I'll put on with transfers from both the new CSM box as well as the Blackshield transfer and maybe even the SoH one as well once I get a proper look at it.

Great work on your Night Lords! Very anxious to see some more work done to Decimus. That is a great conversion you’ve put together.

Greetings brother, looking really nice! Cool idea on making Decimus. I really hope one day they actually make a ruleset for him or bring him back in the lore, I'm sure he will appear one day again in the lore. For now we know he's gathering the Night Lords and taking the fight to Ulthwé!

 

I would suggest getting some Raptors, one unit of them with an icon of despair can throw out -3 leadership when they get close to enemy models. I usually always take 2 squads + Raptor Lord with the Claws of the Black Hunt relic, it's amazing and super fluffy. The Chaos Lord with jump pack doesn't have to be the warlord if that doesn't fit your fluff, you can have a different more suitable HQ be your warlord and then the Chaos Lord with jump pack can represent the commander of your Raptor contingent. Anyway looking forward to seeing what you do!

I think one of ADB's upcoming projects is a Night Lords series, so we might see Decimus.

Nice use of 30k Khârn for Decimus. Though, I'm worried you'll find the same issue I did with that particular model, as he's really small compared to the newer 40k Marines. Like, a lot smaller. Then again, it could also work because Decimus is apparently supposed to be pretty young at the end of Void Stalker?

 

I'm excited to see where this merry band of murderers goes.

@hushtong Cheers mate, I'm eager to have him ready for the ETL this year. I'm busy working today but hopefully I'll get some more touches on him soon :)

 

@ Midnight Thanks brother, I'm glad I'm doing the Legion proud. I'm in the same boat with Decimus, there's a lot of potential with where they left him and I really wants see him fight with the Night Lords United in Midnight Clad. As for the unit suggestion I'll definitely think it over. Decimus will likely be my warlord and I have a couple of things to work on such as havoc etc but we'll see how things go :)

 

@ Lanparth God that would be great. The trilogy was great any any continuation I will snap at whenever I get the chance.

 

@ Gederas Funny, last night I compared him to a normal CSM and he looked fine to me. Maybe it's the stance but having him lined up with everyone, he was still noticable to me. In any case I'll definitely keep him around.

I think it might be due to me using that model for my World Eaters totally unmodified, and the rest of my World Eaters are kitbashes of Mark III legs and Blood Warriors, or AoS models with added 40k bits, which are much, much taller, kind of exacerbates the issue.

 

I haven't really checked the 30k Khârn compared to the new Chaos Marines, as my kitbash using it is in a display cabinet at my FLGS :lol:

So, life has been a bit chaotic recently. In short I've had to reorganize a few things. Nothing that couldn't be fixed, I just have to refer to a certain Captain when it comes to plans...

 

Anyway, onto the main event. Decimus has received some new additions today, mainly in the form of trophies and (even though I said I wouldn't) some ceremonial wings.

 

 

I wasn't going to begin with but realised I had a spare pair of Dark Angel wings from the veteran box that would do nicely with a little bit of greenstuff. Looking at them now I might do a bit more adjustments to it but overall I'm happy with it.

 

 

I managed to get two sets of trophies on the back, the first was a longer one with mostly skulls and I ended up gluing it into the udner of the flesh cape which I feel worked out in the end. The second is a Imperial helmet which I drilled out slightly and glued onto his belt roughly.

 

 

Lastly I also got one onto his shoulder guard which was a bit finicky and I'm questioning whether or not to keep it there. C&C on it would be great.

 

 

Also as Gederas asked for it, here's a comparison between Decimus and a new CSM. Honestly size wise it's not really noticeable to me at least but the landscape and posture may have a part to play here.
