Returning to Heresy with the Angel and Day of Revalation

Hello all!

Having picked up Sanguinius and some Paladins at the Weekender, I am keen to return to the days of Heresy!

I’ve not played a game in years, but thought I’d put a list together before I start building:

++ Crusade (Legiones Astartes: Age of Darkness Army List) [2,500pts] ++

+ HQ +

Damocles Command Rhino [100pts]

Praetor, Legion [155pts]: Blade of Perdition, Combi-Bolter, On Foot

. Cataphractii Pattern Terminator Armour: Terminator Armour

Primus Medicae [130pts]: Combi-Bolter, On Foot

. Cataphractii Pattern Terminator Armour: Terminator Armour

. Consul

. . Primus Medicae

. Power Weapon: Power Axe

+ Elites +

Apothecarion Detachment [70pts]

. Apothecary, Legion: Jump Pack, Power Armour, Power Sword

Crimson Paladins [210pts]: 2x Crimson Paladins, Iliastus Pattern Assault Cannon, 2x Power Fist

. Crimson Exemplar: Power Weapons

+ Troops +

Assault Squad, Legion , Compulsory [305pts]: 14x Assault Space Marines, Legion

. Additional Wargear: Inferno Pistol (Blood Angels), Power Axe, Power Sword

. Assault Sergeant, Legion: Inferno Pistol (Blood Angels), Melta Bombs

. . Power Weapon: Power Sword

. Standard Wargear

. . Chainsword or Combat Blade: Combat Blade

Assault Squad, Legion , Compulsory [305pts]: 14x Assault Space Marines, Legion

. Additional Wargear: Inferno Pistol (Blood Angels), Power Axe, Power Sword

. Assault Sergeant, Legion: Inferno Pistol (Blood Angels), Melta Bombs

. . Power Weapon: Power Sword

. Standard Wargear

. . Chainsword or Combat Blade: Combat Blade

Dawnbreaker Cohort [335pts]: 7x Dawnbreaker Legionary, Equinox Power blade Case, 6x Fallen-star Pattern Power Spear, Melta Bombs

. Dawnbreaker Champion: Blade of Perdition

. Standard Wargear: Artificer Armour

+ Heavy Support +

Leviathan Siege Dreadnought Talon [405pts]: Dreadnought Drop Pod, Legion

. Leviathan Siege Dreadnought: Cyclonic Melta Lance, Heavy Flamer, Iliastus Pattern Assault Cannon

. . Leviathan Siege Claw

+ Lords of War +

Sanguinius [485pts]: The Spear of Telesto and Moonsilver Blade

++ Total: [2,500pts] ++

The ideas are pretty straight forward:

Sanguinius deploys with the Dawnbreakers and Apothecary

Praetorian, Paladins and Primus-Medicae teleport together

Assault Squads and Leviathan strike at targets of opportunity.

I’ve heard the Damocles is just too good to ignore, but it doesn’t feel entirely thematic with this list. I’m tempted to drop it for more Assault Marines.

I would have also liked to have given the Assault Squads Apothecaries, but just can’t afford it at this points level.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this list?

Hey there. I would change up a few things.

-If you want to run the DoR rite of war, your Praetor needs a jump pack, so he cant be a Cataphractii Terminator.

-I really would contemplate about giving the Primus Medicae and Paladin a Dreadclaw. Its 115 points so you may not be able to afford it, but it lets them assault out of them. Otherwise they'll just be there for a turn taking fire. I would also give the Sgt a Granade Harness and a Blade of Perdition. To be absolutely frank, unless you really love them (and I do), I would just scrap the whole unit (including the primus medicae) and take another assault squad instead.

-I would forget about the Inferno Pistols on the Assault Squad because they're never worth it unless they're on a Moritat, and Instead of taking power swords, I would just talke all power axes for that AP2. Also, Artificer Armour on sergeants is a must.

-Keep the Damocles. Its the best 100 points you can spend if you're running a DoR list.

-Finally for the Leviathan, since hes armed with a melta lance, give him a drill if you want to have him take on armour. The claw is great if you're going up against a primarch or a Thanatar, but otherwise its very specialized. And keeping with this theme, it take another assault cannon instead of the heavy flamer if you have the points. Finally you really should give it armoured ceramite unless you want a random melta shot to toast it, and given the fact you're using a pod, its going to be up close to the enemy so that's a thing that's very likely to happen. On expensive units like that, ALWAYS take armoured ceramite. Also if you have points left over, phopex on the Levi is absolutely fantastic. It eats elite units for breakfast.

Hey there. I would change up a few things.

Thank you for the detailed reply m0nolith, I really appreciate it. It must have taken you some time!

I'd missed the issue of needing a Jump Pack Praetor. That does imply, unfortunately, that the Paladins and Medicae might have to go from this list. I really like those models! ;) It does free up a lot of points though.

I'll make those adjustments you suggest and have a think about the other assault unit that could take the place of the Paladins. A second Leviathan seems a little to 'power-game' than I'd like with this list. Perhaps the Contemptor with jump pack.

Regarding the Damocles, I agree rules wise that it should remain. Thematically, I have a bit of a problem with a loud APC trundling along and then the heavens open. I'm wondering about a counts-as conversion to a heavy skimmer or drop pod that serves the same purpose as a Damocles. Perhaps with a unit of recon marines or scouts to sit in it for scoring purposes.

So I’ve been thinking hard about this list and made several others, including different Rites of War. However, I keep coming back to trying to achieve a list that is centered around the First Sphere units - Dawnbreakers/Sang Guard and Crimson Paladins in particular. As such, I’ve settled on the following list.

I’m a little uncomfortable with the Damocles in there, despite how good it is. The idea of a single Rhino rolling up rather diminishes the ‘shock-and-awe’ orbital drop. However, I’m thinking of doing the Rhino up as a real recon tank, in camouflage colours and lots of high gain aerials etc. I considered a grab rhino conversion but can’t find anything suitable.

Anyway, the list!

++ Crusade (Legiones Astartes: Age of Darkness Army List) [2,995pts] ++

This was an altogether different take on the list, using the Angels Wrath RoW. The main issue with this list is probably the lack of anti-armour:

Apparently you're aiming to put the Tacs and the Plasma Supports in the Eagles ?

Well, that won't be possible.

The Storm Eagle has a transport capacity of 20 models, but it isn't a super-heavy, so it can still only transport one unit (plus attached ICs).

I like the first list, but my biggest issue is that you only have two units that can capture objectives (the Paladins can’t capture), and that’s a serious issue at 2k, not to mention 3k.

Couple of notes on all of the lists.

-Always, ALWAYS take artificer armour on the sergeants and apothecaries they can take it (and apothecaries can’t if they have a jump pack)

-Don’t bitter with the lightning claws on the Terminators, they are very overpriced. Give them power axes, fists or chainfists. Also for that matter, I’m not a big fan of the assault cannons on the termites, especially the Paladins since they’ll be in cc as soon as they drop.

-Your third list’s Levi doesn’t have armoured ceramics. This is a must take.

-Orbital assault armies are a blast, the first two or three times, then they get a little boring. Full disclosure Iv never played one, but this is what I heard from many Heresy players.

-Your Tactical And Support squads can’t share a Storm Eagle. One unit per transport unless it’s a LoW.

-Chaplins can’t take Rites of war.

-If Your character can take it, always take the Blade of Perdition, aka, The Blade of Salty Tears.

m0nolith and Unknown Leginnaire, thank you both for the feedback. Looks like I got a fair bit wrong, especially the Angels Wrath list! That'll teach me for playing with Battlescribe while drinking whiskey!

I'll scrap the Angels Wrath list altogether.

I'll tweak the Orbital Assault list to include more Artificer Armour, where possible.

For the Day of Revelation list, two Leviathans is clearly excessive, and I have the problem of too few units for capturing objectives. Therefore, how about swapping the Leviathan for two 10-man Tactical squads in Drop Pods?

Cant take drop pods in a DoR list, only in Orbital Assault lists.

Welcome to Heresy ;)

Also, 2 Leviathans really isn't excessive. Leviathans are really dependent on that 4++, they can absolutely own a game or they can die turn 1 from a lucky lascannanon shot. I'v experienced both of those things.

Damn it! Getting the abilities of the different lists mixed up!

Hmmm. Therefore the only thing I can think to do with the RoW list is to split the 2x10 Dawnbreakers into 4x5 squads. Sanguinius and the Praetor with one each, Apothecaries with one each.

I considered dropping the Paladins, but I’d really like them in the list and the Dreadclaw is needed as the required Fast Attack choice.

An alternative I suppose could be drop the Paladins and Dreadclaw, swap in a Storm Eagle and Tactical Squad? Not really my preference as I’d like to go for a First Sphere only theme. Tricky!

Splitting the Dawnbreakers is a huge risk, even with their 2+ and FnP they'll be shot to cinders rather quickly, when only 5 strong.

Given the choice, I'd go with DoR over OA or AW any day.

Hmm, not being 100% sure on your final visualization of what you'd like your list to contain, but fielding two Leviathans plus Sanguinius in 3k pts. shouldn't really impose much of a problem.

But ... and that's a big but ... they'll be eating up half of your points allowance, thus crippling your number of scoring units quite considerably.

For Example:  Blood Angels, DoR:

Legion Chaplain w. Artificer Armour, Jump Pack, Crozius, Refractor and Melta Bombs

Damocles Command Rhino

Dawnbreaker Cohort x 9, Blade of Perdition, Melta Bombs, 3x Equinox.

Dawnbreaker Cohort x 9, Blade of Perdition, Melta Bombs, 3x Equinox.

2 x Legion Apothecary w. Jump Pack

Crimson Paladins x 5, Blade of Perdition, Power Axes, Grenade Harness, 1x Assault Cannon

Dreadclaw Drop Pod

Leviathan w. Drill & Melta Gun, Snippy Claw & Melta Gun, Phosphex, Ceramite

Dreadnought Drop Pod

Leviathan w. 2x Cyclonic Melta Lance, Ceramite

Dreadnought Drop Pod

Vet Tacs x5, Artificer, Power Fist, Assault Cannon, 3 Combi Weapons

Sanguinius

There, that'll be 3k on the nose. But only three scoring units in 3k points - which would make me feel rather uneasy. That's a matter of personal taste though.

I'd prolly swap those Paladins (a unit that kinda feels highly ambivalent about their own battlefield role anyways) for either Legion Terminators (more anti-armour) or a unit of Seekers (blasting things with Prefered Enemy), giving you another scoring unit.
