New Obliterators - Conversions

Recommended Posts

From the waist upwards, I'm liking the new Obliterator models. Definitely a step above the old sculpts! Maybe they could have sculpted the weapons to look more like growths from the body, but nothing that some greenstuff can't fix. Travel the other direction and, well...

I'm sure that some of you are also not big fans over the chaos speedo look. Before I pick some up for my Word Bearers, I'm looking to fix the look with some legs that are proportionate to the new size. I was thinking maybe the new Abaddon legs might work? Maybe the Daemon Prince, with some armor plating?

What do you ladies and gents think?

You might want to take this topic to the Chaos Space Marines forums - you are more likely to get the desired response there.  Many users stick to the forums of the armies they collect, so you have a better chance of there catching the attention of, and receiving advice from, someone else who has considered converting their obliterators.

I got 4 currently and modeled them with a green stuff tabard to get rid of that speedo look. also i switched some weapons with leftovers from the hellbrute kit To make them look more diverse. i also did two headswaps with hellbrute heads which need to be cut down a bit. The hellbrute bits scale very nicely in general though. Edited by Maschinenpriester

I don't think they fit as Obliterators. The models look nice, but they don't look like Obliterators. They're not fleshmetal.

I'd suggest using the rollers from green stuff world to make a bunch of cabling as well, and maybe some extra armour plating.

I’m stuck with my obliterators too. My problem is that with official paint scheme makes it look like an ogryn that tried to put on its clothes/armor without assist, and forgot about pants and stuff.

I can live with the sculpt, I think it’s the flesh tone that kinda ruins them for me, but I haven’t decided how to paint them instead... perhaps metallic grey? Or tone them somehow so some flesh parts are the same color as the armor plates (black in my case) and then they gradually turn into... well. Flesh? Metal? Purple goo?

Something. Just want them to look like fleshmetal and armor are joined together and not separate parts. I mean, the old obliterators looked like the fleshmetal grew from the armor, the new ones look like they wear armor on top of bare flesh. Perhaps a non-skin colored fleshmetal lessens the issue..?

It all depends. I painted the first Oblit for my Night Lords with a pale, slightly Slaaneshi tone and the result looks really good:

That actually lifts the whole model for me, thanks for sharing! It also confirms that my issue wasn’t the speedos, it was the human-tone on the fleshmetal.

I have a couple of the old obliterators models that I painted in Slaanesh colors, with fleshmetal kinda like yours but darker - but I was unsure of how it’d look when the armor panels weren’t black & purple.

Since I intend to devote the new ones to Slaanesh (endless cacophony!) I might just steal your idea....

No problem. Feel free to steal away.

The skin was done as such:

Black Primer (obviously) > Celestra Grey > Ulthuan Grey > Druichii Violet thinned with Lahmian Medium > Ulthuan Grey > White Scar

Thanks for the help, @Grotsmasha!

Also, I'm liking the ideas coming out thus far!

@sebs_evo7: yeah, I was thinking cataphron tracts initially, maybe figure out a way to Chaosify it or something?

@Gederas: Hey, that oblit looks good! Any chance you have a picture of the rear, too? It might alleviate my "speedo" fears some.

@Ceranidian: Good job on the skin! I always find it helps to outline parts of the abused skin with a small line of pink, then highlight with pinkish-white for the raised parts.

@Subtle Discord: *smacks forehead* why didn't I think of this before?! Yeah, Ambots might just be the right proportions to look for! I'll have to take a look at some, then.

You want an obliterator booty? Here's an obliterator booty

I'm going to use the Ambot kit to build myself a more mechanical take on Obliterators, personally.

I can't wait to see your take on this SD I've bought some of your kits in the past and the quality and fit was excellent. I'd love to see the Rhino trim kits return as your version is way better than the GW 'stick spikes on it and were done'. I just don't see CMS that have twisted armour trim and warp distorted weapons being happy with a few spikes and trophy racks.

'Hey look what I did to our transport Lord Abaddon, I stuck some spikes on It!'

I'm trying to keep the Trim Kits in stock but they're proving to be too popular. I'll make 15-20 and people buy them 3+ at a time so they sell out fast. Right now I need to expand the line and keep doing all sorts of background stuff for the studio and life in general so I'm limited in how much I can cast. Doesn't matter how well a few kits sell if I don't expand the range and appeal to a wider range of potential customers, so as much as I want to keep the stock up I simply can't cast all the time. Yes, I really need to expand to properly resolve this issue but I need enough election to support the many factors that will come with expanding before I can undertake it. I'm just in that catch-22 point of a startup where I need more of everything but can't afford it, yet. Slow-and-steady and all that jazz, progress is happening, it's just going to take the time it takes, if I want to do it right and avoid borrowing vast sums to prop it up too soon.

@Gederas: Uhh... it's too late to change my mind now, right? :laugh.:

@Aarik: I was thinking something similar, maybe even shaving the legs first to resemble smoothed-out armor and then use greenstuff for the fleshy bits. I look forward to seeing what you produce!

@SubtleDiscord: I second what PJ1933 says, your armor trims really make CSM vehicles better represent the aesthetic than simply put spikes on the top. Good luck on the startup process!

Do we actually have more pictures from users who converted the Shadowspear Obliterators? I want my second set to look different than the first and am still looking for inspiration (same for my second Venomcrawler).

I'm getting close to finishing my first obliterator conversion and since I pretty much share DamnedProphet's opinion, he's gonna resemble a huge mutated terminator more than a mini helbrute like those straight out of the box. But I left the centurion-like feet after clipping away the pistons on the back. They've been growing on me. I'll post some pics in here when I'm done and I'd love to see more of other people's conversions.
