Penitent Engine Question

Penitent Engines have the rule "Desperate for Redemption."  It says:

This unit can fight twice in each Fight phase, instead of only once.

I had been immediately resolving the second fight after the first but I had a friend tell me that I was playing that rule wrong.  He said that after the engine fights for the fist time, we need to switch to another unit.  In this example it was moving on to another of my units that had charged that same phase.  This felt odd to me as I thought you needed to fully resolve the penitent engine.  Can others let me know how they are playing this rule?  He said the rule was akin to something that a Khorne model had but I can't remember what.

Your friend is right that the PE do get activate 2 different times in the same CC phase, however you still get to chose the order in which you activate your units.

On the turn the PE charge, they get to fight once. Then your opponent may spend CP to interrupt, after that you may fight again with the PE.  If your opponent doesn't interrupt you can fight twice with your PE before your opponent gets to swing.  This is because charging units get to go first, unless interrupted or some other rule comes into play... getting 2 activations doesn't negate the fact that the unit charged.

On a turn where your PE start the round in CC, assuming no charges.  Treat the 2 activation with your PE the same if you were activating 2 different squads... so it would be you go, they go, and you go again.

The second activation coming later also does not negate the fact that the unit has already gone first.

You only have to pick a different unit to fight with when there are other units that have charged and have yet to be activated.  In other words, on the turn they charged, resolve the first activation along with any other charging units.  The second activation happens with any other ongoing combat.

Not necessarily. Wording is vague. It says 'all charging units fight first' with a period. Then later it says 'once all charging units have fought fight woth non chargers.

So technically just reading the penitent engine and BRB rules, both are fair interpretations.

I would find any relevant rulings for khorne berzerkers and go from there.

Basically, you can fight twice back to back with PEngines if they charged, if not then you have to give your opponent a chance before you go again if they have any units that are eligable to fight.

From the main rule book FAQ pg 12

Q: If a unit has an ability that allows it to fight twice in the Fight phase (e.g. Berzerkers), at what point during the Fight phase do they fight for the second time?

A: Treat each time the unit is able to fight as a separate unit selected to fight for all purposes. So, if such a unit charged this turn, it will fight both times before any units that did not charge. If the unit did not charge this turn, then, after all units that did charge have fought, you can select this unit to fight with, then your opponent can select a unit to fight with, then you can select your unit to fight with for the second time (you need not consecutively use both of the unit’s opportunities to fight – unless of course there are no other eligible units to select to fight with).
