Nice write-up, some juicy bits in there. Great to see the Dark Angels being up for such a good start, but of course I hope that CSM can turn it up a notch even more!

Comparing this to previous years, this ETL has a surprisingly slow start:

ETL IV

Total participants: 290

Total vows: 295

Total points pledged: 232,561

ETL V

Total participants: 309

Total vows: 313

Total points pledged: 255,539

ETL VI

Total participants: 251

Total vows: 253

Total points pledged: 207,026

ETLVII

Total participants: 216

Total vows: 220

Total points pledged: 149,429

I am 100% certain this has to do with the Contrast paints release holding people back, but damn, the drop is massive. Here is hope for a recovery soon though, with the paints being out next week!

P.S.: You forgot to include the Chaos Spawn Beauty Pageant in the list of satellite events! The best beauty pageant around! :teehee:

Perhaps after 7 years we've managed a decent dent in our collective piles of shame.....

I like your optimism Grot, but I highly doubt that’s the case :D

Starting laying down the base coat on my vow, and realised I still have work to do on my last project.

I knocked about half my models off a table at a tournament weekend before last, and I haven't gotten around to gluing the pieces back together yet. Once I started repair work, I noticed that I have to refine the bases before I'm really happy with them.

This is my first 1000 points that I've painted, and I want it to look right before I move on. So vow 1 is being delayed slightly.

Damn, sorry to hear about that "batle damage". :sad.:

Don't wait too long though. You have 20 more days, but your first vow has to be made before 1st of July! My bad, ignore this.

Almost two weeks in and I am still undecided on who I will vow for. Also doesn't help that it hasn't stopped raining since the start of the ETL either, which is problematic for spraying!

DeathWatch. Everyone looks good in black. And you can paint whatever chapter shoulder pads your heart desires.

What options have you considered so far?

My vote would go to Chaos Daemons: you would boost their numbers by 50%, the range of models is aweseome and diverse, with the variety of possible colour schemes making it virtually impossible to get bored with them. Go Daemons!

My initial thoughts were either; Farsight Enclave Tau, Iyanden Eldar, or custom Dark Eldar scheme.

Last time (ETL V) I went for Ultramarines, so this time I thought I'd try my hand at a non-human faction.

Do you have CA2018? It has background and rules for The Eight, which would be a cool project for FE Tau. Split them over a few vows, and do a supporting "normal" Tau army to support them, and you end up with an amazing army.

+++ETL VII - WEEK 2 UPDATE+++

OK, so we’ve reached ETL VII Week 2. Let’s see where we stand.

SPACE MARINES:

The Space Marines still retain the most participants and the most points pledged among the Astartes but i) the DAs are close behind (and with greater productivity at this point) and ii) the CSMs are way ahead in participation and somewhat ahead in points pledged. The fact that their average vow is a bit higher than the ETL average is definitely a plus, but it won’t get them far unless more participants join in! Remember, it’s still recruiting period, so make the best of it!

BLOOD ANGELS:

It seems that the BAs had some successful recruitment in this second week – that’s good news. BUT, with 28 participants they lag vs. the SMs and the DAs not to mention the CMS. The BAs have proven they can perform magic, but it’ll be way better to not need it. And if the “magic” is to work at all, i.e. make up the lack of participants with an avalanche of re-vowing, well, you need to start this ASAP. That means completions. And so far you have none. Food for thought…

DARK ANGELS:

A great follow-up to a good start, the DAs are the only Astartes Forum with completions! Furthermore, with 31 participants, they are very close to the SMs, and, through re-vowing they actually have more vows outstanding! However, they are plagued at this point with a low average vow, the lowest among the Astartes, (which might justify their early completions) and if they compare themselves with the CSMs, well, they have a long way to go still… The trick is to get more people on board – it’s still recruiting period after all.

SPACE WOLVES:

Here we’ve seen some recruiting, but this pace must continue! On the plus side, they have a fairly large average vow, but in the end of the day, they have ca. 12k points pledged – that’s the smallest amount among the Astartes and dangerously close to both the AoD Forums. So, let’s see more Wolves joining and hopefully, by the end of Week 3 we’ll see a different picture.

ADEPTA SORORITAS:

This heroic Forum has managed to increase their number of participants and they put up a brave face in terms of points pledged that stand at par with Imperial Agents and more than the GKs and the Deathwatch! Hopefully we’ll see an acceleration of this trend, but I really have to admire the commitment of this die-hard forum! Remember, if you still have the metal minis, now is the time to paint them – once the new stuff hits the shelves, they’ll be forgotten for ever!

ADEPTUS MECHANICUS:

The AdMech so some acceleration in the second week and now they are firmly in the second position within the IFOR behind the Guard. But the Guard’s lead is not the big, it can be easily overcome – wouldn’t it be great for the disciples of Mars to wrestle the leading position from the Guard this once? It’s not as difficult as it seems, a few strong vows could tip the balance. It’s not like you don’t have a fantastic range to draw upon…

ASTRA MILITARUM:

Well, the Gurd’s leadership is maintained. You have the most participants and the most points, so within the IFOR ecosystem you seem pretty strong. Outsie the IFOR though, your biggest rival at this point seems to me to be the Tau. WILL YOU LEAVE THOSE FILTHY XENOS DRAWC BREATH? I also believe that as few more participants with strong vows can lead you to threaten the SWs – but you really need to have some point-rich vows for that. Super-heavies anyone?

AGENTS OF THE IMPERIUM:

The numbers of the Agents increased somewhat, but I think there is more to come. I get that the core of the Agents units (excl. Custodes) are generally low point entries, but what about the Custodes? Let’s see more of them guys: amazing range, competitive lists and not the most challenging to paint either. Let’s see the Emperor’s praetorians arrive! Funnily enough the Agent’s have the highest score in the ETL at this point and the highest average vow!

GREY KNIGHTS:

Well, we not only had another participant this week but also completions! That puts the Grey Knights firmly ahead of the Daemons at this stage. But in order to cement that advantage, you need to get more onboard. I know the GKs are a challenging Codex to play with competitively, but the range is fantastic! Hopefully we’ll see more GKs joining in the second half of the recruitment period.

DEATHWATCH:

Here things to be running out of steam. Only one new participant joined in this week, but at least there was a completion. Deathwatch needs to speed up their game if they want to improve their standing within the IFOR, or, more importantly, against the various Xenos Forums. Right now, they have fewer points pledged vs. all the Xenos with the sole exception of the Orks! The problem here is the very low average vow, the lowest in the ETL at only 223pts. I have high expectations for the Xenos’ hunters in the second part of the recruitment effort.

CHAOS SPACE MARINES:

Well, CSMs are at the best position among ALL ETL Forums. The most participants and the most points pledged, while the average vow is at par with the ETL average. HOWEVER, the 33k points pledged are not that far ahead from the loyalist SM and they are ahead by only 7 participants. This is an easy gap to fill for your arch rivals. The fact that there are no completions at this stage (which means no re-vowing) is also a minus. So yes, you are ahead, but without a safety margin… More recruits solve all the problems!

CHAOS DAEMONS & THE LOST AND THE DAMNED:

There is progress in the Daemons’ camp although we have still to see a completion. You have more points pledged than the GKs but they seem more productive at this stage. Still, it’s early days… The LatD on the other hand seem more static. I expected to see a number of crazy Chaos versions of Imperial Guard vehicles but so far activity is kind of subdued. I consider the LatD and the Agents that converter’s playground – so hopefully we’ll see more of them next week.

XENOS:

The Aeldari not only managed to bring onboard one more participant, they also managed to raise their average vow to 805pts – at par with the Tau and slightly below the SWs. Within the Xenos context they have the lowest following (why?) and in terms of points they are only ahead of the Orks. Speaking of which, they have 5 participants, but they have the lowest average vow in the Xenos Faction and the second lowest overall (after the Deathwatch). More participants will make a difference and so will be some meaningful re-vowing. The Tyranids also have 5 participants and an average vow of ca. 550pts – a pleasant surprise vs. last year. A few more participants could transform the Tyraninds (and Gene-cults) standing in the ETL quite substantially. As things stand now, they are third among the Xenos in terms of points pledged and they also have a completion! That leaves the two Forums that compete more aggressively for the top position in the Xenos Faction: The Necrons and the Tau. The former seem to marginally lead in terms of participants that, in principle, gives them more depth for the long term while the latter have considerably higher average vow (250pts+) and they have had a huge completion that allows them more re-vowing. However, the first and foremost consideration should be to bring in more new participants as everything hinges on this metric.

AoD-L

Well, the loyalists had a jump in participants this week. This is extremely important, especially as their average vow was maintained to the highest of the entire ETL! And they have more than 1k points completed already, so productivity (even at this early stage) seems in good shape. However, their Traitor arch-rivals have more completed points and an average vow, although lower, still pretty strong! You need to watch-out and the more new participants that join the better. It’s still recruiting period after all. Oh, and your’e also pretty close to the SWs too! Can you beat them?

AoD-T

The Traitors hold their ground – but things are not that rosy. Yes with 9 participants and 10 vows they are not that far behind from the Emperor’s lap dogs. However, the number of participants is the single more important metric in the ETL and on that you lag behind. That, combined with the lower (but still strong) average vow means that the Loyalists have some 50% more points pledged. This is a tough thing to topple but one than can be addressed by more recruits. Hopefully Week 3 will be kind to you!

It's a small thing, but when you spoke of the Astra Militarum as having the highest average vow I believe you had referenced the Imperial Agents stats by accident.  We have at least one thing over them!  Interesting write-up as always.

Captain Semper, just a quick question - I have a Glaive that's been sitting on my desk unpainted since 2014, and I'd like to finally make a vow that includes it. However, since there are no 40k rules for (and I'm not a Heresy player), is there any issue if I vow it as a counts-as Falchion?  Same number of weapons etc., and with 8E rules there's no difference between a turret/casemate tank, so it should be okay - is that right? Thanks!

I guess.... yeah, it's really very close from an effort point of view, I see no reason why not... Besides the Glaive is more expensive vs. the Falchion in HH which suggest it's less effective in battle? Or more situational at least. So Yes, go for it! :tu:

+++ETL VII - WEEK 3 UPDATE+++

So, ETL VII Week 3 is over and we’re entering Week 4 – the last full week of recruitment! So what happened? Let’s see:

Week 3 results:

FACTION: ADEPTUS ASTARTES
The Faction retains the most participants and the most points pledged but this has yet to translate into the highest score due to a relatively low completion rate. In particular the Space Marines(the leaders within the Faction in terms of participants and points pledged) have added 3 new participants this week completed some 550pts. But neither the new additions nor the completed points were enough to put them in the lead within the Faction as their completion ratio is only 4.4%. Still, it’s early days for them, and they sure do have the resources – so it’s a waiting game here. The BAsadded 2 participants, but they were more productive in their completions, driving their completion rate to 6.5% for zero last week. Last year they had an amazing completion ratio that effectively gave them first position, so I’d expect some (nasty?) surprised from them! The DAshowever seem to have a much more focused performance at this stage, with the highest completion rate of 8.4% which naturally translates into a higher score. There are to worrying issues though: they only added one more participant in Week 3 and they have the smallest average vow in the Faction – and among the smallest in the ETL. Both these issues are very worrisome and should be addressed in Week 4 – the last chance to recruit! Which leaves us with the SWs. Well, they have managed to reach 20 participants – not a mean feat – but still lagging vs. every other Astartes. Their average vow is strong at 821pts but their lack of participants is the single most important handicap. This is the last full Week to recruit so make the most of it! Having some early completions and re-vowing won’t hurt either…

FACTION: IFOR
Well, something people might not have expected, but the IFOR currently leads the scoreboard among the other Factions due to their amazing completion rate of 20%! However, it’s early days yet and this is more of a marathon than a sprint. Still, good news as it allows for more re-vowing in the near future thus amplifying their resources. Oh, and hopefully will raise their average vow – which is currently the lowest among all factions! Also, it’s high time to make the last Faction-wide effort to recruit – I cannot stress this enough!

The Adepta Sororitasare very close to my heart. Despite the expected release of their brand-new Codex and range later this year, they still have 5 participants who also are quite productive! With a 25% completion rate, one can identify a certain élan in this Forum and one can ask for no more! The AdMechunfortunately did not add any new participants this week – and their completion rate of 7% does not suggest any great momentum at this stage… So, what needs to be done? Hopefully we’ll see more AdMech participants – this is imperative! Seriously, the AdMech has an amazing range and new stuff on the way, and don’t forget, there is nothing stopping you painting them as Dark Mechanicum! Having said that, increasing the average vow is also needed as it’s some 160pts below the ETL average. So more early completions would be most welcome! Take for example the Imperial AgentsForum. They also suffer from small following and a lack of new recruitments, but the completion rate is the highest in the ETL which resulted into the Agents having the highest score in the ETL by the end of Week 3!!! This of course is not sustainable – not with such small following… But let’s hope that following will increase: The Agents are a great choice for those who want to commit with small or even single-miniature vows or with a whole Custode army that has an amazing range and not that challenging to paint! But the undisputed leader of the IFOR Faction is the Astra Militarum– or the Guard for the veterans! The trick here is to increase participation as much as possible a you’re not just comparing with other IFOR Forums but with Tau and the Necrons, not to mention the LatD. One thing that new recruits for the Guard should bring is higher points’ value for their vows as currently the 399pts is not impressive. The Grey Knightsalso have a low average vow and unfortunately it seems their momentum seems to have stalled. Nothing happened last week. No new recruits, no completions, not even a status update! I sure hope things would change in Week 4 – the last full week to make new recruitments! Lastly the Deathwatch. Well, they have an almost 30% completion rate but a woefully low average vow – in fact it’s the smallest in the ETL by far! Here we can only hope that either new recruits or the re-vowing of the existing participants will come at a higher points’ value.

FACTION: REALM OF CHAOS
With 61 participants and average vow close to the ETL average, Realm of Chaos appears to be the second strongest Faction after the Astartes. However, the AoD is a close third so no time to relax! The fourth week would by catalytic!

The Chaos Space Marinesare in a very good shape and certainly will be the Forum to beat in order to win the ETL this year. They have the most participants than any other Forum and the most points pledged – although the loyalist Marines are not so far behind. They have a relatively small completion rate at this point but that’s just optics. With an average vow spot-on on the ETL average it’s only a matter of time to produce results. Truth is, the challenge is for the loyalist Marines to up their game, as CSMs seem to have the edge at this point. The Daemonsand the LatDhave remained static vs. last week in terms of tangible results, although the Daemons seem to be updating more frequently and generally looking more involved. Last full week for recruitment guys, let’s do the most out of it!

FACTION: XENOS
The Faction is doing fine all things considered. The Tau seem to be leading, but the Necrons and the Tyrands are also in close support – whereas the Orks and the Aeldari had a good week too. The bottom line? The Xenos can challenge the IFOR and that is BIG!

The Aeldarisaw completions and re-vowing in Week 3 which is great news! It would be even better if they could bring more participants aboard this last full week of recruitments as it would make a world of difference! Two or three more participants may result in making the Aeldari one of the protagonists in the Xenos corner! The Necronson the other hand, definitely appear to be among the protagonists although Week 3 has not been kind to them. Just one new participant and no completions means that they are slipping vs. their arch-rivals, the Tau and the Tyranids are not so far behind either – nothing that a good Week 4 cannot fix! The Orkshad a great week – on the completions and re-vowing fronts at least – if not new participants. Still, with a completion rate of 45% - the second highest in the ETL – they should be proud of themselves. Apart from new recruits, which is a common denominator for all Forums, the Orks need to raise their average vow as at 317pts is the second lowest of the ETL and almost half of the ETL average. So yes, new vows are welcome but new vows at higher points are even more welcome! The Tauseem to be in the best position within the Xenos Faction. They have the most points pledged – if not the most participants – the most points completed and an average vow well above the ETL average which implies that new vows (either from new recruits or from re-vowing) can afford to come at lower points’ value. And there is a lot of activity. History has shown that the Forums that use the Outpost threads a lot generally do better! Lastly the Tyranids. Well good news here too. The average vow is lower than the ETL average but with 845 completed points and a completion ratio of 27% they sure look good. If they could only attract a few more participants, their relative position within the Xenos Faction could change dramatically. And wouldn’t that be fun?

FACTION: AoD

Well, the AoD has 23 participants. Hopefully that will increase, but even at the current level, some 4.5k behind Realm of Chaos in terms of pledged points. And talking about pledged points, the AoD has BY FAR the highest average vow in the ETL – more than twice that of Realm of Chaos and the Astartes. Although reaching the Astartes in absolute terms seems a bit of a stretch at this point, threatening the Realm of Chaos is not that far-fetched. Week 4 would be VERY crucial!

AoD-L made a jum this week, increasing their pledged points by some 6.5k pts through mainly frantic completions and re-vowing – although they did have a new participant coming on board. A similar, albeit more subdued, performance was recorded for the AoD-Tbut now they lack significantly behind the loyalists in terms of points pledged. Still, a higher completion rate translates to higher score at this point thus underlining that it’s not the pledged points that will ETLs, it’s the completed points. Now it’s Week 4, the last full week for recruitment. Both Outposts must do their best effort – it makes a hell of a difference!

CHALLENGES

Also some challenges have been issued and I'm repeating them here, so they will not be forgotten in the mists of time. If other such challenges have been made, notify me and I will add them to the list:

Captain Semper:

IF the SWs get a higherETL Score than the DAs by the end of the event, I will paint 5 SWs Battle leaders corresponding to the 5 top scoring SWs players. Furthermore, I'll customise those Battle Leaders to the specs of the 5 top scoring SWs players, so it could be anything from Power armour, Terminator Armour (any kind), Primaris or on Thunder Wolf.

Something similar to the "Debt to the Wolves" I did some years ago (see my sig).

ALSO:

Now the Wolves have 20 participants! If you guys make it 30 by the end of the recruitment period (July 1st), I, Captain Semper, Member of the Inner Circle and The Master of Recruits, will paint 5 Wolven straight out of the box and dedicate each one to the five higher scoring SWs participants in ETL VII.

Lord Raulf:

Lord Ranulf of the Thunderwolf Clan has heard your brave words, Captain Semper of the First. For the glory of Russ and the Allfather, I shall make you eat them!

Lord Ranulf pledges for the VLKA FENRYKA! Honour and Victory to the SPACE WOLVES Chapter!

RikuEru:

IF the DAs get a higher ETL Score than the SWs by the end of the event, I will paint a 5 man squad of Primaris Dark Angels and the DA Lieutenant (Zahariel?) dedicated to the 5 top scoring DAs players and honourable (Captain) Semper. (The difference in rank is merely on GWs part and not a personal attack)

While my collection and bits boxes do not allow me to make the "commission" as customizable as yours, I will ensure all 6 of them will be converted to be characterful, worthy Sons of the Lion and painted to the best of my abilities.

Slave to Darkness:

IF the Dark Angels or the vastly superior warriors of the Wolves get a higher score than the Chaos Marine faction I will dedicate a mini to the top three Fraeter from that forum. I would go five but I lack the required bits to do so, and if both forums beat Chaos Ill do the top three from both...
