I'm back(not sure where to post this)

Welcome back!  I don't think the new Contrast paints would be ideal for Custodes because the paints don't come in any metallic colors.  If you wanted the easiest way to paint them, I'd recommend using the Retributor Gold spray, wash some green/brown/purple ink in the recesses, silver edge highlight.  The contrast paints could work on the spear blades and red plumes/cloth, though.

Welcome back :) I agree with Aarik, Custodes are - usually - shiny so that's the better approach to take. With the likes of metallic sprays and highlighting compounds you can get very nice golds without too much effort for example.

Of course, this is assuming you're going for the classic painting scheme :P

The contrast paint look like they will be good for the plumes, cloaks, leather and power weapons so should help speed up the painting after you have the gold down.

What may be interesting to try is airbrushing a bright gold over a white basecoat and washing a couple of times with a thined down contrast paint. Maybe then one final gold highlight depending on how it looks.

No idea if that would work, but i might experiment with some spare custodes shields when I get my hands on some contrast paints

That's not NMM though. NMM uses not-metallic colours with strong highlights to give the illusion of metal. Hence why it's called Non Metallic Metal.

The contrast paints are going to be great for painting textured stuff (especially things with scales and fur), but for Custodes armour I think you're better off with the aforementioned Retributor Spray, washes and highlights.

The warhammer community page had this picture of some models painted using the contrast paints over a metallic base coat.

If you are going with a gold or silver look, there might not be a need to use contrast.

But if you want to do a different color metal it could be worth looking into for at least a test model.

Now it might be the lighting of the photo, but it is hard for me to tell that the red is over metal, or maybe that one was over gold instead of silver.

The green one on the other hand looks really good.

Sadly Contrast have no metallic color within their range so unless you're gonna do Solar Watch or Shadowkeepers they're not great. Anyway painting golden bois is not that difficile: spray can of retributor armor, reichland flashshade gloss on thhe whole miniature, then a bit of drybrush and you've done the 90% of the task.

Obviosly theb you can use Contrast paints for the non metallic parts like shoulder pads or mantles.

So I'm painting my Custodes in solar watch colours. Originally I was following the Warhammer tv video for them (corax white with diluted sepia wash, gold shoulder pads with red) however I'm now experimenting using wraithbone as my basecoat instead of corax which I think gives a much nicer hue for the armour, I'm also using a contrast red for the shoulder pads. I plan to try doing the shoulder pad fully gold first as I've seen that as a base gives the red a gorgeous dark look to it.

Otherwise if you want to do them standard gold then retributor armour spray & a sepia or fleshshade wash over it would be good and then whatever colour you want for the plume, weapons and shoulder pads.

What about the new Forgeworld Air paints that have been added to the retail line?  I picked up Thallax & Valdor Gold, probably going to grab some Relictor Gold tomorrow.

Has anyone used these for Custodes? Any pictures?

As this thread is Custodes/Painting themed, I might also ask here instead of making a new thread.

Does anyone have an attractive, and ideally easy, recipe for the 'burgundy' type color GW paint on their Custodes vehicles inlaid panels? I'm putting together a Battlestar Galactica I mean a Coronus Grav Carrier and would love to know how to achieve something at least similar to what they do.

Mask and airbrush different tones to create a light to dark transition? I imagine such large panels will take a while to do nicely with a brush.

Also bump for the above question ^^
