Explaining my list

Recommended Posts

Ok, here it is. Do I absolutley HAVE to explain every unit's capabilities and wargear to my opponent, or am I within my rights to say, here is my list, my codex, and chapter approved, feel free to look it up for yourself. I annotate all my lists with page numbers for unit dataslates, and they can find the chart for weapon profiles easy enough, and the Chapter Tactics are all on the same page as well.

I am fine with helping a newer player learn the game, but I resent being interrogated about my list. All my models are WYSIWYG, so "what weapons does that one have" gets really old really fast.

So, full run-down of EVERYTHING, or here is my list and source material, have at it?

You don't have to do anything. However explaining your list to your opponent so he understands what you are capable of is just generally a nice thing to do and prevents frustration. Always keep in mind that you are playing WITH your opponent first and against him only second.

That being said for your regular opponents it should be enough to tell him your units and their loadout before deployment begins since he should know what your army is capable of.

After you are done presenting your army always ask if there are any open questions. If your opponent says 'no' then he can't complain afterwards.

My normal approach is to say the unit, rough loadout and the names/ common use name* of unit special rules then on to the next unit.  I expect (& will) interupt before going on to the next unit to ask about weapons... ie firepike thats just a meltagun with extra range?  then at the end pause for a bit just to make sure theres no questions

eg... "Unit of of 6 Dominos with 4 stormbolters & an Imag, sissup (sgt) has a stormbolter, they have a scout move", then move on to the next unit.

*ie say that my seraphim have deepstrike instead of what its actually called...

I feel like the 'look it up yourself' approach is going to lead to long, slow games in which your opponents needs to stop every few minutes to thumb through your codex to find units and rules he's unfamiliar with.

For me, it seems about right to outline each unit's rules and abilities so that they don't come as a surprise to your opponent. You want to beat him with better play, not because you didn't tell him what something could do.

Plus in this edition it's already difficult enough to predict your opponents army if you haven't played against it that often even without having to look up each unit yourself simply because there are dozens of Stratagems available. Hell I know many people who only play once or twice in a month at best who don't even know most of their own Stratagems.

Although I have started taking two copies of my list printed out from BattleScribe*... one for me & one for my opponent so they can check any/ everything on they fly.  I do (most of the time) have the rule books/ index /codex/ CA/ FAQs etc required as well so we can double check what BS has against the GW offical.  As it helps the whole explaining thing :teehee:

*other army builders are available

  • 1 month later...

I have this problem because I play almost exclusively Space Marines of some variety.

A lot of the Strategems are really situational and I forget about them because I never use them.

I show up to games with a printed list that can be handed out so that if there's ever a question it's a quick grab and no one has to touch anyone else's phones. I do this to avoid any possible miscommunication on my part about my lists and it has helped both my memory and my opponent's throughout the game. Special bonus for me I like formatting text. Just because my armies are WYSIWYG (with rare exceptions) doesn't mean my opponent has any idea, or real interest in learning, what those are so I do my best to be accommodating.
