Magnetising hellblasters

Recommended Posts

So  to my pleasant surprise I won a box of hellblasters for my primaris army in a tournament. Which means I have not had my usual endless thinking time about how I want to model them prior to buying them.

The problem is that I like the look of the heavy plasma incinerators more than the other options but it really does look like the regular incinerators are the better all-round choice on the table. So that means I need to go with magnets if at all possible.

From looking at the sprues I think this should be possible with magnets in two places on each model :

* Between the backpack and the power pack Largish magnets here

* Between the underside of the incinerator and the end of the cable - with magnetised cannister things (part 15) as the alternative fit for normal incinerators. Very small magnets, this is not weight-bearing.

So my question for my primaris brothers is has anyone attempted this and if they have are there any gotchas or tips I should know about before I start wielding the drill bits and magnets?

Well, I don't know how strict your local gaming society is, but if I were your opponent I wouldn't really care about the exact gun that's on there. If you like the look of the heavy then go for it. I'd say it's too much of a hassle to magnetize them to be honest. I do the same for my intercessors, I have a mix of variants in my squads and nobody has issues with it (I simply use the rifles on everything gamewise). You don't really see the difference from a distance and if you state up front what they are and you have it on your list then it's all good.

But hey, if you want to magnetize the hell out of them, go for it!

Having recently built the heavy hellblasters - I don't think magnetizing is easy. I doubt anyone will care about the different muzzle (most probably won't even notice), but the power cables could be an issue. As they are all shaped differently, you'd have to find the right one for each marine every time you switch to heavy. Also they don't allow any different posing without bending/cutting the cables, each gun has to end up where it is intended by the designer.

If I were you, I'd just stick with the heavies, and if you really need more regular hellblasters, there are cheaper pushfits (there's a smaller starter box for half price of Dark Imperium, with 3 units+HQ per side). Also, every set of sprues (5 models) has 2 leftover guns - a box of 10 means you can convert 4 other primaris bodies to regular hellblasters in addition. And considering hellblasters draw pretty much all of the fire, having some with more range and cover probably won't hurt either.

I went with the easy option of just getting 5 hellblasters of each variant (so 15 in total, the DI ones and one box kit). Perhaps not the method to go if you want to be able to field more numbers of the same variant, but I frankly think magnetizing them would be hell if you wanted to be very WYSIWYG about it.

I can’t see any whose not a GW official being that anal about that level of wysiwyg. I don’t want to fiddle with the cabling so I used the muzzle for the heavy, the bottles for the rapid fire and going to add the scopes so I can count as any of the variants.

I would have a very low opinion of anyone who gave you a hard time about WSIWYG like this.  Just make sure you're consistent; don't have one squad of heavies be heavies, and the other one rapid fire.

I doubt if anyone would but I set my own standards and don't like to fall short of them. Also having been building Tau for a few years I am pretty handy with the magnets.

The first prototype one is magnetised and it seems to work pretty cleanly if I put the main magnet between the body and the backpack so the packpack and power pack are all one unit. It does mean I will need another set of backpacks if I want to run them as regular incinerators but those seem easy and cheap enough to pick up on ebay.
