3k terror assault, really after feedback

The Dr

Recommended Posts

So think Ive got a list ironed out just looking for feedback. Was hoping to get a leviathan in there but not sure how it would fit.

It is for a campaign with friends and will be facing space wolves, blood angels and, my chief concern, iron hands with a lot of armour. I’m a little concerned it doesn’t feel very “night lords” but maybe I’m over thinking it. Thanks in advance.

First off, good to see another Night Lord - Ave Dominus Nox, brother . As a fellow Night Lord - albeit a Loyalist one - yes, we exist - I can understand what you're trying to do with this list. You've done several things very well - Full Volkite on your Terror Squads are absolutely the way to go. An assault squad with an attached Apothecary to bubble-wrap Curze is excellent as well. Your Flyers are good and can help with anti-armour and anti-air, so that's also good. However, I think you've made a couple common mistakes that I myself made when I started playing that I hope to help you avoid going forward.

As a Legion, we have several key strengths: A Talent For Murder (ATFM) is awesome, our Terminators can Deep Strike regardless of the Rite of War, and our ICs can give fear to their unit for a measly 5pts, which coupled with A Talent For Murder can be brutal. However, we rely on one thing heavily to succeed: Strength of NUMBERS. Our Terminators and Jump Pack units count as double when counting for ATFM, so that helps, but Terror Squads only go to ten men at most, so you will rarely be outnumbering anything unless you really get lucky with the Volkite shots before you get into the assault phase. Also, the Heavy Support restriction to one HS choice is tough, but doable with the right unit.

Now, to the problems.

1) Except for the Assault Squad, none of your units will really benefit from ATFM.

2) I'm assuming you mean for the Chaplain or Sevatar to go into your short-handed Terror Squad, but that leaves the other (and your second Apothecary) with nowhere to go, which is a big problem.

3) Your Chaplain should really have a jump pack to roll with that assault squad, otherwise he is wasted.

4) Your Terminators, while fluffy with some Lightning Claws, aren't really a big enough unit or have a focused weapon loadout as they stand. Our Terminators need to be geared to go after two things: Independent Characters and Armour. That means Combi-Plasmas for shooting, and Chainfists, Thunder Hammers, and Power Fists for hitting.

5) Nostraman Chainglaives are very fluffy, but don't have the killing power of a Power Fist. And you'll need that StrengthX2 in Horus Heresy a lot. A Thunder Hammer or Power Fist on your Assault Sergeant will add enormously to what that unit can threaten.

6) While your Flyers are strong, you picked one of the weakest HS units to fill your lone slot. This alone is one of your biggest problems.

For point of reference, here is my 3K Terror Assault list:

HQ

Praetor, Legion [200pts]: Cataphractii Pattern Terminator Armour, Trophies of Judgement, Master-Crafted Paragon Blade, Combi-Bolter, Digital Lasers, Teleportation Transponder

Elites

Terminator Squad, Legion [500pts]

  • Teleportation Transponder
  • Terminator Sergeant: Chainfist, Combi-Bolter
  • Terminator: Combi-Plasma, Chainfist
  • Terminator: Combi-Plasma, Chainfist
  • Terminator: Combi-Plasma, Thunder Hammer
  • Terminator: Combi-Plasma, Power Fist
  • Terminator: Combi-Plasma, Power Fist
  • Terminator: Plasma Blaster, Power Fist
  • Terminator: Chainfist, Plasma Blaster
  • Terminator: Pair of Lightning Claws
  • Terminator: Pair of Lightning Claws

Troops

Terror Squad [275pts]

  • 9x Executioners, 10x Volkite Chargers
  • Headsman: Artificer Armour, Melta Bombs, Nostraman Chainglaive

Terror Squad [275pts]

  • 9x Executioners, 10x Volkite Chargers
  • Headsman: Artificer Armour, Melta Bombs, Power Axe

Terror Squad [300pts]

  • 9x Executioners, Flamer, 2x Heavy Chainblades, 7x Volkite Chargers
  • Headsman: Artificer Armour, Melta Bombs, Plasma Pistol, Power Fist

Heavy Support

Leviathan Siege Dreadnought Talon [925pts]
Leviathan Siege Dreadnought: Armoured Ceramite, Cyclonic Melta Lance, Siege Drill, 2x Heavy Flamers

Leviathan Siege Dreadnought: Armoured Ceramite, Storm Cannon, Siege Claw, 2x Heavy Flamers

Leviathan Siege Dreadnought: Armoured Ceramite, Siege Claw, Siege Drill, 2x Heavy Flamers, Phosphex Discharger

Lords of War

Shadowsword [525pts]: Heavy Stubber, Pairs of side sponsons, each with one Lascannon and one twin-linked Heavy Bolter, Space Marine Legion Crew

At the risk of sounding like I'm bragging, this list rarely loses. In no way am I telling you to copy it, but rather I hope you can see some of the strengths that it has that your list lacks. Three Leviathans and a Shadowsword (or in your list, Kurze) will make it hard for your opponent to decide which way to aim their big guns and their deathstar units. The Terminator squad is maximized for ATFM, and armed to bring down anything on the board. With the Praetor attached, they also cause Fear and Deep Strike to add yet another extremely hard-hitting unit to the table. All these threats mean your Terror Squads will actually have the chance to get into position and rip and tear like they want to do without getting shot off the board turn 1.

Hey mate,

Glad there are some players still on the NL was a little worried. That was around the 20th list I'd come up with starting from fresh and I was making a few mistakes but I just couldn't work out what I was missing. I did get feedback early on to put the terror squads in drop pods (still not sure why when they have infiltrate) and to take flyers. As much as I like flyers putting all my eggs in that basket was concerning and didn't feel right. This list I think makes a little more sense based off your guidelines.

I was going to take Konrad but I think I'm just too blind to how to get the most out of him or even how to use him. Sevatar letting me infiltrate an additional three units up helps the Terminators and stuff but it still might be work.

Honestly can't thank you enough I've been at it for quite a while and a lot of information I've found is quite outdated (even some painting guides pictures have expired) with new units etc in the latest books and the community so far beyond "beginner" it feels very daunting again especially with this type of money to get the Legion up and going. Hopefully this will work;

Sev and an apothecary go with the Terminators, chaplain (and apothecary) goes with the assault squad so it should all cause fear. Additional apothecary goes with a terror squad.

Only concern ls I have no i guess is if the javelins were worth it, if the primaris will do the work by its own and if cataphracti was the best choice to infiltrate. But it at least feels a little more focused and "night lord" so I'm excited for that

Should say I am planning on focussing on a loyalist force for these guys just in our campaign we were short traitors. So glad to see that it's at least viable to take them as "good guys"

Apothecaries cannot join Terminator squads. You'd need a Primus Medicae consul for that.

Sevatar's (double-buffed) warlord trait feels kinda obsolete in this configuration, since the only unit in your list that's able to outflank is the Javelin squadron.

Infiltrating the Cataphractii might just do the trick, but I feel they might be better served by DS'ing or deploying in a dedicated transport.

Sevatar's  Master of the Atramentar  special rule is completely wasted, since he deploys with the Terminator unit.

I feel like Sev brings precious little to the list in its current incarnation. Ditching him and going for a HQ unit in Cataphractii armour might be much more worth it.

The Javelins will be totally worth it, they're golden.

I'd either set them up with Multi Melta & Lascannon, or (cheaper) just keep the Heavy Bolter & Cyclone and add some HK missiles. The first setup being an anti-armour

configuration, the second one being more effective against infantry and light armour. One might argue you have enough anti-infantry firepower already, given all the Volkites on your Terror Squads.

Thanks unknown. Think I've got close to the finished product and added Night Raptor for the "flair" but may swap them for Konrad or a lightning etc once push comes to shove. Think Curze would make more sense in this style of list but really can't see where the points would come from to add hi.

Use 3 of your remaining 4 points to give your Assault Squad's Sergeant a Combat Shield and I think you're golden, mate. Personally I think the Night Raptors don't compare very well to the generic Assault Squads in terms of cost vs. actual delivery on the table, but they're fluffy as hell and great looking models so that's totally up to you. This list looks fun and hard-hitting and with a little play-testing I think you'll find out what works best for you and alter it accordingly. Good luck and good hunting, brother of the VIIIth.
