Trying to make BT competitive.

Recommended Posts

Brothers, Are Black Tide lists good now? I am trying to get back into the game with my first chapter playing. I played BT in  5th edition. I tried with a cc oriented black tide list before against necrons. it was so much fun. Now with the new FAQ I'm thinking of making them gun-line. I also have a good amount of mechanized tanks. I have 4 LRC, 8 Rhinos (Razorbacks), and one LR. and I know I need to invest in scout models to fill in the 20 man blobs.

I want to be competitive. I also wonder if Loyal 32 and Crusader knights would be good to use with them.

Lareoth has a good website for you as well (which I am a contributor of /plug). And this post reminds given the big faq and et all. It’s likely time for a new IM post. The short answer in regards to black tide;

The most ‘competitive’ way to play Black Templars is Black Tide. The most competitive usage of Templars is our smash Marshall variants + 3 scouts, then EChampion and Cenos in a soup list.

The better way to demonstrate what I mean. As a whole our chapter has let’s call it properties. First is our Unique Units, second the Vigilus SB Detachment, and third is chapter tactics, relics, stratagem and warlord traits.

This is brevity summarization, expect a fuller article on Lareoth blog later this month. Unit wise we have, 3 SC, Crusader Squad and Cenobyte Servitors. One of those cases from a practical standpoint fills a role ala Librarians (a Specialist HQ for filling HQ slot 3).

In general Crusader Squad is our most important thing. You have three ways to run, Tide, Faux Devi, and Fire Support (8-11 man Crusaders). I am personally not fan of the latter squad. Faux Devi has other issues. Tide however is key in that your paying similar points per attack as elite units will. And we can deflect some issues of MeQ durability this edition with allocation fun times. Largely speaking Tide is what our rules mostly support.

Cenos are one of the most blatant examples of that. Super cheap shock immunity. Reasonably hard to kill for what they are. To the point your basically better shooting the Crusader squad unless your going for first strike/blood. But larger squads also play well with things like Helm which in combination reduces our near for Congo lines significantly.

Our Vigilus detachment fixes our issue of lacking traditional or good Hammers with Suffer Not/Master Sword and Sword Brothers. But requires CP for fuel. So we want to do something like troop spam. But given small squad in Sword brothern we cannot foot walk and if we Razor them it’s a target. Meaning we need a large squad to absorb overwatch.

Our Chapter Tactics wants us to run melee, but it’s strange you don’t want too many units rolling as that would essentially defeat the purpose or too few and better use a CP reroll. Tide squads are not ‘sacrificial’ and want to charge. Unlike MSU squads which are mass charging anyways to gonna make it, Tide are more charge dependent.

Finally our trait (codex) helps counter assault. Tide squads are slow and relatively inflexible. And prone to assault. The 6” HI helps. A more detailed article will come later. Due to how our rules and more interact they basically heavily nudge you to playing tide or not using most of half of our unique aspects.

No question is stupid :)

And sorry that i use your thread for a personal question.

In our special detachment captains are able to be veterans.

Is that only the captain unit or terminator captains / bike captains and so on too?

Any unit that has the CAPTAIN keyword, which appears to be all of them!

I know i may be asking stupid questions but when will Lareoth to unit analysis?

I feel like I am a genie in a bottle here. Heh. I will get on that and hopefully have the unit analysis updated within the next week or so. I have been painting like a mad-man for a tournament coming up.

Can you explain few terms to me?

What is Smash Marshal? Special loadout?

Soup list?

Faux Devi squad? Is it devastator imitation?

Schlitz sometimes needs to provide a link to the glossary. (Perhaps he could link it into his signature?)

Smash Marshal/Marshal Law is a jump pack armed Captain with a thunder hammer and storm shield. Served with the new Vigilus warlord trait he is comparable* to Slamguinius.

A soup list is one which combines detachments from multiple codexes/codices. Common meme elements are:

- the Loyal 32 Battalion (3 squads of guard and two company commanders, as they are a cheap and cheerful command point farm.)

-A Knight Castellan (but maybe not since the FAQ?)

A Faux Devi Squad is a Crusader Squad of 4 initiates and a Sword brother, armed with a special weapon, a heavy weapon and a combi-weapon. (Usually plasma, combi-plasma and las

*It's up for debate which is better. But it's probably Slamguinius.

Adel I’ll do just do that, also in regards to Smash Marshall/Marshall Law (or Sigislash), I use the former for Hammer&Shield and latter two for Teeth&Shield.

Adel do you have a glossary link list?
