Baneblade and magnets

Recommended Posts

A long long time ago in a galaxy not far away, I bought a Baneblade kit ...

I started assembling it then put it aside for "later" ... I recently revisited it and thought it would be nice to be able to use all available weapons instead of making a hard choice. So I decided to use magnets. It is always best to plan the use of magnets before gluing anything but since I always work with sub-assemblies, there was not much work to undo. I cut off the heavy bolters I had glued to the lateral weapon's mount. You can either have the heavy bolters or heavy flamers. As for the main gun, the choice is between a battle cannon or a siege cannon.

I used 5x1mm, 3x1mm and 3x2mm magnets.

As the barrel of the battle cannon is hollow, I used a little bit of foamboard and plasticard to have a base on which to glue a 5x1mm magnet. I drilled the interior wall of the siege cannon and added plasticard behind it as it was only 1mm thick. For the gun mount on the turret I used a 3x2mm magnet, it fits nicely and requires only drilling. I made sure there was no gap between the guns and gun mount before gluing the guns' magnets in place.

For the sponsons, the best way would have been to drill the weapon's mount and insert a 3x2mm magnet but since this was already glued in place I opted for gluing 3x1mm magnets on each side of it. It is a bit of a pain to position nicely. For the heavy bolters and heavy flamers, just remove the plastic pin and drill to insert the magnets. As the weapon's mount magnets protrude by 1mm you need to remove enough from the heavy bolters and heavy flamers to ensure they can still be put inside the sponson. That is why I gave them a clean shave, so that nothing protrudes from the weapons' main bodies.

Now, I still need to add magnets to be able to position the sponsons on the front, middle or back section of the lateral armour plates. Then maybe some more magnets for allowing a choice between officer, gunner, closed hatch on the turret.
