Green marble using cork

Recommended Posts

For three large bases I wanted to try to paint green marble, and thought I’d try using cork for a bit of an experiment...

I first basecoated the cork with cheap art paint, Ivory.

Then tried Waywatcher Green Glaze, concerned that Biel Tan Green Shade would be too dark...

The former turned out too light, and the latter just right.

So I redid them all with Biel Tan, then drybrushed them heavily with the Ivory,

...then White.

And finally two coats of gloss varnish.

I think they’ll look better with the base rims repainted black and put some debris and other stuff on there -will try to do that soon and take new photos - but what do you think so far?

I’m happy with it. Not ecstatic but happy.

It looks good for stone, for marble I think it would need some more veins and a smoother surface. Unpolished marble looks quite unimpressive. Using the same technique with a grey or brown colour would probably make great granite.

Maybe use a different colour for the seams to emphasize that they are different tiles.

I've also seen a good method for painting marble using sponges. Sadly, I think the website that the tutorial was on is now defunct.....

I remember the method enough to be able to do it for my Knights when I get around to painting them though. Once I get around to painting them, I could also post the method here?

Please do so. Or in a new thread if it’s not using cork, that way it might get more attention (or at least be better labelled ;) ).

Looking at the bases 24hrs on, I consider them an interesting experiment, but I’m not going to keep them.

I don't think it much resembles marble, but it does look like some of the high-end semi-rough-surfaced tile I've seen in various places. I like it, and shall be stealing the idea at some point. :smile.:

Ever seen unpolished marble? This is actually pretty accurate to what unpolished marble looks like. It's far more glossy, but that's fairly accurate.

I haven't successfully gotten a coloured marble yet, but I mixed up 1/2 glazing medium and 1/2 matte medium, along with some white paint. I thin it to apply as a glaze, and by going from a silver base with black squiggles thru a couple layers of glaze - squiggles - glaze and finally some black ink thin squiggle touchups it gives a great white marble finish. I'm not sure if that could be adapted to green or other colors.
