Emperor's spears wip log

Recommended Posts

So a good friend suggested I start my emperors spears and do a wip log.

So I guess this is the start.

I decided on the spears after reading ADB's fantastic book and with the etl competition I figured time to start

Since I'm learning and improving as I go expect quality to gradually improve

Thus I begin the story and painting adventures of the 8th warhost of the emperors spears. Led by captain Andraste

 Intro and update one

So this WIPlog will be mostly about the how and why I choose each element and why I decided of or against preticular items.

So a fellow B&C member mentioned this etl  challenge and suggested I take the opportunity to do a new army

I had mostly decided to a marine force and had my heart set on the charcadons.

Having read the books I liked there feel and flavor.

Then I heard about ADB's a spears of the emperor book and the chapter tactic that would have benifited the charcadons nicely.

Having acquired and read the book and the index astartes (witch is awesome)

I was torn so I elected to paint a squad of each to see which I preferred.

Origianly I wanted to paint the spears in a way that reflected the sky on a rainy day  using scale colors inn's mouth blue and related shades.

However gws lovely tutorial on painting spears gave me. A different pallette

Following there directions I painted using the time honored base shade highlight (hoeth blue /drake of nightshade/ fenrisian grey.

And I was pleased with the overall results

Vow 1 reivers

Obviously quality would improve as I learned and adapted

Once I had the models painted I had to do chapter symbols. And due to my hatred of water slide transfers I elected to order 3d printed overlays.
And squad markings in the form of roman numerals.
The helmet crests were another piece I had to order.

For the helmet color Ililed the metallic ish look of the white on the acetates from the index. ( I will try to find a way to do the blue metallic at some point)
So I painted them up from cream to white then used scalecolor white alchemy to give it a metallic sheen.

Thanks. I'll be updating this as I progress in the army and etl

Second update.

Catching up the log to my current position

So having chosen the emperors spears as my chapter and finishing the reivers from the first vow.

And the second vow consist of lots of infantry and my first challenge to paint a druidic librarian.

Which will be shown in a later update

With the intercessors I refined my technique and color pallette.  Adding scale colors garnet alchemy sapphire alchemy and black metal into the mix.

Garnet on the eye pieces and white metallic on the chest eagles.

I'm really pleased with how they turned out.

Intercessors vow 2

Also tried a new way to do the flesh on the helmlesss sargent.

Really pleased with how they came out

Next update was the suppressors.

I really like these guys

With them I decided to do something I've wanted to try

A barrel fade type thing

Heat distortion

Vow 2 suppressors gun berrels

I did the barrels by using sapphire alchemy as the base and dry brushing a blend of dark stars molten metels from blackened bronze to regency gold.
