Thanks guys. Do you think I can apply shade over the varnish? Never used shade before, I just paint to battle ready level 'cause I paint slowly.

I'm not experienced with varnish but I believe in some cases the varnish will make the shade flow into the recesses better.

Don't wash the whole model, just take a fine brush and paint the shade paint directly into the recesses of the model, armour panel lines, shoulder pad rim etc. I often don't like the look of my red marines until I get the shade stage done, then they just look...ready. more 3d, if that makes sense.

The 3rd Tactical Intercessor squad joins the ranks!

I think the banner sits nicely on the sergeant. Head, sword, jousting shield, and banner were enough to change his looks completely.

The assistant squad leader has a hidden chainsword (2nd ed. chainsword) on his belt, so I can use him as a sergeant if I opt to field to entirely different squads. I 've done the same trick with the first Intercessor squad I made.

Sergeant and assistant squad leader are from First Strike, grenadier from multi-part box, and the rest from Dark Imperium and First Strike.

Wings of fire indeed, and this is just the first half of the squad. Got another three that will change their hands a bit to make them look different.

The shading is natural light shade...

The models are less glossy up close, I'm just using my phone's camera.

Nice! Good idea to break up the mono-poses a bit!

Ah, I see. Well, red can sometimes look a bit flat without shading, but that might also be the light / flash itself. If you wanted to delve further into the whole shading thing, I’d suggest a brown or darker red tone, such as doombull brown or Khorne red painted thinly and directly into the recesses. Makes a hell of a difference! :) you can also advance the technique and add darker browns/even dark blue to the Khorne red to shade the darkest recesses. Just an idea!
