Night Lord shenanigans

Recommended Posts

I have a league game versus NL next week and would like to know what leadership shenanigans I should watch out for and how to avoid them. Any help here is greatly appreciated. I’ll be playing Blood Angels and Custodes.

Definitely still current.

If it's pure Night Lords, the biggest worry is probably butcher cannon Dreadnaughts and Nurgle Raptors as far as straight Ld. Fearsome Visage (-1Ld), Icon of Despair (-1Ld), Night Lords (-1Ld) for a total of -3 Ld off of 1 unit. Two more units can stack it up to 5, butcher cannons can tip it to 7. Host Raptorial strat will tip it to -8. That's before we add Spawn, other factions, or some of the pricier Forge World units. This sounds like a lot pieces, but you can pull this off with 1 unit of Nurgle Raptors (-3Ld), 1 Contemptor with butcher cannon (-3Ld), 1 Jump Lord (-1Ld), and the host Raptorial strat.

Most people think Ld is all about the morale phase, but if you add a couple Daemons that changes quickly. Slaanesh Daemons have a power called Cacophonic Choir that deals [(2D6+) - Ld] mortal wounds. With the new Slaanesh Contorted Epitome or the FW Keeper of Secrets, Zarakynel, this can get extra brutal. Zarakynel, with the right psychic powers, can bring -3 Ld, Cacophonic Choir, and still smite. The Contorted epitome has a bonus to psychic tests, so it has better odds of pulling off Cacophonic Choir and better odds of getting the higher wound count as well as the ability to cast Phantasmagoria (-1Ld) on the same turn. Also, the Contorted Epitome has a rule that makes units trying to fall back roll against their Ld to do so. This can trap units and even destroy models with a minimum flight speed if it is successfully charged. Night Lords and Daemons WILL have something that can charge it.

Best advice is, don't let your oponent control positioning. Ld penalties need to stack to be a legitimate weapon and not just a pest. Don't forget that Ld affects more than Morale. If you have units that auto-pass Morale or allow other units to do so, that's great. Position them appropriately. Remember that all armies have the strategem to auto-pass Morale, but do not use it as a crutch. You can only use it once per morale in matched play and it burns 2CP. Look out for Apostles or the Warlord Trait that make enemies roll twice for morale and use the worst result. Do not forget that Night Lords are still Chaos Space Marines. They still have the full arsenal and unit options and can do pretty much anything other Chaos Marines can do.
