Starting Necron From Scratch - Advice please

Hello everyone,

I am looking now ive finished my BT army and starting painting my tyranid army to possibly get  a Necron army. I play 2k friendly non competitive games with my son in our garage on a 6x4 battlemat.  I will buy stuff from 3rd party vendors no GW to save costs. So my question is as follows:

1. What advice would you give to someone starting from complete scratch looking to buy Necron?

2. Should i get an Apoc box for £80 with:

- 1 x Cryptek
- 6 x Canoptek Wraiths
- 6 x Tomb Blades
- 1 x Ghost Ark\Doomsday Ark

3. Should i also consider the start collecting box £40?

1 x Necron Overlord

1 x Annihilation Barge with Lord On Foot (which can be built as a Catacomb Command Barge)

12 x Necron Warriors

3 x  Scarab Swarms

5 x Immortals (which can be built as Deathmarks.)

4. What other units should i get?

5. What units should i avoid?

0. First off, welcome to the tombs! We’re always glad to have another Phaeron. (Side note—if you have anything already, please vow it for ETL by the end of the month—we need Phaerons for ETL. If you could, please.)

1. Be prepared to build lots of infantry. Warriors are our bread and butter, and are a pain in the servos to build. Immortals are easier, but you need lots of them, and everything else, like our elites.

2. Yes. It’s a strong group, with excellent value (65% cost retail, more since you have 3rd party), and the models aren’t warriors. However, I’m told that tomb blades aren’t the easiest to assemble either.

3. Also yes. You are getting an excellent deal as it is, again improved by 3rd party retailer. Warriors, immortals, a war machine, scarabs, and an overlord? You get five or six units from the box. It is insane value.

4. Get doomsday arks. They are OP for their cost, and their cannon are insanely good. Get three of them. (Build the one from the outrider detachment as a ghost ark though. You should have at least one to support your warriors.

4.5

Monoliths look cool, but need proper tactics to use them right, and is also dependent on local meta. If no one is really expecting them, go for it, but if not then I’d avoid them.

Doom scythes get a mention here in the in-between, as they are really only effective for Sautekh code, which is not always what you want to play.

5. Personally I would avoid flayed ones, at least when you are starting out. We have better melee units that are more killy and more survivable, with better delivery mechanisms, and the models are expensive, resin, and kinda ugly.

Beyond that we don’t have any units that scream *dont take*, as everything is generally good.

If you get a couple of outrider detachments, that fast movement with some scarabs can get up the board for t1 charges and threat saturation, with Cryptek and CP support for Reanimation protocols and adaptive subroutines (move, shoot/advance, and charge. Bring sautekh, advance, shoot, and charge in one turn with a unit). This is rather CP expensive, so maybe bring a battalion battery with immortals and lords for CP.

Overall, I think the two boxes you’ve named will give a nice core for your newly-resurrected legions.

We’re glad to have you with us, TFB. (We’d be gladder still if you could join us for ETL as well, but no pressure ;) )

Start with those two boxes. They are amazing value and give you units you will want and need.

Beyond that keep an eye on buy sell trade 40k groups on places like Facebook. Necrons are not super popular right now and some bargains can be found.

OK let's try this again! I had a response all typed up and closed the window by accident. :wallbash:

1. Build a bunch of tesla Immortals. I've avoided them forever since I had some "all my Crons must have gauss" clause from my days playing metal models out of a WD Codex and i COMPLETELY regret it.

2. Solid box, great units. It's well over $100 savings here in Canada, or basically get the DDA (I suggest building the DDA over the Ghost Ark) and Cryptek for free. If I was starting out this would be a 1st grab on my end.

3. Another great first grab. Troops are critical, though while I've used Warriors out of necessity since the dawn of 8th I sorely wish I had more tesla Immortals to add to the mix. I would suggest building the CCB over the Annihilation Barge but from what I gather you don't even need magnets to interchange between them.

4. Personally Doom Scythes are one of my favourite models GW has come out with, but I think with those two starter kits you'll have plenty to get rolling some dice especially in a casual setting. Once you play a bit with those models you'll have a much better idea of what you need to fill in the gaps.

5. In a gaming setting you have complete control over, which it sounds like you do, nothing is off the table. If you want to go out to tournaments and not just get rolled there is a very specific set of models that have seen successful use in that setting: Imotekh/Overlord, Immortals, DDAs, Doom Scythes, Tomb Blades are pretty much the sum of it. Used to be three Tesseract Vaults, a Cryptek, and some Scarabs.

Welcome to the crypts! :tu:
