Everchosen Contest PLOG (Guilliman)

Recommended Posts

So anyone whose seen my posts lately in the "Today in the Hobby" thread knows thst for the Everchosen painting competition I decided to paint Guilliman, and that I'm going to be tackling this as a project to also nail down NMM (as well as other things, like faces).

My goal is from now until my store's Everchosen selection day (TBD as it won't be the 29th due to being closed) to make some kind of progress on painting Guilliman, even if it's something small. And trust me some of the details are pretty small.

For June 29th's update here's the gold NMM I did for his shoulder pad:

I'll be tackling the blade this evening when I get home.

I also ran into a bit of a bind which means making a hobby supply run on Tuesday: I have a few dark blues and a lot of very light blues but no regular blues. In an effort to keep the colors consistent I will need some to keep the paint recipies easier to manage. So no blue armour until I sort that.

Good news is that there are a LOT of other things I can tackle first (like all the soft armour) so I will still be busy for tomorrow. Edited by Fulkes

Getting pictures of his laurel wasn't easy. Tried some copper NMM on it to keep the NMM going but to break away from gold so it stands put against his hair. Plus the it'll hopefully help frame his face when it's done. Edited by Fulkes

So I went down a rabbit hole trying to paint Guilliman's eyes yesterday and ultimately worked out part of my problem was the primer was too heavy (Chaos Black plus multiple layers of Grey Seer for the Zenithal) which partially obscured the details.

So I stopped Guilliman's head, managed to get the laurels and face apart again and took another crack at it last night.

...only for the pupils to end up wonky and the whites of the eyes to get lost in his new lighter skin tone. So I put him aside, went to bed in the early am and came back to it again this morning and got the best result I can manage right now:

And yes, I picked out shadows for his cheekbones, under his lip, his temples, eyes, nose and hairline. The stronger shadow on his left side is just the result of the room lighting and not paint.

So with all that it would seem like yesterday was a bust, but not all was lost. I managed to get the soft armour done though so I could fit some stuff together (namely the legs) to make placing highlights easier:

Oh, and I found put (accidently) that my phone has a manual focus option so hopefully pictures can be less potato.

I cpuldn't get the shiny armour looking right (I'll be honest, I like the blue darker than GW does, which should pop nicely with the gold later), so I opted for skipping it entirely and started work on the gold:

So the reason I decided to give the chest so many hot spots comes down to the way the chest plate is molded. Since there is many different angles that would either be hit by light or reflected light, I went with making it very shiny.

  • 2 weeks later...

It's been a long 8 days to replace Guilliman after my debacle last week with a bad attempt at repriming (Rustoleum and me will never get along it seems), but we're starting over, this time with a shinier blue and matching the gold's highlights to the blue's to give the overall model a feeling that it's all part of the same whole. The line edge highlight on thd blue next to the gold trim is a way to try and capture a bounce highlight from the gold. Most of this will be covered by his shin plates, but filling it all in makes it easier for me to keep the lines consistent.

Making everything nice and shiny!

All the odd looking blue edge highlighting will make more visual sense once I have the gold done since it's bouncing light back onto the blue.

I'll be coming back to the ankles and knees once the gold is done.
