More Last Chance to Buy Nonsense

Big ups to FW for giving us an excuse to panic buy a bunch of stuff for all those current/future projects we've been thinking about doing at some point.

 

It's that horrible, stressful, hobby-energy sapping time of year again!

 

We've got some Rhino doors, Land Raider Doors, one of the Character Series products and one of the big Mechanicum vehicles, and that's all I've found thus far. It's difficult because you can't seem to search for 'Last Chance to Buy' and you can't filter by it either on the mobile site.

None of this is particularly earth shattering, obviously. The Loyalist stuff all has alternatives, so no big loss there. The Macrocarid Explorator is a big one though, especially as the (demonstrably worse on the table) Karacnos Assault Tank is still up for purchase. As I said above, if you ever want to put Traitor Legion doors on a MkIIB Land Raider, then get to buying.

 

Hopefully this will be it for the next while, but they didn't really publicise this at all, so maybe come Friday everyone keep their eyes peeled in case there's more stuff coming.

 

EDIT - There's also Zone Mortalis Doors and the Deathstorm Drop Pod with Assault Cannons. Not thrilled about any of this.

Wow, and they didn't even sent a mail about it (or at least I didn't received anything). Do you know how long are these still available? 
I wanted to buy a set of SoH Rhino doors, but I just bought a Knight, and that purchase literally nullified my hobby funds for this month...  I wanted to buy Ferrus for Christmas and put some other stuff (like this set) to it, but it seem plans have to change. But I'm a fair bit disappointed...

Not a clue how long they'll be available, but my guess would be they went up on Friday. Worst case scenario that means they're coming down tomorrow.

 

Hopefully they'd do like last time and give it a couple of weeks, but they've been really quiet about this one.

Thank you for your answer. If it plays that way, I wouldn't be getting these :( I wish I had ordered them earlier, but I've never thought that these sets will go away in the near future...

Huh, I thought the Macrocarid Explorator was a much more recent release than 2016. I suppose considering it was the belated official model for a unit that started out as a build-your-own land raider slot, maybe it's not the worst loss? Shame about the Everything Else.

This is the same time of year that GW raises its prices, and roughly the same time as last year’s big cull. I assume it’s the end/beginning of their fiscal year. Expect it to be a regular event.

It's going because they reallocated everything into specialist games, Bligh died, 8th dropped and thus there was no more models or rules being made with interest extremely split. So of course sales dropped and they thought "hey, we should also do lotr from forgeworld"

They released a ton of models since 8th ed came out, so your assertion that no more models are being made is simply false.

This goes for your rules assertion as well considering a ton of new models received rules, not to mention book 8 just came out.

 

Look, I dont want to get into a whole thing here, but this idea of absolutes really irks me. Yes there was a reduction in releases and rules since book 8 came out, but to say that no rules and models are being made is a bit much. 

 

Yeah, were having another cull, it makes sense if you understand how the business operates. Resin requires a higher amount of manpower to make compared to plastic, so they will do a yearly cull of low sale models until they hire more laborers, which I'm not sure they're going to do any time soon with Brexit on the horizon and given the fact they manufacture everything in the UK. 

 

But with all that being kept in mind, from all that we hear internally, Heresy seems to be in a good spot as a business and as a game. Its not the grandiose thing that it was late 7th, and that's manly because a lot of 40k players switched to 30k because late 7th 40k was terrible with the formations and terrible codexes.

Now, a lot of people are becoming more dissatisfied with the state of 8th, and almost every global 30k group is seeing an upswing again in players, but even with all that its never going to go back to the level of pre 8th.

 

Losing the Mechanicum Explorator is sad, especially since it was such a beautiful model. The rest I can do without.

They look way cooler imho than the new plastic hover thingy.

@monolith there's some definite hyperbole to what I said, but that's kind of intentional.

 

You can see that the major releases between today and inferno are: a) everything that had to do with inferno b) everything that had to do with malevolence c) 2 consuls, 3 sicaran turrets, termite and assorted legion praetors.

 

And you can say it's a lot, but it really isn't when you consider that both inferno and malevolence were extremely delayed, giving the models extra time to be sculpted. And, a lot of those models were previewed at one event and then delayed 4-5 months before being released. Then compare those releases to the amount of specialist game content that's been pumped out.

I don’t think it’s something we should be so accepting of. This is a modeler’s game. It costs thousands of dollars to build a full-sized army, and we do it because of the level of detail Forge World has historically encouraged and allowed.

 

I have not learned to deal with losing Mk II armor. I don’t have a good answer for prospective Blood Angels players wondering how to build a jump pack-equipped HQ without going 3rd party, or for someone who wants to put graviton guns on their Dreadnoughts. The game’s rules and community culture do not match this business model.

 

Labor has little to do with it - it’s simply storage space and inventory management. If those are beyond their ability to deal with, they need to change how they package accessories or, failing that, change the rules to match their ability to sell things.

Or perhaps a third option - allow usage of third party bits. If this offends them, then perhaps they ought to supply the bits/models themselves.

I completely agree with carlismo. I don't think we, as the customers, should have to put up with the way FW roll this out. I'm largely supportive of FW generally, in that I don't personally buy from less legitimate sources and would always discourage others from doing so, and I give them the benefit of the doubt with regard to most 'business decisions'.

 

That said, the way the Last Chance to Buy thing is handled is generally pretty bad. They only put the LCTB filter back on the website this morning after a bunch of people (myself included) emailed and asked for it.

 

It would be much better if they could give advance notice, even a week, before things went LCTB, and then just cast as many as were needed to fulfill orders before taking them off sale. That would give everyone a bit more time to sort money out, to think 'Do I really need this' instead of panic-buying, and to order or not. As it stands the (intentionally or not) sneaky way they do it isn't working.

 

As an aside, slight win for me today as I was able to grab a legit NIB Macrocarid Explorator off Facebay for a fair bit less than retail price. Pretty happy about that one. :D

They make skinny doors for Necromunda dont they? And Rogue Trader Kill Team? (I prefer the resin, obvs, but when people have plastic options they choose plastic)

The Necromunda doors were advertised at one point as being compatible with Zone Mortalis. I actually tried them once with a friend’s ZM Set - they probably would be if it weren’t for the shrinkage that happens with ZM tiles as the resin cools. For their set, it would have taken a pretty dramatic amount of sanding to get the Necromunda doors to fit. They did work really well for any doorways that were split across two ZM tiles - you could leave a ~1/8” gap between ZM tiles and the Necromunda doors worked great. YMMV.

well, the Zone Mortalis boards were always a bit to expensive for my taste, hope this might mean they're readying for a more affordable redesign.... except this is GW and making things affordable for customers seems to be the opposite of their policy at the moment.
