For Baal - Snorri's Blood Angels Hobby log - Contemptor!

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

been a long time since I last posted some pictures here, and at that time, I used a dedicated thread for it. So, with the ETL 2019 being underway in full speed, I thought I might give it a go again.

In this thread, you'll find a bit of my hobby progression regarding my only 40k army, the Blood Angels. This is your Captain Obvious speaking, coulda read the title...

So without further ado, I'm glad to present to you my most recent additions to my no-longer-stagnant force:

Donatos Aphael and my interpretation of his weapon-loadout:

Donatos Aphael, 2nd Company Captain

for Baal.

back

side

Some of you may remember him as an unfinished project on my workbench, and he's only recently seen completion.

Also fairly fresh out of production is the Librarian Dreadnought. I painted both of these before getting into the ETL, I swear!

Librarian Dreadnought

And since I've already mentioned it, I've pledged 6 devastators with 2 lascannons and rocket launchers and the points for a Armourium cherub and like 4 squads of scouts for this year's ETL.

I, Snorri, rise to the challenge of E TENEBRAE LUX on the side of the Blood Angels forum and vow to complete 4 Scout Squads, one with heavy bolter and one with camo cloaks and sniper rifles, one Devastator squad with 6 marines, two lascannons and two rocket launchers for a total value of 428 pts on or before September 1st, 2019. Success will bring me eternal glory and failure will doom me to wear the Badge of the Oathbreaker until the year-end.

Since I've mostly worked on the Scouts, I've added the progress shots below. Their red is shaded and highlighted in quite stark contrast, but it doesn't show too well in the pictures.

They'll get gray-ish pants and the camo cloaks will have some urban-ish camouflage.

I picked the devastators up on ebay on the cheap, so there wasn't a blister included that would allow me to build the fat winged baby robot Armorium Cherub.
Good thing I can use that as an excuse to build my own representation of it and add it to my pledge. So here you go.

Well, that's it for today. I'll paint some of these bad boys up a little more, could be that I can manage to get them done by the end of the week.

I'd love to pledge another unit or two.

Thanks for watching.

Thanks, you guys! I’m making some good progress on the scouts, I’m confident to get them done by the end of the week.

In time too, for I’ve got a little test game coming up on Saturday against the voracious hive fleet kraken! Baal needs reinforcements truly!

I’ll post the lists here soon, might do a battle report of some sort.

Hey folks,

update on my vow - the scouts are finished! Later than expected, obviously, since the game on saturday took a little bit of my time.

So yeah, spent 7 hours at the club yesterday. Not the bouncy-boom-boom one though, the hobby one.

Played 6 objectives from the short table edges, I was set in cover fairly well and the 'Nids got to go first. My first roll before the game: a 1. That would turn out to be the overall theme of the next few turns...

1st turn: my opponent used a stratagem to un-cover a building ruin housing my sniper scouts and tactical squad. So much for camo cloaks!

turn1 (2)

His advance was incredibly fast and menacing, two units of warriors pushing down on one flank, OOE and the three Carnifexes on the other, with a fairly huge piece of LOS-blocking terrain in the middle. Genestealers were the first to advance though, and did so for about 16 inches in total with the Kraken buff and opportunisitic advance being played. The Broodlord was only shortly behind.

The Termagaunts hugged the backfield in two long rows of bugs.

IMG 8219 (3)

Onslaught was cast on the advanced warriors, catalyst went off on the genestealers, me not being in range to deny either with my Libby Dread.

The shooting turned out to be fairly ineffective, but effective enough to strip the Lazorback down to 4 wounds.

No assaults managed to get in.

My first turn:

Captain started on the table next to the Lasback, Devastators and Heavy bolter scout squad. Sangguard and the Ancient in reserves, the DC and characters in the Raven.

Ready to shoot down the Hive Tyrant that had marched up with the warriors, I moved the Stormraven in melta-range and in fron of the genestealers, blocking their way between the terrain and the base of my flier.

Ba turn 1 (4)

The Libby Dread saw an opportunity: being just out of 24" of the broodlord could bring him in a fairly good position for a turn 1 charge on the enemy warlord! So I moved him up, closer to the psychic menace.

Very little other movements were made as I didn't need to get any closer; my opponent was doing that for me.

Psychic phase, failed to cast Quickening (not even in Shadow of the Warp range...just rolled poorly). Since I knew that Wings was the more important power here, I didn't command re-roll at this point. Then attempted to cast Wings, got a 7 with a 5 and a 2, but since my opponent's dice had been on fire from the start, I re-rolled the two and got....a 1! Which my opponent easily blocked. Libby Dread had been a liability since then.

Shooting phase: The Stormraven got around 3-5 wounds with his S8/9, AP3 and Damage 3-D6 on the Hive Tyrant. My opponent made all his 4++ saves. Didn't kill a single stealer because of, again, insane dice rolling with 5++/5+++ against the Hurricane bolters.

Devastators, hit, wounded the Tyrant, both were blocked by the 4++. Lasback: same. Or didn't hit. Or rolled a 1 to wound. Something like that.

Sniper Scouts I'm going to mention here because they failed to roll a single 6 or even 5 against the big creatures of the Hive fleet.

Whirlwind, didn't kill a single stealer, only getting 4 shots and my opponent continueing to roll boxcars all the time.

The heavy bolter scout loaded the hellfire shells into his weapon and let loose...to hit! and caused 2 wounds on the Hive Tyrant! Something that took the rest of my army an entire round of shooting....Anyways, I think the Tyrant went down to 8 wounds.

Oh and by the way, my objectives were: Kill Old One Eye, keep 3 units in my deployment zone after turn 2, but no Tyranids and capture objective no. 5. Which was at the other end of the table, where the gaunts were hugging the backline. Yeah. I kept forgetting to drop them to get new ones, too, so...

Turn 2:

Everything moved ever closer, you know, it's 'Nids.

IMG 8222 (3)

IMG 8225 (2)

Psychic phase: 3 mortal wounds from Psychic Scream and smite from the Neurotrophe on the Stormraven, even with armour of contempt stratagem. Poor rolling on my part...

Shooting phase: Razorback blew up - my Captain, the devs and the scouts in range. I re-rolled, only to get a ....6. Worst of timing. Captain took a single wound, but the devastators were wiped out since they'd taken 2 wounds in the shooting phase already. Scouts only got 1 or two dead.

IMG 8224 (2)

IMG 8222 (3)

I'm going to make it short here:

It was a bitter day for the Sons of the Angel. An enjoyable game it was, but what left a bitter taste in my mouth is the fact that my own dice betrayed me!

Highlights: DC took out the Broodlord after disembarking from the SR, Captain killed the Hive Tyrant turn 2 I think. DC charged a big unit of warriors after killing one in the shooting phase, but my inability to roll 4+/5+++ saw them loosing too many models in the fight against the synapse creatures. They were shot and charged off the table.

Man of the Match: gotta give it to the Heavy bolter scout. That dude plinked off 4-5 wounds on the Hive Tyrant all by himself, and off some warriors as well!

Poor dogs: Tacticals, poor guys got charged by Stealers and were wiped. Everything was wiped, kinda, but they suffered a turn 2 charge deep in my deployment zone and got overrun.

Conclusions: Get new dice, and tinker with some lists. I like the DC with chaplain and priest, they really go to town. Paint up and magnetise another power fist for them, as well as the jump packs I've had lying arounds for ages. And Lemartes.

Sangguard are solid. Even better with a Priest, Ancient and Warlord around. Thinking of making the Ancient the WL to get them their ability all the time so smashy can go get 'em.

Perhaps I'll need a Predator or two. The autocannon is pretty good with flat 3 damage, and lascannon sponsons will certainly help as well in addition to the Devastators.

Thanks for reading.

Will update the Devs soon hopefully. Sleep now.

Thanks guys!

I would’ve loved to paint tonight, but my apartment is hotter than the devils behind entrance.

I’ll have some time tomorrow after my next game, I think. Need to pick up some micro sol and set as well for the decals I’ve put on the scouts and devastators.

Hope to have an update and perhaps a battle report by Sunday.

I got new dice so looking forward to some better rolls!

trick to get best results for decals is:

Gloss varnish the area you want to have the decal on.

once dried, apply a small amount of micro set to the area the decal is going to go.

put decal on and smooth out with something like a damp cotton bud.

put micro sol on the decal.

varnish with gloss again

Good run down of the procedure, thanks mate!

Since the decals on the scouts have already been applied, I'll just give them a brush of micro sol or two and then varnish with gloss, before varnishing again with matte varnish.

I'll try to refrain from buying the q-tip cotton buds though, those and straws are horrible and will probably end up trashing the oceans. Is environmental awareness a thing in the grim dark future of 41k?

Yeah I actually use a brush usually, it doesn't work QUITE as well but is still decent. Most tutorials recommend cotton buds though. :)

I'm afraid that Exterminatus-happiness is dulling it out a bit.

I do remember that in 'Master od Mankind' there was a gal who was executed for stealing the remains of Old Earth oceans. So in M30, Emps was at least making some effort.

That was pretty good advice, Blindhamster. The solution agent worked its magic and the decals look a a lot better. Probably shouldn’t have varnished them over first, but hey.

Yeah right?

Big E, looking out for his fellow humankind, such a nice touch!

Anyways, just got my rear armour handed to me, I called the game after turn 1 with my warlord slain, both my devastator squads either having fallen back or being wiped and the annihilator also having fallen back.

His list had 2 flyrants, the swarmlord and another hive tyrant. We played frontal assault and he got to go first. 23” move of the flyrant with advance (kraken) right in my face. Then doubled down with the swarm lord and game over basically.

I’ll stick to painting for now. :D

Hey folks, just some quick shots of the finished devastators from the ETL. This will be the direction I'm going for with the bases from now on. Perhaps I'll bring the scouts up to speed as well, but we'll see.

Predator finished! Part 1 of my second vow.

A bit disturbed by the way the varnish turned out, it's a bit too shiny for my liking. It's a satin matt varnish, but that's still a bit too much "satin" for me.

Predator Annihilator

side

back

Started on the Terminators, doing the bases separately first to avoid messing up the rather clean armour. Did a heavy shade of Reikland Flesh over the Pure Red armour and started edge highlights of Wild Rider Red. Will follow up with another edge highlight of Troll Slayer Orange.

Will update soon I hope!

I declare my second vow of the ETL complete!

Squad Gideon, in glorious resplendence, has assembled once more to purge the galaxy and the Imperium from the most horrible threats the Blood Angels could face. And with shock assault, they will do so a bit more reliably. Just gotta figure out the delivery system...

Squad Gideon

The big G himself

Terminator

sweet blood drop

you what?

all the rage, all the time

Painting these guys has been a lot of fun, however you won't believe how many details there are on these miniatures. You think you're through, and then you realize theres another 8 or so gems you missed.

My next post-ETL projects are to bring my Sanguinary Guard up to 9 painted members(currently 4), to increase my DC by another 5 and fix the ones that are broken in the existing squad and to assemble and paint a squad of 10 VAS.

Here's the load-out for the VAS squad:

10 VAS - 226 points

JP

TH+SS on Sarge

3x CS+SS dudes

3x Axe+SS dudes

1x PF + SS dude

2x double chainsword dudes

I'll magnetize some arms for certain to be able to adapt to my list-building needs.

Thanks for watching and stay tuned!

Thanks guys! Can’t wait to drop them into Abbadon’s face and wipe the floor with it! Casually painting up some Sanguinary Guard at the moment, no stress though. Might have a progress picture up here by the weekend.

I’ve also ordered the bits for a 10 man VAS as written above; since I have the Vanguard kit, all I needed was the ASM kit, some extra weapons and shields and 5 of the base-decorations that come with it for the full squad. SG first though. :)

Hey folks, another battle report today from yesterday's game against the guy I've mostly been playing(and losing decisively) against. He's a very experienced player and rolls box cars a lot of the times, which doesn't help.

So without further ado, let's start!

2000 points, CA2018, Eternal War

Blood Angels vs. CSM (Main Salamanders + RG battallion)

Mission: Aerial Supply (moving objectives and FLY keyword units get super ObSec)

Deployment: Spearhead assault (short table edges)

Lists

Blood Angels

9 CP - 2000 points

Battalion

JP Libby (Shield, Unleash Rage)

Sang Priest (JP, Psword)

Scouts w/ knives

Scouts w/bolters + HB

Tacticals (7 incl. Sarge stormbolter+PW and Heavy flamer)

Predator, SB, quadruple las

Stormraven, HB, twin las and melta

Vanguard

Lemartes

Libby Dread, Melta, Wings, Quickening)

10 DC, JP, 3 swords, 1 axe, 1 PF

Sanguinary Ancient, Warlord, SoS, Artisan of War

8 Sang Guard, all swords and 1 PF

Assault Terminators TH+SS

Space Marines

11 CP - 2000 points

Battalion

Salamanders

Chaplain, Warlord, Anvil of Strength, Benediction of Fury relic, Litany and Canticle of hate

Chaplain Ven. Dread, Hero of the chapter (-1 CP), 2x heavy flamers

10 Veteran intercessors bolt rifles, Sarge with TH (-2 CP)

Tac Squad with lascannon

Tac Squad with lascannon

2 Vindicators

1 Whirlwind(S6 ammo)

Vanguard Detachment

Salamanders

Techmarine, Servo harness

Apothecary, CS

Relic contemptor Dreadnought with MM

10 Sternguard, just boltguns

Battalion

Raven Guard

Phobos Captain, MC instigator bolt carbine

Phobos Libby

3x Infiltrators

Eliminators, bolt sniper rifles

So as you can see, his list had a lot more models than mine despite a lot of primaris units. I felt disadvantaged already...

But I won the roll to start deploying, meaning that I would also go first unless he seized the initiative.

This is how I deployed:

Turn1 BA DP

Turn 1 BA DP

Turn 1 BA sideview DP

Left flank saw the Pred, Lemartes, Scouts, Libby Dread and the Stormraven form a fast strike-force, ready to plunge into enemy lines and decimate.

The right flank basically did the same, with the Tactical marines sitting right on the objective. The Librarian was in the middle, hiding from the Eliminators in case of a sneaky seize.

Me deploying first meant that I could push the scouts forward in an aggressive manner, denying his infiltrators a zone for deepstrikers as well as a first-turn charge on my expensive stuff. I also didn't have any deepstrikers this time around, so...

Here's the counter-deployment by the Space Marines.

Turn 1 Sallies DP2

Turn 1 Sallies DP

Those vindicators sure look scary. So my opponent rolled for the seize and got....a 4. The Emperor favoured his favourite legion today! :tongue.:

And before I could do anything, the members of the Death Company had already been gripped by haunting visions of their last fight on the Vengeful Spirit and rolled a 6 for their advance with Forlorn Fury. Bloodshed was inevitable as they headed straight for the enemy lines, howling like raging madmen for death and vengeance.

The Blood Angels set out in true 9th Legion fashion and left the opponents no time for reprieve.

Turn 1 - Blood Angels

Turn 1 BA after MV 3

Turn 1 BA after MV 4

The Stormraven went full speed across the battlefield; my intent to block the vindicators fell short by 5 inches, but in perfect striking position nontheless. Remember there's terminators on board.

The Predator also advanced to get vision on the Dreadnought, but he couldn't see the vindicators.

Scouts went for the left objective, which hadn't moved, and the Librarian Dreadnought also went straight ahead to face the infiltrators that had snuck up outside of 9" of the scouts.

The knife scouts went behind the DC in their first turn to lend assistance.

Lemartes, ever the guardian, descended on the battlefield upon wings of fire to lead the Death Company again to glorious victory, staying inside that crucial 6" bubble for their charge roll. Not that it was needed. :whistling:

Sanguinary Guard, Sanguinary Priest, Warlord and Librarian advanced and only rolled a 1 for the squad, so I decided to move 12" forward and shuffle a bit.

In the psychic phase, two crucial powers went off on the SG, giving them +1 attack and more importantly, a 5++ save against the AP4 vindicators, lascannons and the like. The Librarian Dreadnought on the other flank also winged it towards the infiltrators.

Turn 1 BA after MV.2

Not receiving the most spectacular rolls in the shooting phase, the stormraven managed to bracket one of the vindicators and damage the Relic contemptor, which the Predator also did, taking it down to 3 or 4 wounds.

The Death Company then charged the Sternguard. In the pictures above, you can see a fine green-ish line in the ruins fairly centered...

This was after the Blood Angels tore through it.

Turn 1 BA after MV

Also, Lemartes and the scouts both charged the Relic Contemptor to take him out of the fight, and the DC tagged the infiltrators outside of the building hugging the base of the terrain piece and the Phobos Librarian, which was brought down to 1 wound! Powerfists for the win. :smile.:

So first strike for sure picked up here.

The Space marines responded..

Turn 1 - Space Marines

Surprisingly little movement, a bit of shuffling around, but all the guns were in range. So, straight to psychic they went.

Mind something went off on Lemartes, but the Dreadnought was in range to deny, which he did. The other power failed on a 3!

In the shooting phase, 2 wounds were put on the Stormraven, some assault bolters plinked off the Death Company to no effect, and the Intercessors and vindicators managed to kill 5 Sanguinary Guard. Ouch! My opponent's dice were hot, and mine failed me in the darkest hour. They were okay for the rest of the game though, so I guess that evens it out!

So, there were no charges yet by my opponent other than the Intercessors, which failed their 9" charge by rolling a 7, and re-rolling to a 6 with the help of a command point. Phew!

Turn 2 - Blood Angels

First points for the objectives were picked up. 2 for me straight away with the scouts, tacticals and DC which had fallen back to claim the objective in the middle of the fighting in case the Sanguinary Guard were wiped in combat. Having the Fly keyword and all...

Terminators exited the Stormraven, ready for a charge on the command structure of the enemy.

The Sanguinary Guard (the three guys left, that is) moved up, followed by the heroes of the chapter close by. The Librarian Dreadnought moved closer to the objective that my opponent was holding, ready to take it from them with fists of fury. And a halberd, I guess.

Turn 2 BA objective

The pictures are getting a bit less conclusive, but here's what happened next.

Wings and Quickening went off on the Dreadnought, the other Librarian tried to unleash rage on the Terminators and shield the Sanguinary Guard, but both either failed or got denied.

Shooting phase saw the Stormraven executing the Phobos Libby with Hurricane Bolters(as he was the closest model), and only dent one of the vindicators down to 5-ish wounds, while the predator destroyed the other one that was wounded already. Didn't explode. Spoiler Alert!!

Nothing exploded the whole game. :dry.:

Turn 2 BA after MV

The Terminators then charged the Veteran Intercessors which caused 5 wounds, of which I only failed one, so one Terminator down to 1 wound remaining.

The charge went off and also tagged the Chaplain Dreadnought as well; the techmarine and Warlord Chaplain heroically intervened. The Sanguinary Guard went in afterwards; in their bad shape, I couldn't risk losing more models. Every one of my charges went off!

Intercessors interrupted after the terminators attacked and went for the Sanguinary Guard.

After all attacks were made, this is how that looked:

Turn 2 BA after combat 2

Turn 2 BA after combat

Terminators only lost one further model, while my warlord took 2 wounds from the Intercessor Sergeant with the Thunder hammer. A mix of bad hit- and wound rolls by my opponent and insane luck with the armour and 5+++ saved me there.

With the center of the boad fairly much cleared from enemy forces, we went into the 2nd turn.

Turn 2 - Space Marines

A bit on the backfoot, the Space Marines had to retaliate in order to turn this game around. There were still objectives to hold, but in all honesty, the Blood Angels with their Fly keyword units had a distinct advantage.

The Infiltrators and the Raven Guard Captain moved in on the field of carnage that was around the center objective. With no psychic phase, we went straight to shooting.

The DC held everything (mostly bolt rounds) that was shot at them, they were undone by the flamers and other high-ap guns though and released from their service to Emperor and Primarch.

The Eliminators managed to shoot my warlord with the mortis rounds. Bad tidings. The Phobos Captain shot my Librarian. Even worse.

In the charge phase, the Infiltrators and the Captain, the units of 3 and 4 that were in range at least, charged my Sanguinary Guard and managed to take down 2!! The Contempor Dreadnought joined the fray as well, but he got crucially wounded by a powerfist.

Oh, one suicidal Infiltrator charged the Predator after being fed up with the scouts getting the objective points for the last turns and ate 2 lascannons from overwatch. Yeah.

Fighting got desperate as both Chaplain Dreadnought and the Techmarine only killed 2 Terminators instead of all of them. My opponent got all attacks into wounds, but I got hot rolls on those Stormshields, failing 2 out of like 10! There was only the Seargent left though. The retaliation saw the Chaplain Dreadnought destroyed! The Warlord had fallen back earlier this turn, so got out of harms way.

There wasn't much left...

Turn 3 - Blood Angels

The Stormraven went into hover mode to assist in the fight for central ground. The Librarian Dreadnought had been claiming the Objective on the left thanks to the FLY keyword granted by Wings of Sanguinius, and overall, the Blood Angels controlled 3 objectives, while the one in the center was contested and didn't gave up any points.

The Sanguinary Priest fell back from the Infiltrators and revived one Terminator that had kicked it earlier.

The Librarian Dreadnought moved into melta range of the Whirlwind, still in 3" of the objective.

In the psychic phase, Smite went off and caused a wound on the WW.

Meltagun missed from the Dread, but the Predator had moved into position to see the Vindicator and killed it.

Hurricane-Boltered the warlord and took 2 wounds down!

charges, it looked a little like this:

Turn 3 BA after movement

I'll cut a long story short here, because after the 3rd turn of the Salamanders, the Blood Angels were already in the lead by 4 points, and my opponent had no means to contest any of the remaining ones.

Turn 3 Sallies after combat

Just one more picture because it looks pretty cool. :smile.: That is after my turn 4.

Turn 4 BA after combat

Oh, the Libby Dread melta'd the Apothecary on the 6th turn. Glorious.

The game went on for 1 more turn after that, and in the 6th turn, it ended with a 11-3 victory for the Blood Angels!

Overall, a great game because I got to use my army for once, usually this very same opponent blasts it to shreds on his first turn, which he usually gets with impunity. His list obviously wasn't optimized at all, he was testing out some stuff with the new codex. Furthermore, he forgot that he'd kicked out his drop pod in favor of other stuff, which meant the Sternguard were sitting ducks and footslogging it.
