Question for hitting 1s

I have ran into someone at a Tournament that said that even if you have a +1 to hitting a 1 still makes you die when overcharging with plasma weapons.

And in the rules it does say that for Hit Rolls; A roll of a 1 always 'fails', irrespective of any modifiers that may apply.

Which does mean that the 1 would not hit even if you were hitting on 2s.

But to me that still does mean that 1 did become a 2 and did not die to overcharging but it did not get a hit.

Can someone please help me with this rule?

A Natural 1 to hit misses. (as per the rule book)

Some plasma will kill the firer on a natural 1 others just say a 1 to hit...

Q: When making a hit roll with a supercharged plasma weapon, do you determine whether a ‘1’ was rolled before or after applying re-rolls and modifiers?

A: You apply all re-rolls and modifiers first.

this is from main rulebook FAQ (April '19 version) pg 4

No like what i am saying, if you have +1 to hit and land on a 1 does that 'failed' to hit 1 get the +1 still, like yes it is a failed hit but is it counted as a 1 for the overcharge exploding?

It's not. As Tyriks already said they are two different things and as Slasher956 quoted you check for overcharge after applying re-rolls and modifier.

You roll a 1, don't have any re-rolls so that means the shot misses. However you have a +1 to hit modifier which turns the 1 into a 2 which still misses but at least doesn't trigger the overcharge rule anymore.

To put this in to steps...

You roll 1 so re-roll..it comes up 1 again.

You then get to modifier the result with your +1, to make it a two. (Rule book FAQ pg 3, re-rolls before modifiers)

Next you see if you hit... but you dont even with BS 2+ due to it being a natural 1*, (Rulebook pg 181)

Then you see if you explode ... no because you are at a dice score of a 2, and the weapon rule states about the to hit roll being a 1.

*Sorry I (& others) use the term a natural 1 which is the same as GWs wording 'an unmodified roll of a 1'

... and the not Official Rules discussion ends here, thank you.

(D&D is not something that should be discussed here.)
