Defeat in Victory: Blood Angels vs. Necrons 750pts.

Recommended Posts

About 15 minutes before posting, I finished a short, friendly (well, not all that friendly, we'll get to that) game with That Guy at my FLGS. Now, he's not all that much of a That Guy, but he likes to bend the rules to his benefit and give outright incorrect interpretations of the rules (for example, he thinks you can't run a Detachment containing both, say, Ulthwé and Iyanden models battle-forged off of the Asuryani keyword because he thinks they'd lose their Craftworld keyword, but that's a discussion for another day) but I play with him regularly because I have really nobody else to play with.

Note: his list is an approximation. He was supposedly at 759 (being a bit over is something we both regularly let slide) but I can't figure it out at anything but 744.

The forces were:

My opponent:

= NECRONS, 750 pts. category =

41 PL, 744 pts.

= PATROL DETACHMENT =

= HQ =

Necron Overlord w/Voidscythe (Voidreaper artifact), Warlord: 104 pts., 6 PL

= TROOPS =

Necron Warriors x10: 110 pts., 6 PL

Necron Warriors x10: 110 pts., 6 PL

= AIR WING DETACHMENT =

= FLYERS =

Doom Scythe: 11 PL, 150 pts.

Night Scythe: 8 PL, 135 pts.

Night Scythe: 8 PL, 135 pts.

Me:

= BLOOD ANGELS, 750 pts. category =

40 PL, 745 pts.

-1 CP for Death Visions on Captain Smash

= BATTALION DETACHMENT =

= HQ =

Captain Smash w/Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield, Bolt Pistol, Jump Pack (The Angel's Wing), Gift of Foresight: 6 PL, 124 pts.

Lieutenant w/Power Sword, Plasma Pistol: 4 PL, 69 pts.

= TROOPS =

Intercessors x5 w/Chainsword x1, Bolt Rifle x5: 5 PL, 85 pts.

Intercessors x5 w/Chainsword x1, Bolt Rifle x5: 5 PL, 85 pts.

Intercessors x5 w/Chainsword x1, Bolt Rifle x5: 5 PL, 85 pts.

= ELITES =

Dreadnought w/Dreadnought Fist, Storm Bolter, Twin Lascannon: 7 PL, 132 pts.

Hellblasters w/Plasma Incinerators x5: 8 PL, 165 pts.

The battle went for 6 full turns, we didn't discuss any victory conditions, nor a turn limit beforehand (a mistake). He flew his planes around me and had them wrecked one by one by Captain Smash. Things died, a plane exploded and exploded my Dreadnought, and my Captain was responsible for wrecking all three planes. He had his Warriors and Overlord parked in his planes, and emergency-dropped the Overlord when I wrecked his last plane. He then proceeded to duel my Smash and lose. In the end of the game, he had two Warriors left on the field; I had a full unit of Intercessors and my Captain left on the field. It was then that we called it. Then he contested my victory on the grounds that it was units destroyed; despite how good I'd been doing, despite the fact that it was only my second victory against his rule-bending, cheap-list-building self... he claimed it was a tie.

Really their list should have been 733 since there's no real reason to pay for a voidscythe when the relic replaces either that or a warscythe, which is 11 points less.

Being a player of both these armies, they brought a drawer full of spoons to a knife fight though. Smashy loves crippling everything with FLY and Scythes of all types fail under even mediocre duress in my experience.

Were you playing with objectives of any kind? Typically when there are no objectives to hold units destroyed are what the tally of victory points come from, but with units remaining at the end you should have just played the 7th turn and tabled them. It would have taken as long as rolling a handful of dice shooting
