You can't spell slaughter without laughter....

Welcome one and all to my first painting log, the Renegade Astartes of the Crimson Slaughter. I started on this army with the 6th ed release of the dark vengeance set, however it soon fell by the wayside as my interest in GW stuff waned due to a combination of them killing Warhammer Fantasy and me getting more into competitive X Wing and Imperial Assault. I lurked both here and on warseer for quite a while, getting into my "creative" side of the hobby vicariously through the many talented painters and converters on these sites. Recently my interest in competitive gaming has fallen off (tho I still enjoy those games) and the hobby itch has returned. So i figured the release of the contrast paint range coinciding with the ETL was a great time for me to jump back in. But enough of a rambling intro, everyone wants to see models right?

Lets start off with what I have found so far from the original project:

Chaos Marines. These guys have be debased as they were on 25s at the time and need an update, however they are so much smaller than the newer models I may just want to replace them entirely.

WIP Kranon the Relentless. This will be the first thing I tackle after the ETL is over, I'm very happy with the banner addition to his backpack.

WIP Sorcerer. Nothing too special here.

And now for the stuff you've probably seen in the ETL thread, I will take some more pics of these when I finish my current vow.

Thanks Doom.

Finished off all the armour on the knight, just the arms left to go then 3rd vow is complete.

Also whipped up a Dark Apostle from the Dark Vengeance chaplain and bits from the CSM and Warshrine kits. The 2 cultist champions will be his followers, not sure how they will be converted yet.

Reports from the few horrified survivors of the Crimson Slaughter's raids speak of a towering monstrosity, a Knight Titan of ancient design, its pilot a long dead skeletal husk still fused within his cockpit. Some even report this fiend literally clawing its way up from beneath the earth, like a zombie rising from the grave, to reap untold havoc upon all who cross its path before vanishing as mysteriously as it had appeared.

I give you, the Bone Knight.

I'm still not 100% happy with the final bone colour, the top carapace and shoulder guards are a bit lighter than the lower areas. I could give them another diluted coat of skeleton horde but I think I'm just going to leave it for now and move on to other things.

Been doing some work on Kranon along side my ETL Vows, just got to finish his pack and touch up the horns again (spilt some yellow on there doing some of the piping just now)

Also made this base for him, not sure if I'm fully keen on the spirits just yet - will have to see how he looks on it once he dries up.

What do people think?

Thanks for the comments guys. Kranon is now pretty much done, still have to decide if I'm going to paint something on the banner or try one of the Crimson Slaughter transfers from the old csm sheet. Heres a few picks of him on his base, just set there no glue at the moment.

Base looks better than I originally thought so I think I will go with it. The next question will be how widespread across the army should the spirits be? Currently I'm thinking just major characters and larger centerpiece type models like vehicles, but I'd be keen to see what other people think.

You could just give the spirits to things with invulnerable saves - fluffing the saves as being protected by the spirits.  Otherwise, yeah, reserve them for models with 4+ wounds or with 40mm+ footprints, which would be characters, spawn and vehicles.

Krannon looks great! I would definitely do spirits on the characters. For modeling purposes and with new base sizes, it might be worth moving your characters, like Vrosh, on to bigger bases to fit the spirits in. If you can manage, a couple spirits scattered here and there would look good too.

Cheers guys. I think I will judge the spirits on a case by case basis and use them on models which either have a bit of extra room on their base or seem like they are missing something.

Going to be a bit quite here for the next week as we have our first System Open for X Wing coming up this weekend. Its going to be not only Australia's biggest X Wing event but also the Southern hemisphere's I believe so Ive got some last minute practice to get in. After that I'll be needing a competitive break and am planning to get really stuck into this project and perhaps some other 40k stuff.

Not a lot of hobby time this so far this month unfortunately, I did manage to get the melee squad's aspiring champion finished (no photos taken yet) and slap a rough basecoat on the chaincannoners but i think the 2 csm squads are going on the backburner for a bit.

I've made a small vow for CoC, 2 greater possessed and a fabius bile conversion which should be fun to do. I've also decided to start a very rusty Iron Hands force, 2 photos of the test model below (1 with flash 1 without).

Nice! I got that Chaos Lord with the plasma pistol as an eBay rescue, sprayed in Death Guard Green with some bronze paint slapped onto it. After I Simple Green it, this has inspired me to paint him as one of the Crimson Slaughter!  Those cultists are excellent, what models are those based on? Look very different to the stock GW Cultist boxes I've got. Sorry if that's a dumb question, but I'm recently back in the hobby after two decades away - last game of 40K I played was 3rd Edition!

At least two of the close combat poses are what is included in the current Cultists box (and which I find quite boring, to be honest). All the much more interesting poses, the heavy, and the champion are all OOP now and going for absurd prices on eBay. So much for that ... I already spent an ungodly sum on a pile of Forge World Renegade Militia (which I will use as Cultists in a CSM/DG army eventually). Looks like I will be converting Cadians with "plague doctor" heads from some 3D printing shop and maybe autogun arms. Definitely wanting at least 1 squad of Beastmen/Tzaangor for my Cultists/Militia, too. One of my prized possessions back in the late 90s was an "Imperial Beastman". So much Rogue Trader stuff I will never be able to get back now. So it goes! Thanks for telling me about Dark Vengeance! I will keep my eyes peeled for a dusty box on a shop shelf somewhere!
