Spaced Hulk's Sons of Dorn

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of building a kill team or maybe a small army of my favourite Badab War Chapter, the Executioners. I've painted this test model, and am looking for some feedback on the colour scheme:

I'm aiming for a dark metallic steel with a very slight blue-ish hue (don't want it too blue, as I also have a Crimson Fists project ongoing as well). Is it still identifiable as an Executioner? Thanks in advance!

Cheers for the feedback. I'm actually really pleased with the scheme, but wanted to make sure it was still recognisable as an Executioner.

No Contrast paints were used, just old fashioned shade washes. Recipe is:

Black undercoat.

Leadbelcher spray, tidied up with Leadbelcher base.

A heavy wash of Army Painter Dark Tone.

Edge highlights of Stormhost Silver.

A final wash of Drakenhof Nightshade.

The test model looks good Spaced Hulk. If I may make a recommendation though, while working on an Alpha Legion model for a friend, I had an idea that might help you here:

Basically, if you use the 'new' Iron Warriors paint (the darkest silver paint) and wash it with Nuln Oil Gloss, you could possibly use Calth Blue Clear over it to get the Executioners' metallic blue scheme, but much darker.

Cheers brothers  To be honest, I'm pretty happy with the scheme as it is. Like I said earlier, I deliberately don't want it to look too blue, as I have a Crimson Fists project ongoing as well. I was also really inspired by Lord Valraks Executioners, which aren't blue at all (just gun metal).

I've ordered some decals with the Executioners chapter symbol from Fallout Hobbies. They're coming from the States (I'm in the UK) so should hopefully arrive within the next few weeks.

I've also basecoated the Intercessor Sergeant (I must admit, I'm loving GWs Leadbelcher spray) so I can crack on with the details now:

@ Marshal Rohr: Apologies for the very late reply. Army Painter Quickshades are ink washes like Citadel Shades, rather than Contrast paints. I do actually prefer Army Painter Dark Tone to Nuln Oil, as it creates similar results to the old Badab Black Wash.

Another update to the glacial progress on this army. Here's a converted Primaris Lieutenant for the Executioners. The axe will have to count as a power sword until GW increases access to the armoury:

Cheers guys, appreciate the feedback! ☺

Bit of progress on the painting front. The Sergeant is base coated and shaded, just need to highlight then add the blue tint to the armour:

I've also received my chapter transfers from Chapter Customizer:

Really nice transfers and great service, so I recommend them to anyone building one of the named Successor Chapters. These Executioners ones do appear a bit faded once applied (at least compared to GW ones) but I actually quite like that look, as it matches the battle worn look I'd like the finished army to have. And I can always brighten them up by brush if I feel they need it.

Finally I've been trying to decide on a basing method for the army. I usually use an urban rubble/rocky plateau for my 40k bases, and for consistency I'd like the Executioners to be same.

However, I'm thinking it might look a bit too similar to the colour of the power armour, so I'm considering adding another contrasting colour as well. Either some tufts of dead grass, or possibly some snow effects using GWs technical paint (I think it's called Valhallan Blizzard?)

Thanks guys ☺

@ QuarterPounder: I'm thinking maybe small clumps of snow, as though it's either just starting to collect or in the process of melting. Just spot colours really, rather than a complete snowy base, so hopefully it wouldn't draw too much attention away from the model.

Probably going to try the static grass first, as I already have that, whilst I'll have to buy the technical paint.

Another update, this time a WIP Deathspeaker Chaplain:

For anybody unfamiliar with the Executioners lore, Deathspeaker Chaplains are pretty important in the chapter, as they keep a tally of the kills and notable deeds of their brothers, record every battle fought (wins and losses) for future reference and try to stop their fellow Executioners killing each other when tempers rise. Each company traditionally has three Deathspeakers, so I definitely wanted to include at least one or two in the army. Fortunately, Chaplains are much better in the new Codex!
