Converting Primaris

Firenze

Recommended Posts

So, I am planning on a small Primaris force to add as a side army for my Badab War Raptors (yes I know about the timeline stuff, its purely for choices), and I would like to add models such as Infiltrators and Reivers, however I absolutely hate the shin guards they have on the phobos pattern armour. How easy would it be to convert the Phobos armour to use the Intercessor legs? And is it possible to put the regular shoulder pads on the Phobos pattern arms?

It shouldn't be too hard. The hardest part would be cutting both torsos at the waist to get the Reivers to fit onto Intercessor legs.

And yes, it's possible to put regular shoulder pads on Reiver shoulders. Though it might take some filing for the right shoulder to fit a normal pad onto it

Do you really hate the phobos legs so much that you're willing to pay twice as much money for a squad?

Hey, it's his money, don't knock him if he prefers a different aesthetic.

Yeah, looking at the same thing here to make some berzerkers out of the new kits...

On Topic: It shouldn't look too dramatically different to use Reiver arms and heads on intercessors.  I admit to being "meh" about the Phobos pattern lower legs too, but I figured I would give them a shot.

If your confident enough with greenstuff or other sculpting clay of your choice, you could also try filling in and overlapping the grieves over the upper part of the sabatons.

I'm not knocking anyone, seriously. I know a number of people who really dislike the leg armor of the phobos marines and luckily I'm not one of them because if it bothered me that much I would want to change it as well. The difference, from my perspective is, that with my sculpting skills it would be a relatively easy fix and the price for me to change it would be on the low end and therefore a much easier decision to make. If it wasn't going to be an easy fix for me, I probably wouldn't bother with leg swaps simply because I think GWs prices are already outrageous and paying $120 US for 10 marines in Phobos armor is a decision I don't even have to consider - not gonna happen.

I was honestly curious if it would be worth the price and and effort.

*SNIP* How easy would it be to convert the Phobos armour to use the Intercessor legs? And is it possible to put the regular shoulder pads on the Phobos pattern arms?

Good news – it can be almost trivially easy. The simplest approach is a simple kitbash of putting the appropriate arms, head and backpack on an Intercessor/Hellblaster, as on this Astral Claw:

The only actual conversion work is trimming down the marine's right shoulder on the Phobos armour (this arm has an inbuilt mini-pauldron) so that a 'normal' pad will fit. Alternatively, you can trim the shoulder off entirely and replace it with one from an Intercessor (or any other marine, in fact).

If you want to retain the Phobos torso, you could try swapping out the legs. There may be a little more work involved here, but nothing too terrible. While I haven't tried it, I'm also fairly confident that the Phobos torso front will fit the Tacticus torso back with minimal effort.

In terms of pricing, eBay and second-hand stores make buying the requisite components roughly comparable to a box of marines new from GW, so it's not a terrible expense.
