Primaris-Only Chapter Color Scheme Feedback

Recommended Posts

So, I've decided to start a Primaris Space Marine homebrew chapter. Thing is, I have 2 color schemes that have made the cut from the several others in mind. Tell me what you think, from a top-down tabletop appearance perspective, which would look the best.

1. The Void Sentinels Chapter, Iron Hands successor

Dark Purple, Clean White, Copper; This chapter comes from the lineage of Ferrus Manus, and their proclivity for technology is very prevalent. They are based on Rubidax, an iron-rich red moon orbiting a gas giant. The chapter's fortress-monastery is The Vigil which is a vertical keep built into a mountainside. The Vigil is crowned by the chapter's Orrery. The Orrery is a void-shielded chamber with an advanced spherical star chart, where the leadership of the chapter convene to determine where to launch their campaigns against the forces of Chaos and respond to Xenos raids. Given their defensive nature along the Cicatrix Maledictum, the chapter has learned to be pro-active in it's campaigns against the Imperium's enemies.

2. The Crimson Tears Chapter, Blood Angels successor

Cream, Red, Gold & Black; It's not on this example, but there are 1+ red tear-drops on the helmets and rank is determined by the number of them. The chapter seeks to prove itself as worthy inheritors of Sanguinius. Their initiation ritual is a psycho-chemical injection, overseen by an Apothecary (Sanguinary Priest) and a Chaplain, that forces them to experience the Black Rage once in their lives and upon successfully enduring the ritual, they cry tears of blood from ruptured tear ducts. They must endure this again if they choose to accept promotion to Lieutenant, in which case they are given a blood drop reliquary symbolizing their ascension. Their colors are inspired by those worn by the Blood Angels Sanguinary Priests.

So what do you think?

This isn't really about the colour scheme, but on the little bits of background you gave: I also prefer the Void Sentinels. Iron Hands based successors feel like a richer background for going your own way (where as blood angels bring a bunch of baggage that we've seen a lot elsewhere - though the bleeding eyes a "nice" touch...).

I actually like both colour schemes - sorry, no help there :biggrin.:

I like the Void Sentinels background and name better. The scheme is good, but it's very pre-Heresy Emperor's Children. Maybe shift the purple a little toward the blue to look a bit more void-like. Bonus points if you can get the occasional deep space effect on the occasional shoulder pad.

At least you've bothered to reply at all. Only 2 people have done so. :sad.:

Here's the color scheme I wanted to use the most, but it's been used elsewhere ---twice---- before. Imperial Fists Legion Templars (1st company) + Iron Talons (White Scars successor), not to mention shares the colors with Scythes of the Emperor.

This one has background too of course, but I don't want people to say "oh look, it's 'that chapter' isn't it?" rather than "oh, that's HIS chapter." I know that many chapters use similar color schemes but I dunno :\

My post above was the "original" scheme for my Void Sentinels idea.

What would you like to hear?

The problem is, you hace 2 color shemes that have been used for some official stuff. I think cream armour and red robes have been a dark Angel successor or something like that and are inverted Blood Ravens Chapter colors.

Maybe get a color wheel and try some color triads for Space Marine armours.

I also had another one but it's been used before. And now I've discovered that the purple and white one has been used before too. :sad.:

It doesn't matter that a scheme has been used before. GW lore provides one example of two Chapters using the exact same livery and name, and there are plenty of Chapters with very similar livery.

And if a scheme has been used before by someone in their DIY, you shouldn't worry about that at all.

There are only so many colors and combinations, so there are bound to be Chapters that have similarities in their appearance. Pick whatever works for you and ignore what anyone else has done.

Personally, I like both schemes.

I like the second one, if you can stomach painting white armour! Any chapter symbol for them?

It's actually cream colored. Basically, look at the official GW model for a Sanguinary Priest. The chapter's heraldry originally was different until they changed it in honor of the ritual they undergo. The pauldrons are simply blood-red, the chapter's distinguishing feature are the 1 - 2 blood drop tears on the helmets. Status is measured by the number of teardrops on the helmet, one for each time they undergo the ritual. The squad type / affiliation is determined by the color of the power core on the marine's backpack. Blue for Fire Support units, Yellow for Assault units, Gold for HQ and Honorsworn units.

I'd like to hear "do this scheme because x reason" basically :P

I tried using inspiration from other sources but really all the schemes that A. I can do, and B. I like to do, are used up. I like all colors really, the trick for me is basically trying not to look garish and making a more believable scheme. The Imperium isn't into neon colors after all.

Thank you for commenting on my thread Brother Tyler, it means a lot to me to have your advice. I do know that chapters can and have used similar livery, it's just a compulsion to feel different that I get hung up on I guess. Maybe I should suppress that feeling. :P

Like I said in another post above too, I really like the black, yellow and steel color scheme I originally made for the Void Sentinels chapter, but it was used. Maybe I should just go with that one?

Honestly, it's a nice scheme. My only recommendation is figure out a yellow first, then commit to it. Because yellow can be a bit of a :censored: to paint.

I'd basically paint it like Duncan painted the Deathwatch Marine but for the yellow parts I'd base it with Averlund Sunset, shade with Seraphim Sepia, highlight with Yriel Yellow. The black armor would be undercoated in Grey Seer Contrast (for smoothness), base coat with Abaddon Black, edge highlighted with Eshin Grey, extra highlighted with Fenrisian Grey. Steel parts are base coat with Leadbelcher, shaded with Nuln Oil, highlight with Ironbreaker, edge highlight with stormhost silver, and possibly glazed with a thinned blue contrast. Red eyes & lenses, base coat with Khorne Red, highlight with Evil Sunz Scarlet, highlight with Fire Dragon Bright, edge highlight with Yriel Yellow, white dots, gloss varnish.

I'm just not sure about the gun casings. Black, yellow or red?

I have to say, of the 3 I like the black and yellow scheme best - though white, yellow and black are the least forgiving colours! For bolter casings, I'd go with yellow or black. I normally prefer black, but in this case I think it might be a bit too much dull, so yellow would add that extra splash. Red would

a] end up echoing deathwatch/death company somewhat which you'd want to avoid (both being much more well known)

b] risk being a bit garish IMO.

I've not seen any Iron Talons painted at all on instagram/twitter, and I'd certainly never heard of them. And your scheme is different - no silver gauntlet but different pack and of course chapter symbol, so I wouldn't worry about that in the slightest. And Scythes are inverted, so they won't invite comparison (I have seen a few of those)

Painting method sounds solid, just do some test minis and see how it feels - my schemes usually need a bit of tweaking once paint hits plastic! I think you may need to go lighter than averland sunset with yriel edge; one option would be to glaze it to lighten it a bit. This guy shows the difference with a lamenters yellow glaze which I think looks pretty damn nice. Of course, GW have just discontinued that, but thinned vallejo yellow game ink is a drop in replacement.

On the subject of reusing colour schemes, have you considered playing around with altering what armour is painted what colour? Using your black/yellow scheme as an example because you said you mainly changed it because it was already in use, I can think of a few things you could try. One is that there are a thousand different ways up paint black, and maybe combining a couple of your ideas and painting it with very dark purple highlights could give it a different tone than the other schemes, especially if you work it in as a spot colour for lenses and such. Another option is moving away from the traditional shoulder and knee pads coloring and incorporate other pieces of the armour. Go with pseudo halved or quartered armor by making one arm and one leg fully yellow or steel. Heck, do both, with the left arm in steel to call back to their Iron Hands heritage and the right arm and left leg in yellow. The sky's the limit for it really, and you'd be surprised how just a couple of little changes like that can really make two similar schemes look very different.

i like the purple because of how unique it is. to add void, why not add a sparkle/star effect? it might work best on a darker purple as opposed to a bright purple, but it would work on the black scheme as well. maybe there are metallic flakes you can very very lightly add to the main color to add the effect.

alternatively, and i dont know how well it would work tbh, use very very thinned white, place on square and kinda stiff brush. pull the bristles with your fingers, letting them spring back into place and spraying random small spots onto the marine to represent stars. this would be done after shading the main color i think, but before any accent had been applied. it might not work at all though... test on a peice of paper? just an idea to add some void into your sentinels

I like the Void Sentinels. It's unique (not many purple marines), ESPECIALLY for an Iron Hands successor.

Actually I have a feeling IH would first disown them, then shoot them all to death on sight due to a bit unfortunate connotations. Blue would have worked better here :whistling:

I can recommend a Steel, Black and Yellow colour scheme. Its what I have been doing for my Silver Templars.

Something you should keep in mind that that a lot of color schemes have already been used before. There is no rule that color schemes cannot be shared as it is more the chapter badge and the individuals in the chapter that make it different. I say go with what you like the most. But if you really wanted my opinion I would say go with the Void Sentinels. They have a really nice background and a solid scheme.

I've actually chosen a color scheme that wasn't even posted here! :P Thank you though folks for all your support and feedback!

Armor: Basecoat with Balthazar Gold, Overall Shade with Druchii Violet, Overall Highlight with Sycorax Bronze, Edge Highlight with Stormhost Silver

Shoulder Pads, Weapon Casings & Power Core (backpack): Basecoat with Grey Seer, Overall Highlight with White Scar, Recessed Shade with Druchii Violet

Inner Cloth: Basecoat with Naggaroth Night, Overall Shade with Druchii Violet, Overall Highlight with Xereus Purple, Edge Highlight with Genestealer Purple, Overall Glaze of 1:2 mix of Carroburg Crimson and Lahmian Medium.

Outer Cloth: Basecoat with Rakarth Flesh, Overall Shade with Agrax Earthshade, Overall Highlight with Ushabti Bone, Edge Highlight with Pallid Wych Flesh, Overall Glaze of 1:3 mix of Zandri Dust and Lahmian Medium. (This last part is to give it a warmer shade, though suggestions are welcome.)

Symbol: A violet H on the left shoulder pad.

Additional Character Detail: I was thinking of either using Stormhost Silver to add a little bit of decorative filigree to parts of the armor or doing a "greek pattern" in opposing colors on the inner and outer colors of cloth (white on purple, purple on white). Again, suggestions are welcome!

The Lenses I haven't really decided if I want to be red, blue or somehow purple. Purple was my first choice because it goes with the scheme but purple is REALLY difficult to make bright and vibrant because it's a naturally dark color. I then thought about blue but it's kind of lost when put against bronze. Red is logical but boring.

  • 3 weeks later...

I like it, very rich/regal colours. A good purple is difficult to do, like you say, but it'll look good once you've nailed down your technique.

Funny how the process works:

  1. think of design/colours
  2. think a lot more about design
  3. discuss with others
  4. use painter to create pics
  5. think more of design
  6. make tweaks and changes
  7. think more
  8. then go with something completely different...

I did exactly the same thing and I'm sure I'm not the only one
