Emperors Dragons

Chapter Introduction:

The Space Marines are steadfast heroes of the Imperium.  By their martial prowess and valour is Mankind preserved from extinction at the hands of the galaxy filled with unimaginable terrors.  The Emperor’s Dragons are well known for their steadfast belief in the Emperor, and with bolter and chainsword they have been at the forefront of humanity’s defence for over five thousand years.  Yet the Dragons are not liked by many factions of the Imperium, most notably the Ecclesiarchy.  The chapter’s belief differs from the teachings of the Adpetus Ministorum and it is due mainly to the charisma and political skill of the Chapter Master that the Inquisition keeps its distance.

The Dragons are the masters of tactical war, relying heavily on their superior knowledge of all aspects of combat to outsmart and outfight the enemy.  They are as able in the savage arena of close assault as they are making precise premptive strikes to disable enemy forces.

Stormraven gunships roar over the battlefield, bringing fresh troops into the maelstrom.  Assault troops leap majestically from hotzone to hotzone. Tactical squads make their implacable advance, dreadnoughts rend foes in the name of the Lord of Mankind and tanks spur forward to spit death.

To lead a detachment of the Emperor’s Dragons is to control the ebb and flow of battle.

Chapter Founding:

The specific founding of this chapter is uncertain but is believed to have happened during the infamous 13th founding, known as the Dark Founding, which took place in the 36th millennium.  Some believe that the chapter must be seeded from the Salamander’s due to their fascination of humans and their green armour but the organisation of the units also have a touch of Blood Angels to it – truth is no one knows for certain, and those that might, would never speak to an outsider.

Chapter Homeworld:

Segmentum - Pacificus

Sector - Thayl

System – Kapela

Planets –

  • Kapela Unos – irradiated, empty ball of rock, no atmosphere
  • Kapela Secundus - irradiated rock, automated mining facilities
  • Kapela Tertius – semi-frozen world, only populated planet in system
  • Kapela Belt – thought to originally be a planet, but incredible volcanic activity literally tore the surface apart leaving scattered rocks kept in a vague ring around the sun by gravitational influence
  • Kapela Quatuor – highly volcanic, thick poisonous atmosphere, Chapter training world
  • Kapela Quintus – barren due to IMPERIAL RECORDS REDACTED
  • Kapela Sext – stable atmosphere but high volcanic activity makes colonising dangerous, chapter outpost used for training
  • Kapela Septem -  Iceball, uninhabitable, automated mineral refinery
  • Kapela Octo  - Iceball, uninhabitable, automated mining facility

The chapter is based on Kapela Tertius, known locally as Suum.  At some point in the past, before the Adeptus Geologii discovered and mapped the Kapela system, all eight planets were highly volcanic and therefore the whole system is rich with minerals and gemstones.  Suum was the least volcanic of the Kapela planets and had always been the main population centre of the system, however it was home to what seems to be the largest volcano of all eight planets.  Thousands of years ago, before the Chapter arrived there was an eruption of extreme magnitude which tilted the axis of the plant, most of the population were lost as extreme weather pattern ravaged the planet’s surface and the axis tilt altered the climate to be extremely cold and the northern polar icecaps now actually reach down to nearly the equatorial line.  The southern hemisphere is the only inhabited land although due to the axis tilt, it receives a large quantity of sunlight.

The chapterhouse is based out of the way on the northern hemisphere.  It is not to disconnect from the populous, in fact there are several administration and recruiting houses within Sanctity (the Capital city if Suum) but more to ensure the safety of the local populous from training exercises.  Also, although the chapter rules the planet and the Master of Sanctity is a Space Marine, the chapter would still rather the majority of planet administration was dealt with by Suumians.

Oath Worlds:

The Emperor’s Dragons are based on a single world but they watch over, and have forces stationed on, “Oath Worlds” all over the Segmentum Pacificus.  When the Dragons have had dealings with a planet or system governor, they will offer The Emperor’s Oath, this is an agreement that stretches far back to the time before the Horus Heresy, whereby the Emperor would protect human planets in return for a monetary tithe and a supply of manpower.  Although the Imperium continues this ideal, the Chapter believes it has been perverted as much as the teachings of the Emperor.  Therefore they offer their own Oath – The Dragons will install one of their own to help govern the planet (although each governor will watch dozens of worlds) and also each Oath Planet would receive special preference when it requires assistance in the future.  All that they ask in return is donations of manpower, aspirants, aid (food, water and raw materials) and most importantly intelligence.

These Oath Worlds are governed by Oath Governors, a very senior rank with the Chapter and often Oath Governors will be referred to as Lord by the lower echelons of the Chapter.  Each Oath Governor is also a Fleet Captain and spends his time flying through space, patrolling Oath Worlds, collecting and transporting men and materials used in aid missions but also they have the important job of collating the intelligence gathered from each Oath World.

Each fleet will have one or more Librarians attached to it, who will maintain the information that the fleet has accrued and communicate with his psyker brothers in other fleets to trade intelligence.

Fighting Style:

The Chapter is relentless in battle, never abandoning a theatre of war simply because it is not going well; this is especially true while Imperial citizens are at risk.  However, tactical retreats are seen as a requirement of battle and they will not question the order to fall back if it is given, they know that the commanders are simply calculating an alternative route to bring them back into combat but with greater odds of victory.

They are stubborn in defence and relentless in attack, traits that work to almost perfection thanks to the high level of tactical intelligence that the chapter are well known for.  In addition to this, the marines of the chapter are extremely sturdy and their favoured fighting style promoted toughness and the ability to stand in the face of overwhelming odds.  This is built over many years of relentlessly training their bodies on the cold ice fields of Suum building constitution and muscle density.

Due to the chapters preference to cause as little collateral damage as possible, they eschew the use of explosive or ordnance weaponry, preferring to execute their enemies in medium to close combat.  That is not to say that the chapter is at a loss when the enemy is still at long range, they make judicial use of bikes and Land Speeders to engage enemies in lightning fast and precise attacks.  The chapter also has a highly trained force of air vehicles that are used mainly for citizen extraction but can also be loaded up to excel at engaging enemy units from medium to long range.

Chapter Belief:

The chapter has strong beliefs in the original plan of the Emperor, before his internment in the Golden Throne.  They believe that the Emperor’s truth has been twisted and mangled by the Ecclesiarchy to suit their own agendas.  Most notably the belief that the Emperor is a God in some form or another.  The Emperor throughout his life had believed in Human Secularism, extolling the worth of humans exploring and interacting with the universe through actions, thoughts, science and leaned debates instead of believing there is an almighty omnipotent being that lays out the law about how life should be used.

The chapter believes that the Emperor’s plan for the Astartes was to be created for more than just war.  Why else would the Emperor have created the Primarch’s to display great aptitude for learning, understanding and compassion, he could have created beings of pure warfare.  He must have intended for them to reach out to save humanity not only by their weapons but also their minds, to be as empathic to the victims as unrepentant to the aggressors.

With this in mind, the Chapter are humanitarian at their core.  They fight to save the Imperium’s citizens but also work to be role models, mediators, advisors and assist heavily in relief work.  They answer the Imperial call to war if required, for example they have fought most recently during the 13th Black Crusade.  Although they spend the majority of their time defending those who answered the Emperor’s Oath they also work tirelessly to extend their reach across the Segemtum bringing the protection of the Emperor to His subjects.

Chapter Secret:

Every chapter has a secret and the Emperor’s Dragons are no different in this respect.  Hidden deep within a vault on Kapella Septus lays a badly damaged Contemptor-class dreadnought – originally found by the chapter during a raid on a Dark Eldar fleet, it is unknown how long the depraved Dark Eldar had kept the dreadnought alive, torturing the space marine interred within the suit of dreadnought armor.  The Archon of the fleet no doubt kept it as a prized pet.

Despite millennia of wear and the damage caused by the foul Xeno, it was clear that the Contemptor was of Imperial Fist origins.  The Gothic scrawl on the suit named the Marine as Sebastus.  The ability to repair its complicated systems was lost millennia ago although Master Techmarine Grechk has managed to keep vital systems running for the three centuries which the Emperor’s Dragons have kept the relic.  One of the few systems repaired was the vox-caster, although the majority of the time Sebastus merely screams – in anger, pain or simply from madness no one knows.

It is not clear why Chapter Master Kheyas keeps the dreadnought a secret from his Brothers aboard Phallanx,  it goes against everything he and his Chapter stand for, but rumours are that he has spent years at a time attempting to gain information from the relic of the Heresy.  Given the chapters want to gather intelligence about enemies and friends alike, perhaps he hopes it will divulge more than the screams and moans of one in an eternal nightmare.

Force Layout:

Rule over the Emperors Dragons chapter falls to the Chapter Master and his myriad of advisors and support staff.  These are made up partially from company masters but also General Bron Haar (the commander of the standing Infantry unit, Turkhan Infantry) the heads of the Apothecarion, Armoury and Librarius.  Some company masters carry titles from the Codex Astartes such as Master of Recruits while others carry specific titles known only within the Chapter such as Master of Secrets or Keeper of the Emperor’s Oath.

Ten companies make up the majority of chapter.  Although each company can, and does, fight as a separate unit. Their flexible nature and the multitude of zones in which they fight often means that squads from different companies are assembled together in order to execute a mission.  The 10 companies are separated into 5 distinct groups.

Oath Governors - The 1st company fights less than the others as they are Oath Governors and are away from the chapter, in charge of their own fleet, maintaining the oath of the worlds that have swore to the emperors grace.

The 1st Company is watched over by Lord Thorus,  the Keeper of the Emperor’s Oath.

Battle Companies - The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th companies are the battle companies, providing the backbone of the chapter and the core of any prolonged engagement.  They are counted upon to bear the brunt of the fighting.  Brothers Crevan, Ignacio, Belsarius and Alabastor are the Company Masters.

Assault Squads – The 6th and 7th companies are typically equipped with jump packs although each member is highly trained to drive or fly any vehicle in the chapters armoury.  The assault squads are used to close quickly with the enemy and often engage in close range or hand to hand combat.  Company Master Sung el’ Yoon maintains watch over both companies.

Reserve Company – The 8th company is led by Master Andreius and holds the reserve marines.  These are mostly made of those who have passed from Scout companies to being a fully-fledged marines.  The company mostly is used as casualty replacement but also is deployed to help flank enemies or stem weak points.  It is expected that the majority of manual labour required for any humanitarian work is mostly undertaken by this company.  The Chapter believes that the experience of seeing what the ravage of war does, up close and personal, helps to instil the sense of humanitarianism that the chapter is so well known for.

Scout Companies – The 9th and 10th companies are fully comprised of scouts, those that have shown they have what it takes to be a Space Marine.  Both companies are led by Brother Nagatima the Master of Recruits.  Not only does the chapter use scout companies to weed out those not strong enough of body and mind to be one of the Emperor’s chosen, but also as a highly tactical and flexible forward scouting unit.  Often scout squads are onsite anything up to several months before the other companies arrive and the intel gathered is invaluable when deploying into battle.

Solid premise, Dragon. I particularly like the detail you have for their home system. My only suggestion right now is just some organizational stuff. It feels out of sequence to introduce homeworlds and a chapter secret before the introduction proper.

To create a more natural flow of info, I'd suggest Introduction > Founding > Home World > Oathworlds > Fighting Style > Beliefs > Secret and the Force Layout could be plugged in at the end where it is, or maybe an earlier spot.

Anything particular you are interested in workshopping or getting feedback on?

Thanks for replying! I have a pretty complete organisation list already, I just hadn't included it yet!  I agree that perhaps my ordering is a little off, I shall update it and also include the organisation list...tbh I have even gone as far as working out which models will represent which ICs or units.

Obviously I'm interested in general feedback, I suppose opinions on my background and the oath taking part of it would be good as I know that  firstly I'm doing something a little different than normal and also I'm relying on a lot of historical fluff which...if I'm wrong on...I would hope someone could correct me on.  Also this is an idea I came up with maybe 3 years ago but shelved as I fell out the hobby, now I feel I'm back and want to give this army a go but I'm worried that the more recent changes and now the new codex might throw it off.

Now that you mention the significant historical fluff, that does raise a question that bears addressing somewhere in the article: How does a 13th founding chapter find/develop the conviction the Dragons have about the Emperor's beliefs? I know that it's uncommon for Astartes to revere the Emperor as a god, but the Imperium being what it has for many centuries by that point, it seems like it would be difficult for the unfiltered Emperor's truth to reach that far.

A good start. Further editing will help communicate your ideas to us readers. For example, the fact Kapela Tertius is locally known as "Suum," and that it's the Chapter recruiting world, are ones that should be made know in the List of Planets in the Kapela System.

It is not clear why Chapter Master Kheyas keeps the dreadnought a secret from his Brothers aboard Phallanx,

Is the "Phallanx" the Chapter's fortress-monastery on Suum? The name is too similar to that of the Imperial Fists fortress-monastery, and intentionally misspelling "phalanx" won't fool anybody. May I suggest the name Schiltron (Old English for "Shield Troop"), Keil (German for "Wedge," if you want the Chapter culture to be Viking-inspired), or Testudo (Latin for "Tortoise," if you want the Chapter culture to be Greco-Roman), instead?

it goes against everything he and his Chapter stand for,

WHAT does this Chapter stand for? The fact you put the "Chapter secret" BEFORE details on its beliefs, means readers won't get the answer without skipping ahead- requirements that can and will make less patient readers quit from sheer frustration.

but rumours are that he has spent years at a time attempting to gain information from the relic of the Heresy. Given the chapters want to gather intelligence about enemies and friends alike, perhaps he hopes it will divulge more than the screams and moans of one in an eternal nightmare.

Why would the Chapter Master be so obsessed about "information from the relic of the Heresy," to the point he'd violate his Chapter's greatest rules to do so? And wouldn't a Librarian- maybe even a Librarian Dreadnought- be a better source of information, as the ability to predict the future IS a psychic power?

I've updated the OP and added the force org.

That is a fair point and I guess I don't have an exact answer, its something I have tried to leave lots of little breadcrumbs about.  Yes, its a 13th founding, but that founding is supposedly from a 1st founding chapter...and I personally feel that its more likely to be the sons of Vulkan if anything. I have added in bits like the Fists Contemptor dread, perhaps that has given up some answers that have led the Dragons in one way or another.  Also there is the philosophical thoughts the chapter runs on, the whole idea that if the Emps could have designed them to be purely killing machines and they hadnt.  I suppose as well the issues with the ecclesiarchy could be seen as perhaps this chapter has seen/knows things that they'd rather it hadn't/didn't.

I will have a think about how to better integrate it.

Thanks for the reply.

Fair point, I will update the planet list.

I was referring to Phalanx, the IF fortress.  I was suggesting that this chapter hold this relic as good as against its will and in secret from the chapter who are their brothers...as all space marines are brothers to eachother.  I will try to reword the paragraph better.

I have reordered the sections now so hopefully that helps.

Well, it is a secret of the chapter.  There must be a reason why he is obsessed and why he interrogates it himself....

As the Dragons are NOT known as an Imperial Fists descendant, the Fists will NOT tolerate the former keeping secrets in the Phalanx- secrets that WILL be revealed, as the tortured-to-insanity Dreadnought is being kept in the Fists' own fortress-monastery!

Put yourself in the Imperial Fists Chapter Master's shoes. Will you tolerate Marines from a Chapter of unknown heritage, sneaking around and doing Emperor-know-what in the fortress-monastery your Primarch built for you and your brothers? For all you know, the "Emperor's Dragons" may be Alpha Legion infiltrators, and any Crimes Against the Imperium the latter commit aboard the Phalanx, will justifiably bring the Inquisition's wrath upon the fortress-monastery, and eternal shame upon you and your brothers for allowing that to happen!

If the Dragons Chapter Master wants to interrogate the Dreadnought for Horus Heresy-era secrets, he best do so in one of the Dragons' own fortresses.

That's the point Dragon is making, the reason it's a secret. They know that it would not be tolerated. The line that you initially referred is saying that that the Dragons are keeping their find a secret from the Imperial Fists. The line in question:

It is not clear why Chapter Master Kheyas keeps the dreadnought a secret from his Brothers aboard Phallanx,

What it's saying:

No one in the Emperor's Dragons who is aware of the dreadnought knows why the Chapter Master hasn't revealed it's existence to the the Imperial Fists (his brothers aboard the Phalanx).

It's not meant to suggest that the dreadnought is kept or interrogated inside the IF's own fortress.

Hail Emperors_Dragon and welcome to the B&C. You've really hit the ground running by starting off with a IA post.... I salute you:thumbsup:

It's a very good start and I like what you are doing with your chapter. Here's my two cents for what it's worth...…

Founding: Thirteenth Founding heh?:dry.: Hope you have something interesting in mind behind this, otherwise seems a bit undeveloped.

Homeworld/Oath Worlds: Nice work. Good moderate level of detail. Looks well thought out.

Fighting Style (Combat Doctrine): Overall a solid doctrine. I do have a few questions and one point of contention on practical execution that I'll go into detail

when I get to the Chapter Organization section.

Chapter Beliefs: Solid on this..... Not dissimilar to Roboute Guilliman's own beliefs. He would commend you on that.

Chapter Secret: And a dangerous secret it is too, even on the surface. I'd wager that most Space Marine chapters (especially the Imperial Fists and their

Primogenitors) would be outraged by this to the point of bearing arms against you. I hope it is justified...… will make for some very interesting

background material for your chapter, if well thought out.

Force Layout/Chapter Organization: On the whole it looks good. I like the idea of the 1st Company Oath Governors.... very interesting concept. Having veteran

squads directly attached to your Battleline companies is very doable. One Devastator Squad per line company and one

Tactical Squad assigned Land Speeder/Bike duty is workable.

Two Scout Companies seems a bit excessive unless one company is dedicated to Special Ops missions. Even then it still

seems excessive for a single chapter. One Scout Squad can be divided into two independent combat teams. This can

effectively double the size of a single Scout Company to twenty units.

The biggest problem I see is a complete lack of a Heavy Weapons Reserve. The Battleline Devastator Squads cannot provide

fire support for all chapter operations. Land Speeders and Bikes can provide only limited support with Heavy Meltas and Bolters, but

that's no substitute for tanks and artillery or even extra devastator support. I understand the Chapter's sensitivity to civilian

casualties, but you will also be critically limiting flexibility and will in some cases increase casualties through unnecessary attrition

and mission failure against unforeseen factors.

On the whole your IA looks good and just needs a few tweaks. However, this is your chapter and you must proceed as you see fit. All I offer here are just suggestions. Good luck and have fun.

Just an update based on my reading of the new Codex: Space Marines.... Structure of the 10th Company has been changed to account more clearly for integration of Primaris units. The expansion of the company has at it's core ten Vanguard Squads (includes Suppressors, Eliminators, Reivers, and Infiltrators) and support of Invictor Tactical Warsuits and Impulsors. You also still have Scout Squads, of which you can have as many or as few as you need (Codex points out that there is no specific number).

This effectively makes the 10th Company your go-to Scout, Recon, Spec Ops unit that you can fit everything in that you may have wanted with two Scout Companies.
