Do you paint how you like or for appropriate legion?

Just curious how you paint your armies. Do you paint each unit as the appropriate legion color scheme or do you paint them the way you want and then assign them as certain legions regardless of the color scheme?

Just wondering...I want to paint my army in colors that aren't the same as the legions I plan to run them. Example...I love the World Bearers red and silver and Alpha Legion's blue...but I don't want to run my army 100% as either. Would it be in bad taste or even completely unacceptable to paint an army in one of those color schemes but then assign units to different legions? Such as Alpha Legion blue but assigned as Black Legion? Or blue World Eaters?

In my meta (Seattle area) it's perfectly acceptable to run an army as anything, regardless of what its color scheme indicates.

Having said that I personally prefer to run my DG as DG, NL as NL, and WE as WE.

Next month starting with my Defiler Deffy I'm planning on starting a small 4th army of CSM called the "Warpborne." They will be painted green and black with some gold and rust tones. Since they aren't associated with a particular legion I plan on running them as various legions such as WB, BL, etc.

Why not do them in the schemes, then give them the appropriate shoulder iconography? Fluff them as defectors or splinter warbands.

If you're going to switch between Legion rules regularly, I would advise painting them in your own non-canon scheme. Then no one can try to nitpick you for, for example, playing blue-green Word Bearers.

If you want to make a scheme of red and blue with silver trim...there's not a lot of that combination in Chaos so it will be pretty distinctive too.

What IFF said. I am totally fine with people using their own schemes as any Legion or Warband, even if they change between games, but if I see Word Bearers on the tabletop I think it is reasonable to expect them to be Word Bearers. There are some grey areas - e.g. somebody wants to play Sanctified, Khornate Word Bearers, which are themed appropriately and run using the World Eaters rules - but generally speaking I don't think it is too much to ask.

That being said, you should really just ask your local gaming group, as their opinion(s) is the only thing that matters here.

My Death Guard are painted as Iron Warriors, but the units I use are almost entirely Death Guard only so there's no confusion there.

I previously have used various red, black and silver colour schemes as World Eaters (or at least Khorne Daemonkin), Word Bearers, and Red Corsairs at some point in time. I've also had a blend of my red marines, Night Lords, Black Legion and a few odd one-off schemes on characters for a "Renegade" warband made up up multiple squads from different legions using the Renegade trait.

I prefer my army's colours to match the Chapter/Legion rules for them, but I don't really hold other people to the same standards. If someone wants to use Night Lords with Alpha Legion rules that's fine by me even though I'm not really a fan of codex/legion hopping for the new hot stuff.

In my opinion I'd say make up your own scheme then use whichever Legion you want. I think a red and blue quartered scheme (Brazen Claws chapter, but eeeevil!) with metal trim could look decent, and covers all your bases.

In Aaron Dembski-Bowden's Black Legion the narrator, Khayon, mentions that the Rubricae under his control are scorched black with warpflame, but that his brother Ashur-Kai keeps his Rubricae in the red armour of the Thousand Sons with just one black pauldron to show their allegiance.

So, for instance, you could run your Alpha Legion-blue Black Legionnaires in a similar way, just pick some way to show them as Black Legion. Blue World Eaters? I mean, they used to be blue and white, so maybe you can come up with a scheme based on their old Legion scheme?

Another thought would be to paint the rim of their bases in the colour of the "correct" Legion, as a guide for any opponents who want certainty. Black for Black Legion, blood-red for World Eaters, dark red for Word Bearers, et cetera.

There was an article on Warhammer Community for AoS painting standards, where if you had painted your Stormcast in a certain colour, they would have to follow that city's rules or something. This hasn't spread to 40k yet though.

I don't mind at tournaments - GW change the rules frequently and how you are incentivised to play quite often. Take Alpha Legion at the end of 7th. We were incentivised to take Chosen, then going into 8th, Cultists. Now I'd say maybe Havocs and possibly Lords of the Disco.

However, I've got a Narrative Event at the planning stage. Unless you've got your own homebrew paintscheme, if you want Black Legion tactics, you better have black minis with gold trim.

GWs GT rules (linked in that thread) says just that... if you've painted Salamaders then your playing salamanders...

Well, just so long as they don't make me play Soul Drinkers (40K's dumbest renegades - they think that their chapter master's growing spider legs was a sign that the Emperor loved them) because my colours are purple and gold. :tongue.:
