New Astartes Smash Captain (Terminator Edition)

With the new SM Codex and all the rules, Stratagems, WL Traits, etc., I think Blood Angels might have a Challenger for the best "Smash Captain" variant:

 

-Take a Captain in Terminator Armor with Storm Shield/Thunder Hammer with "Master-Crafted" Relic for +1D (sot D4)

 

-Have this Captain taken from a White Scars Successor Chapter with the "Hungry for Battle" and "Tactical Withdrawal" Traits (so, +1" to Advance/Charge rolls and also can Fall back and Charge the same turn)

 

-Give the Captain the "The Imperium's Sword" WL Trait (gives you +1A/+1S on the charge and the ability to re-roll charge distances) and then take a second WL Trait from the White Scars Supplement, "Chogorian Storm" (gives +D3 attacks on the charge)

 

-Drop down Turn 2, use the White Scars Strat to roll 3D6, pick the highest two for the charge distance which, alongside the Chapter Trait and ability to re-roll charge distances, means you have a very solid chance of  making that 9" charge.

 

-Once you have made that charge, the "Smash Captain" has 4A (base) + 1A (Shock Assault) +1A (Imperium's Sword WL Trait) +D3A (Chogorian Storm WL Trait) = between 7-9 x S10 AP-3 D4 attacks. If you use the new Space Marine Strat that gives a Terminator unit +1 to Hit, then all those attacks hit on a 2+, re-rolling 1s, so on average rolls you would have 8 successful hits.  Against an Imperial Knight, that means you would make 5-6 wounds and 4-5 Unsaved Wounds.... at D4 each, that is between 16-20 damage total on the Knight, even without using Honour the Chapter to fight a second time. If you end up charging that same Imperial Knight on turn 3 and have the Assault Doctrine on (i.e. -1AP to his TH), then the Smash Captain has an average of 8 attacks, 7-8 hits, 5-6 wounds, 5-6 Unsaved Wounds, and 20-24 total damage inflicted on the Knight, all just fighting one time!

 

There are other ways to refine this even more (i.e. add a Librarian to cast "ride the Storm" on the TDA Captain and give him an additional 2" to his charge for an even more guaranteed charge), but overall I think this White Scars Successor "Smash Captain" will be quite deadly in the competitive scene.

Because, number one, better survivability against massed attacks with no AP, number two, free access to Deep Strike, and, number three, most importantly, you only can use the +1 to Hit Stratagem (to off-set the -1 to hit from the TH) if the unit has the Astartes and Terminator key words. Don't think this would work because the stratagem doesn't give you a specific warlord trait but has you roll a d6 to generate another one to add to a white scars character.

Yes it does. It only says that if you did randomly roll, you re-roll duplicates

 

As for the OP, I think this is a solid choice, but just keep in mind that he will be slow because TDA is well, slow :p

I think the White Scars Relic bike would be a better option, you ignore terrain, and other models, have a 16” move, and toughness 5. That is also a 22” Advance, with re-roll charge for a first turn Charge.

 

Warlord traits: The Imperium’s Sword and Hunter’s Instincts - yes you lose d3 attacks but you hit and wound Monster’s and Vehicles on 2’s. Against a vast majority of infantry you wound on 2’s as well.

Surely you can't put two WL traits on one model. And if you can (with some broke as strat) there is no way its worth it for one turn of smashy. Still a very interesting combo of buffs however.

Both White Scars and Ultramarines Supplements have a Stratagem for 1 CP to give your actual Warlord a second Warlord trait. (Note: in the main Codex you can give a second Character a Warlord trait.)

Compared to lists that pour cp into a model or unit to help decide games? If you can negate that threat with the bike version and a turn 1 charge, or conservative play for a turn 2/3 with the terminator/jump version it'll be worth it.
