Greetings my Guardsman Brethren,

So I've been going back and forth on a guard army for years and I've had a hard time deciding what I want to do. I narrowed it down to 2 regiment's that I need to choose between and I would like advice on a 2k start list for both.

So first up is Armageddon. Love the fluff. Love the style, love the chimeras rolling forward and the constant ork fights. My reticence comes from the models the models being so out of date and the best alternative (death korp of krieg) is outlandishly expensive.

But here is my go at a Mechanized armageddon list.

Spoiler

My next choice is catachan. Really I dont know what's not to like but I'm not sure if the list is good or at least decent enough not to lose all the time

Spoiler

Not looking to crush a top table at LVO, but making buddies earn a win or even edge out one myself would be nice.

Plus please please please help me decide between the two.

Thanks for taking a look guys

I think the steel legion one would work better as a mech list. Yes the models are expensive, but you can use plastic cadian and just say they are steel legion.

The catachan list needs some work to be competitive I.e. less platoon commanders and priests and more bodies.

Have you considered Tallarn if you want the mech list? The ignoring heavy penalties on that many chimeras is something to consider.

Yeah I just struggle with using cadian guys as anything but. It feels almost like cheating...

What would you recommend for the catachan list? Drop the priests for a couple more guard squads? I'm reluctant to drop the platoon commanders because they get me some more orders which seem to good to pass up though I may be wrong about that having only played a small amount of guard in my life.

Just not a big fan of the tallarn aesthetic. That's what brought me to these 2 as I like theis aesthetics best of all.

Make your own regiment and decide what regiment trait to apply.

I decided to use necromunda models.

Although it's been a slow build as if I bought them all at once wife would go ape:cuss

I am creating a custom regiment, the Fallax Hammers based on Necromunda models. Please take a moment to view Work in Progress here

Huh. Honestly hadn't considered making my own. (Not sure why as 40k is a sand box) that's some good food for thought...

Orders are useful. But useless if there is nothing to order. I would drop 2 priests and all the platoon commander and out those points into 1 more company commander and the rest bodies to foot slog up the board (it is a useful and often intimidating force, especially with straken so all the guardsmen have 3 str 4 melee attacks)

While I am still undecided, in an effort to try and figure this all out I have redone the catachan list with more bodies. What are your thoughts? It does have 125 to spare so I can slide something else in or do some shuffling.

I figured implacable determination would be pretty good tho help move guys around the board but I am curious if you have other trait suggestions.

I'm also looking at a mech list for a homebrew regiment but that's not settled yet

Drop the power swords from your infantry. They're nice for catachan, but as Guardsmen we rely on the weight of dice to win. The Astropath should always have a Laspistol. You never want him in melee, so the stave is a bad choice that costs 6 points. Your bullgryns should have a mix of brute shields and Slabshields. Brute shields for high AP weapons and Slabshields for low AP weapons.

Next get another bare bones infantry squad and make a battalion with the tank commanders leading it. If you can squeeze in enough points, I recommend getting a 3rd Tank commander with a punisher. Give a battle cannon the hammer of sunderance. It's flat 3 damage.

So I followed your advice as that all makes sense. (Very used to marines where weight of dice is less a thing ai the power sword is often wise) and it added 2 points to my list so I dont really have the points to swing the punisher. I could likely squeeze in a third manticore or wyvern or add a basilisk. Thoughts?

Basilisks or manticore. You have enough mortar support.
