This forum and this topic has been created to help you to either register an account or regain access to the site.

CREATING YOUR ACCOUNT

Creating an account at the Bolter & Chainsword involves four basic information requirements:

• email address
• user name
• display name
• password

Email Address
Every account must be associated with a valid email address. Official notifications will be sent to the email address associated with member accounts. Attempts to recover access to your account will require communication via your email. Members may send private communications to you via your email address (this function doesn't reveal your email address to them, merely allowing them to fill out an email form that the system then uses to populate an email). The Bolter & Chainsword does not share member email information with third parties.
 
User Name
This is the primary name associated with your account and is the name that you will use (along with your password) to log in. User Names must be unique (the system will notify you if you attempt to register a User Name that is used by another account). User Names must be 3-26 characters in length and may use letters, numbers, special characters, and spaces (i.e., you don't need to use underscores unless you want to). The User Name that you choose may not be changed.
 
Display Name
This is the name that is shown to other members on the site and is the name by which you will become known. Display Names must be unique (the system will notify you if you attempt to register a Display Name that is used by another account). Display Names must be 3-26 characters in length and may use letters, numbers, special characters, and spaces (i.e., you don't need to use underscores unless you want to). Your Display Name can be the same as your User Name. When registering your account, there is a checkbox to exercise this option (i.e., you don't have to type the name in again). Display Names may be changed by the Administrators if they lead to confusion, if they masquerade as GW employees, or if they are offensive. When you pick your Display Name, pick it as if it will be permanent. We occasionally allow members to change their Display Name, though the occasions on which we do this are rare and are usually tied to larger events (site anniversary, major overhaul to the site, etc.).

A couple of things to consider:

• Any string of characters longer than 20 characters in length will throw board formatting off. The best way to prevent this is to use spaces to break the display name into blocks that won't disrupt the formatting.
• If your display name ends in anything other than a letter, the "member" BBCode won't work. The "member" BBCode is a handy way to link to a member's profile:

  There is no requirement for a member's Display Name to be usable by the "member" BBCode, so it's entirely up to you.

Password
Your password can be any combination of characters including letters, numbers, and special characters. The minimum password length is 1 character (we've tested passwords up to 50 characters, and it may be possible to have more characters). As with any password, you should ensure that your password is strong, including upper and lower case letters and avoiding words in the dictionary. You should keep your password private so that no one else can access your account.

Note that the Bolter & Chainsword will never ask you for your password.

GETTING YOUR ACCOUNT APPROVED

Automatic account approval has been disabled because we have a lot of bot/spammer accounts registered on a regular basis (over 100 each day). So the administrators have to manually screen newly registered accounts in order to filter out as many of the bots/spammers as possible. Two unfortunate side effects of this process are:

• Account approval depends upon administrator attention, so it might take up to 48 hours
• We might approve a bot/spammer account or delete a legitimate account

In order to facilitate approval of your account, you should contact the administrators as soon as you register your account. This will let us know that you have a valid email account and we'll be able to approve your account more quickly. We'll approve your account and send you an email letting you know that the account has been approved and that you can participate at the site.

If you have registered an account and don't know if it has been approved, please contact us for verification.

Unapproved accounts are usually deleted after 48 hours.

RECOVERING ACCESS TO YOUR ACCOUNT

If you no longer have access to your account (forgot your log in name, changed email addresses, forgot your password), please contact the administrators. We can work with you to research the relevant information and recover your account access.
