Hybrid Legion Force?

Hi all, I came up with an.... interesting idea for a force and was wondering if it's even legal to do.

Essentially, the idea was a force that combined Loyalist (Terran mostly) members of the Iron Warriors and Death Guard Legions [i had an idea for my loyalist 40k homebrew Chapter with this origin]. Because I REALLY LIKE armoured vehicles and also large amounts of durable infantry, of which both Death Guard and Iron Warriors have in spades.

From what I can tell, you can do this with the Shattered Legions ruleset, but I was wondering what exactly the restrictions are on the Shattered Legions rules.

Specifically, I was wondering if you can ONLY use the Legion-specific units if your Warlord is from that Legion? For example, if the Warlord is an Iron Warrior, would that disallow me from using Gave Warden Terminators, or with a Death Guard Warlord does that prevent say Iron Tyrant Siege Terminators/Iron Havocs?

I know that certain Rites of War are Loyalist/Traitor-only or disallowed for Shattered Legions (like the really cool Creeping Death one for the Death Guard, sadly).

TL;DR: I couldn't decide on my two favorite Great Crusade Legions and wanted to know if I could do both in an army.

In order to take Legion-specific units you essentially just need a character from that Legion (a Praetor, Consul, Centurion, or SC). If you don't have Book 6, you can find a relatively clear summary here.

I was looking at that actually, but the wording of it made me confused, because the way its worded on the 1d4chan page made it sound like it's only the Warlord's legion that you can get special units from. But okay, so I could easily do this then. Sweet.

Though this wording makes me.... Worried:

"vehicles are assigned to a legion by their paint scheme, even if they don't have LA rules themselves (aka no more unpainted stuff)."

Because the idea for this force was, due to them combining together, they have cast off their previous colours and chosen a new one to signify their unity of purpose.

Then you should have a look at the actual rules.

Besides you just have to paint your vehicle accordingly.

I hope you pursue this regardless, sounds like it could be cool.

Why thank you. I am, and I will. I just need to plan things out before I do it. So I'll likely get the red books and relevant black books for the fluff to make it better/more accurate.

Sounds like a nice project, Gederas, but if I recall correctly, there would be an issue with doing so: one of the rules of the shattered legions, as far as I remember, is that if the warlord dies, the units of different legions stop being considered battle brothers. Thus, you need to clearly represent to which legion each unit belongs. However, you might be able to do so while keeping an homogenized look, maybe just painting a common element to all marines or giving them a common symbol (ie: an arm+shoulder pad, like the Dusk Raiders did) while keeping the rest in legion colours, or the other way around, painting all of them with the same scheme but giving them the appropriate legion symbol and iconography.

I was thinking the ones that are Iron Warriors would be marked by the chevrons. Anything lacking them would be the Death Guard.

Apologist's force-building guide may be worth a look. If you can find a narrative hook for their name and icon, you'll be well on your way.

Uhh.... Where's that one again?
