New Painted Army Rules Inquiry

Hello everyone!

I was watching the Tabletop Tactics video on the new space marine book and they glossed over a rule that states that if you are using a color scheme from a known chapter you can only use that chapter's rules. I'm currently working on building the back story for my Imperial Fists successor chapter The Argent Fists.

What I'm wondering is if it would be allowed in tournaments if I painted Lysander int he Quartered Yellow/Black of my army but counted my army as Imperial Fists. Since they are not an established successor chapter, would this work? Or would I be better off just running the full yellow scheme of Imperial Fists and Just rolling my boys out that way?

Regardless, I'll be running the rules for Imperial Fists. I love the humble botler and Imperial Fists make it shine like no other.

So the actual rules as presented in the rulebook, codex and supplements are that only Imperial Fists are Imperial Fists and so on. But nothing assigns a colour scheme to that designation. If you've painted an army of clearly imperial fists but say they're ultramarines, then that's what they are.

What's causing a lot of confusion is warhammer world's tournament packet that dictates scheme=chapter. So if you played in a tournament there, you literally couldn't be playing imperial fists or taker lysander.

Ahhh gotcha. I better just make Imperial Fists then. Better to not be limited by such a rule in the first place. Also, I love the Imperial Fists so I'm fine with all yellow boys. :D

That's not right, the tournament pack ONLY disallows using first founding chapters as other chapters, it explicitly allows custom schemes to use whatever rules you want.

Colour schemes for codex chapters are actually pretty specific, so a fan made chapter with the exact same colours as the Ultramarines but with say a skull icon instead of the U symbol isn't actually the Ultramarine scheme and would get around that ruling anyway.

Ohhhh! So I could go with my Quartered Yellow & Black wtih White Fist scheme and call them Imperial Fists for tournaments and not be met with scorn and rules lawyering?

stick to the quarter scheme or half scheme, since you are still using the fist logo, no one will really argue that you are playing imperial fists.  The problem would arise however if you were fielding them as say blood angels, dark angels, space wolves, grey knights, ultrasmurfs, and inquisitiorial forces.   But a fist successor that will obviously show who there lineage is from shouldn't get any flack about it.  The main thing to remember however, if you are fielding different tactics for different detachements you need to make sure it is obvious which units belong to which detachment and this has to be noticable in your color schemes.    That isn't to say you couldn't just say all the guys with red helmets are part of this detachment using rules X, and the ones with white helmets are apart of the detachment using Rules Y.

Ahhhh k! Gotcha! I will only be using the Imperial Fists rules anyway so that shouldn't be an issue. :D

Thank you everyone for the clarification on this rule!

I can't promise that but you'd be on the right side of an argument if it happened unless the pack changes.
