Chaplain Venerable Dreadnought

CCE1981

Recommended Posts

Hmmm, is a Chaplain Venerable Dreadnought a good beatstick?

With Mantra of Strength, Veil of Time, Might of Heroes, and the Warlord Trait Imperium’s Sword, on the Charge he re-rolls charge distance, with 8 attacks, Strength 20, WS 2, Re-Roll 1s to hit, 4 damage, AP -3.

As White Scars you can add the Warlord Trait Chogorian Storm for another d3 attacks.

That for a measly 164 pts minus the Librarian.

Already have that covered with 3x Twin Lascannon Mortis Contemptor Dreadnoughts. A Relic Leviathan is also in the list to face tank any anti-tank shooting, I am playing with the idea of the Chaplain Dreadnought. Since I already have the Librarian he can just switch his buffing target. There is just a bunch of list fidling to make it work.

I am thinking about him as well.

In my opinion I want to field two chaplains anyways. One for catechism of fire to buff my at in the Form of ven Dreads (or make a Leviathan a serious at choice) and one with the charge litany.

He would of course be fantastic with Mantra of strength.

I am unsure wether I'd forego the catechism and/or the charge litany for that. Depends on the existance of deepstrikers in the list I think.

I am dreaming up a dreadnought detachment with a Chaplain Dread. He could go with three venerables with lascannon and Dread ccw or something like that. Or with ironclads. Of course I'd love to run my Levi as well, but I dont know what heavy choice to put on the board with him. Maybe a contemptor mortis or a normal mortis Dread.

This definitely looks like a good unit now. A dreadnought that cant be shot at is a fantastic option and has been very significantly improved by the new rules it’s picked up. Plus it still apparently gives everyone fighting its target +1 strength.

I agree with giving it lascannons. They’re not that expensive and are by far the most powerful guns it can have, so in my opinion that’s what it should have.

I’ve actually built myself one of these things. I expect it’ll see a table before too long. I think it’ll work really well with the intercessor horde I’m thinking of running - providing great buffs and being protected from return fire by their many bodies.

The Dread is very good. He's a solid support HQ and beat-stick character.

He's probably best with buffing himself for extra strength with the appropriate litany. The Twin Las Cannon is the best choice as it keeps him useful even at range.

He's actually a cheap alternative to a Guilliman style cc character, obviously without the auras but you can get those elsewhere now.

Plus he can have his own Captain aura for 1CP thanks to Wisdom of the Ancients, making buffing characters less needed - especially with a baby-sat gunline (eg, some Devastators or Mortis Dreads)

I think they are superb now. They are characters which means targeting them is very difficult. Litanies gives them so many options, they are be a beatstick monster hunter, buff other melee units or shooting units. They also are venerable and have access to the two excellent dread strats. A chaplain dreadnought with Imperium's sword and Mantra of Strength has 7 S18 AP-3 D4 attacks on the charge. Not much in the game can withstand that. And since he's a character he benefits from Only in Death Does Duty End.

One of the best loadouts is a successor chapter with master artisans as one of your custom traits

Makes the lascannon arm extremely reliable and removes the need for reroll tax (both cp or units)

Supreme command detachment with 3 is a solid core for an army

Would recommend converting one from a Venerable and a Chaplain head, or rocking parts of the Death Company and Venerable Dread sculpts for a more similar look to the original. You can convert a Crozius from the halberd haft off of the Librarian Dread and... I thiiiink the Chaplain Dread my regular opponent has uses parts from some Dark Angels kit for the Crozius. It's a big decorative piece that resembles a Crozius head.

Alternatively, eBay.
