I love my Grey Knights and I love playing them

I am under no illusions about the competitiveness of our Sons of Titan. But boy do I love playing them. I played against Imperial Knights tonight. I played extremely cagey and leverages the Grey Knights strengths as best as I could, and the game was really close! I lost, but my Paladins took out two Knights and Draigo made a clutch GoI and charge to singlehandedly destroy an Armiger. I've gotten much better at this game over the last six months as I've really tried to play Grey Knights as competitively as possible. We talk so much on here about how Grey Knights are in a bad spot, which is true. But I just have so much fun playing these guys and struggling uphill alongside them that I don't mind our out of date and flimsy rules too much. If we get an update soon, that'd be awesome. If not, I will still love painting and playing these silver boys.

Actually, GK got much better after CA point drops, bolter discipline and shock assault.

GK-primary list did good at ETC/ESC. It had allied wolves and dark angels, mostly characters, 3xhunters and 3xEleminators. GK really did heavy lifting there.

I still love my GK, but it annoys me how GW cut their main features in matched play - heavy magic and mass teleportation. Hope they won't screw it up, when our update comes out.

I like my GK also, but am so disappointed with how the faction works as a whole, I haven’t tried them after the shock assault update, but I just look at other factions and think why don’t GK have something similar?

Eldar and 1k sons have ways to mitigate a perils roll, have way better psychic powers. For being a psychic heavy army, all we do it cast 1 mortal wound?

It would be nice if characters got a full smite and everything else kept rites of banishment, and also maybe sanctuary and hammerhand being able to be cast by every unit, one or the other or smite. Would give us some needed Defense to a lot of our units.

It’s awesome that you love playing GK, would you mind sharing your list? I am always looking to see what people are coming up with in these dark times.

The problem with grey knights right now is double.

On one hand, they are the least competitive army by far, so it's hard to enjoy playing them in a competitive environment. Being slightly underpower is fine, it can be a fun challenge to play a "non-meta" deck and emerge victorious, but it is not fun when all your efforts and your playing skills are moot because any half decent player will beat you anyway because of pure unbalance.

That leaves us with casual play. In this aspect, grey knights' situation is even worse than in the competitive scene. Our codex is a rushed placeholder as bland as it can be. We don't have interesting rules to make the army feel unique or interesting. Our unique weapons are bad and unimaginative and the units are extremely samey. Playing grey knights right know does not feel like playing grey knights at all, it feels like playing some flavorless generic army with grey knight miniatures.

We need either an end of the year faq with big changes so we are at least playable or just a new codex to, assuming the desing team makes any effort, solve most of our problems. I could say that the new codex format (SM codex and chapter supplements) gives me some hope, but at this point that would be naive.

Grey Knights are still my favorite faction. They go into the Dark places and fight the worst enemies of Mankind and come out the other side.

Before they show up, the situation is hopeless, and all is lost. And the Grey Knights, always outnumbered and outgunned seem to snatch victory from defeat.

If you're talking about playing GKs casually / more narrative style with your friends try these rules out:

Feedback is these rules makes playing your GK feel unique and stronger at the same time.

As much as I like the sentiment Trevak that is not how they play.

For what was supposed to be an elite force of Emperor gene-seeded psychic phenoms with access to the Forge World Deimos for weaponry both the weaponry and psychic powers available leave a lot to be desired. Our Smite is nerfed in comparison to other SM and we have no access to anything that can dent a vehicle, no las, no plasma, no melta.

A now that Primaris marines have arrived we are on the backfoot for 2W models.

All that said I still play them and will continue to do so in the vain hope that when and if they bring out a new codex it will actually give us something that improves us rather than puts us back a further step.

I'm doing fine with herohammer builds with 3x Vindicares. Assassins eliminate key characters (if I don't roll 1's too often). They are a bit random, but they are beasts when I roll good.

I always tried to drop everything and try to charge, but now I shifter my strategy - mass smites and bolter fire all the way. BoRF is auto-take relic. I can spend a CP for Fury of Deimos, depending on match-up. I played against new ultramarines, necrons and tyranids. Lost only to SM 9-11 and it was very close game. I should've won if I didn't forget about Headshot rule for assassins. I run a stromraven with anti-infatry build (assault cannons, HB and hurricanes). It is somewhat a weakpoint of my lists, but I don't know, what can replace it. Sometimes it dies turn 1 and sometimes it goes almost unscathed, depending on the opponent's army, but it can easily eliminate an important infantry squad and be anywhere turn 1. I played against mass primaris infantry list (intercessor+primaris), triple doom scythe and genestealer spam.
