Absolutely bonkers. A minimum of four vehicles can fit in this aura.

 

Combine it with the Warlord trait and you have a very slippery character who can't be easily locked in combat OR shot because he's presumably surrounded by an escort of Dreads :cool.:

A Leviathan (a T8 unit with a 4++) would reduce a 3 damage hit that gets through to 1 damage. It's pretty crazy.

 

Remember that IH will have various methods to quickly repair vehicles on top...

Repairing seems moot since shooting at such a dread would be a waste of firepower.  

 

Assuming that IH gets similar special issue wargear, it might be possible to make a leviathan into a character that can then take an adamantine mantle for 5+ FNP.  Hopefully this is not possible!

I guess the units profiting the most from this relic (besides the Leviathan, that thing is just nuts) would be T6/T7 vehicles.

Those are prime targets for medium AT like autocannons and overcharged plasma - which loses half of its effectivity, against the targets they would have been particularly effective against. The heavier the AT weaponry, the lesser the effect of the relic - but a semi-bad roll even hurts the usual lascannon blobs, so it's still pretty much auto-include.

@Shas - just give it to a biker captain and surround him with dreads. His 3" aura would affect all of them.

 

Also, am I missing something reducing damage by 1, to a minimum of one, does not actually seem that great if you're going down to a hail of heavy bolter and plasma fire.

Plasma...you mean the plasma that may overcharge without actually increasing the damage per shot, just maybe the to-wound roll?

 

Agreed on the heavy bolters - though it takes a while to take down larger vehicles, which is nice when we get more repair options. And if your opponent uses heavy bolters on T6+, he's wasting a lot of shots that could have killed a lot of your infantry.

@MajorNese - it may be that his heavy bolters have no other valid target.  :wink:

 

My point though was that the relic looks great but against single damage weapons or even lascannons rolling a 1  it serves zero purpose.

That may be, but few factions rely solely on 1D AT weaponry - and trusting lascannons to roll 1s is not exactly reliable. In 5 out of 6 cases, the relic will work. In the case of the 1, it's a prime candidate for the CP reroll, as the shot has already passed the save.

 

Most opponents I've faced recently have a solid amount of 2D weaponry. It's cheap and easily available, reliably wipes out the increasing numbers of primaris, and will shave wounds off vehicles at a considerable rate.

 

So yes, I'd consider the odds quite high that the relic will have an impact. It doesn't help against the kind of weaponry not designed to take down vehicles, but anything remotely intended to take down vehicles will suffer. As it's also a bubble (instead of restricted to the wearer, like many personal wargear relics) I'd estimate it quite high on the list of go-to relics.

@ Ishagu - It's a good relic but far from "incredible", yes -1D is good and will make IH far more survivable but there is plenty of D1 plasma out there that DA players spam to high heaven.

 

Also with Devastator doctrine in play heavy bolters, autocannons and gatling cannons become useful, all powerful enough to chip 3 or 4 wounds off a dread each turn when used en-masse.

Yeah but the D1 plasma is typically shorter range, so units have to be close.

 

Is a Repulsor going to worry about 10 plasma shots that wound on a 4 or 5+ after a few saves and FNP reduce the damage further?

The tank will be left at optimum efficiency, will then shoot the unit getting close with all it's guns and get repaired.

 

Dedicated anti-tank weapons are still the method of dealing with vehicles, and they just lost some damage. If a Lascannon is doing 3.5 damage on average you can reduce that to 2/3 per hit on average. So you're looking at a 30%ish reduction in wounds after failed saves? And the FNP will reduce that further.

 

I'm not saying this is going to break the game (although the Leviathan may well become a major problem) but it's very, very powerful as a free relic!

It was the use of the word "incredible" :yes:

 

It's a good relic, not a game breaker and far from unbeatable. Just take out the character bearing it with scout snipers and the relic could be lost turn 1. ;)

It’s not a game breaker, but to put it in context, it’s a wave serpent shield aura. The various levels of damage mitigation (FNP and others depending on the unit) just make interesting possibilities
