Gotfret de Montbard

They got the keywords right on Gotfret from Blackstone Escalation, and I think he's second only to Taddeus in terms of how he fits into a Sister's army.

 

He's also pretty tough; 4 wounds, 4 attacks; other than that, I think he's the same as our standard crusader, except that when he rolls a 6 to hit, he inflicts two hits instead of one. He definitely has a place in my army.

 

Coolest of all, I really like his back story. There was an entire Crusade to get to the Blackstone Fortress. Almost makes me want to check out the BSF novel.

He's a pair of crusaders glued together with extra protection... but i'm not sure what role he would serve.

 

Still no bodyguard abilities, melee isn't going to scare anything (about equal to a single unbuffed death cultist), doesn't enhance other units, and like the gemini cannot take a relic sword.

 

Objective holding character perhaps?

hrm.... thinking about this some more if Gotfret is your warlord then he cant pick an C:AS trait as they are for AS characters (he doesnt have that keyword) and priests can how the righteous rage warlord trait ... but he's not one of those.

 

So he can only pick from the Main Rulebook 3 OR from the guard 'dex!.... crazy but true!

My plan is to put him with a bunch of non character crusaders. I'm not sure how this block will be organized- two units of 5 + Gotfret, two units of 10 + Gotfret. Much of this will depend on whether GW upgrades the battle conclave units with the new dex. If so, I will probably opt for two big units. I'm also looking at the Raging Heroes crusader lookin' sisters as possible model options. If GW gives me a viable option, I'll take it, but if not, it's nice to know there are other suitable models out there.

 

I will be able to drop this block into any detachment which includes a priest without worrying about breaking the detachment, so it's like a detachment within a detachment.

 

In terms of role in battle, I'm trying things that many people with far more actual playing experience tell me will never work. My idea is to use this block to a) hold objectives :cool.: reinforce other cc units any help provide target saturation during the approach. AoF are also getting an overhaul, so these guys having access to AoF may allow them some extra punch. I mean, 21 3+ invulnerable saves with built in healing capacity is tougher to shift than a lot of other things you might use.

 

Furthermore, if you're my enemy and I'm coming at you with a unit of arcos and a priest, a unit of crusaders and gotfret, a unit of repentia and a mistess [possibly in a rhino] and a penitent engine or two, who do you shoot?

 

My real reasons for needing this are more related to the campaign they fit into. The Chapel of St. Katherine's Aegis is the Spiritual heart of Aegis City, and a discovery will be made during the campaign that sees the entire world of Orison's Wake redesignated as a shrine world. In addition, there are six lesser chapels distributed among the eight Thresher Settlements that ring Aegis city in order to maintain the vast fields that grow food for the entire Desdaemona system.

 

In order to benefit from Territory in the campaign, each faction must have ground troops at that territory during the preparation phase of the current campaign turn. Territory can be occupied by characters, kill teams or detachments. The common methodolgy is to move in as a detachment during the prep phase, fight during the battle phase, and then, in the subsequent campaign turn, the detachment can leave a character, or kill team behind, while the rest of their detachment moves on. The detachment within a detachment effect described above helps here too- a battle conclave kill team that separates from its detachment also doesn't affect the composition of the detachment when it leaves.

 

This is why, once the cultists trigger discovery by the Sorotitas, they should be able to sweep entire settlements, lighting out from the chapel as a combined Sisters/ Eclessiarchy force to conquer territory and shedding battle conclave units and priests to hold it without weakening the command structure of the crusade army. This will be even more important when we hit the two settlements that don't have churches. We'll have to hit them at points of entry- every settlement has a rail yard and some have small scale airfields. In such settlements, there's no fortified territory that sisters can fall back to if the cultists gain the upper hand. I just hope we get kill team rules for battle conclave units soon.

 

What I've decided to do, in order to facilitate the inclusion of Blackstone Characters, is move the Desdaemona System closer to the Blackstone Fortress, putting it in the path that Gotfet's Crusade Fleet would have travelled through. Since we haven't actually started playing it yet, this retcon isn't going to break the immersion. I'm hoping to start playing before the end of October for two reasons: a) the release in November and :cool.: I'm actually going to try and use the campaign play as material for my November writing project. More on that later...

The crusaders last.

 

The new acts of faith may change things up, but currently arcos are every bit as durable against D1 weapons and do far more damage on contact.

 

Absorbing wounds via bodyguard for some big stomping karamazov type character or receiving power-ups from faith boosting items and auras is where they need to be... though the arcos getting some of their old bulk back so that they aren't in direct comparison with the crusaders and cultists would also help.

Yeah, they would look good as an escort for Karamazov, wouldn't they?

 

An yeah, that strat from the beta dex that buffs the arcos does make them pretty damn deadly. I hope they keep it in the new dex.

 

I just picked up Karamazov actually- got scared GW might let him go OOP, and figured I'd hedge my bet. I had always planned for his escort to be penitent engines, but crusaders would look really good supporting the throne of judgement.
