An undefeated Ultramarines list at London GT

There was three undefeated lists at the LGT and one of them was apparantly Ultramarines. As far as I know LGT was using the new codex.

So, what do you guys think of the list? Looks like pretty familiar stuff, or?

The player is Patrik Sanfilippo.

The list in short is

Girlyman in his own super-heavy auxiliary

Battalion

Chaplain w jump pack

Librarian w axe

4*5 scouts

1*10 intercessors

5 aggressors

2*3 eliminators

Thunderfire

2 repulsors

So much for double Battalion apparently.

I'm not qualified enough to know for sure how the list works and much CP he needs but assuming he's running Robot as his warlord he's got three extra CP there for a total of 11. Maybe he doesn't need more than that?

I'm also a bit surprised he didn't max out his squad of aggressors but given that he went undefeated at a large tournament I'll assume he knows what he's doing :)

He is likely running a 5 man aggressor squad because it is the largest amount that will fit in a repulsor.  He is likely sticking them in the repulsor turn 1 so they get where they are going and so that they don't get shot.  Then I'm sure he has them  disembark turn two and wreck face in the tactical doctrine.  With Gman's support.  That's why I run 5 man aggressor squads anyway.  lol.

It's quite an interesting list in that it isn't anything ground breaking. Possibly a good sign of the game turning to something a little more balanced, though it's early days.

The Repulsors are the key part of the list I feel. They give it an attacking element as well as a hard core to crack.

Makes me want to add a Land Raider to my own lists.

That's pretty much my competitive list, minus Gman. It's almost identical otherwise, except I use one of the heavy Laser Repulsor variants.

The disappointing part to me is the 4 x5 scouts. You just can't beat their efficiency. I still think they're better than Infiltrators because they're cheaper, throw away, and have a larger foot print.

It may be fairly early in the release but as it stands, I don't see much variation from this list in the future. I'm already crazy bored of Aggressors... rolling... rerolling, rolling again, mopping up.

Now I'm popping 3 Centurions (back to my old list) in a landraider.

The bad news is, I think this winning list is going to get trounced by Iron Hands.

I agree.  This list would get rocked by a competitive iron hands list.  Hard.  It just doesn't have the tools to deal with iron hands mix of strong offense and the best defense in the game.  I can't think of much that does really.

It’s too early to say this is the best list but that said we know it is really good. I can tell you Infiltrators are superior to Scouts it’s a matter of balancing points and you don’t need four squads either. For example they can shred armor when the tactical doctrine is activated hitting plus auto wounding on sixes and rerolling everything else with a Chapter Master or Gman.

This was the third ranked army and the top two were both aeldari flying circus we all love... he probably didn’t face either of these.

I hate that Eldar Airshow junk. It can't be longer than an FAQ away from disappearing if the rumours are true.

The next iteration of Ultra tournament armies (I guess) will be more aggressive. But UM as a competitive army may just disappear a bit once IH is out a lot of guys will be priming their blue/red models black. :)

Well yeah the points are key. If Tactical Marines were 5pts a model they'd be the best Troops in the game. Infiltrators can't come much further down in points because they are 3+ 2 wound models with 2 attacks base. That's the problem you see - you're paying for stats you don't really want on your skirmish troops there for the footprint. Hence why Scouts win out.

I had an itc 1750 tournament on Saturday with ultramarine successors douple repulsor executioner along with an storm cannon levi, one grav pod and the forgeworld chaplain dread, Leutnant, techmarine and 2 intercessors 2 infiltrator squad. First faced nids with 60 kraken stealers and gave them a wipe. Following game whas drukhari with eldar flyer spam. Was lucky and could seize the iniative and deleted his 4 flyer end of turn 2. Tabled him turn 4. In my last game i lost to knights because i started second and couldn't hide my repulsors. They fired again after dying but the knights made their saves like a god. Got wiped turn 4. I'm considering to drop the marines for cheap scouts and replace something with 5 agressors.

We are far more tactical than Iron Hands. Sure they are the new EZ mode rage now but tbch I think we can consistently outperform them.

I agree.

Skill floor for IH is high, but the ceiling is low. An IH castle won't do well against those Eldar flyers. They'll just tear the whole castle down.

Some interesting developments.

Turns out the player who piloted this list was a terrible cheater and awful sportsman.

A personal associate of mine has played him at another event shortly after the LGT, and he confirms the attitude was the same.

This video talks about this player and his foul attitude. A dark mark against the hobby community:

Yeah that might happen. It's a bad player culture that might be acceptable in certain gaming circles. As people travel more to attend events like the LGT you're going to encounter them more often.

The important information is the competitiveness of the Ultramarines in this case and I would like to focus on that ;)

I'm still re-arming (read painting) so I'm preparing for a tournament in November. Hopefully my performance will bring honour to the Chapter but also show a Brigade doing well.

I agree. As much as I despise people who soil this hobby for everyone by cheating and behaving like a-holes that's a discussion for another thread.

How is this list dealing with armour and/or knights? I can't see any dedicated anti-tank units in his list, are the twin lascannons on the repulsors enough? Or is guilliman used to deal with that in CC?

I'd say the two twin lascannons, Gman, and the interaction of Seal of Oath with the amount of high volume shots.

Assuming of course that the list stood on its own rather than being piloted by an alleged bully. After all, you can pretty much win with anything if you routinely play stratagems that don't exist ;)
