Recon squad tax to get a flier?

So, in people's opinions, obviously some legions will benefit more with certain ROW etc. But how do people feel about paying a "tax" of buying a recon squad as a means to get a Storm Eagle? I've heard that Recon squads can be average but a flier is always good. It definitely benefits say IH who can only take one FA with Head of the Gorgon. Thoughts?

I have an even better question:  What ?

First off, Recon Squads are hardly a tax. GIven the right loadout, RoW and battlefield role, they perform very well on their own.

But I guess everything that's labelled as a 'mere' troops choice is a 'tax' to some people.

Only so you know, troop choices win you games.

That aside, a fully kitted and combat-functional Storm Eagle comes clockin' in at 265 pts. in my book.

To view it as some 'awesome flyer' that excels at combat is rather silly. Every single flyer specifically geared for combat that's out there in the HH universe is better at just that - combat.

What a Storm Eagle actually is, is an awesome means to deliver a beefed-up scoring unit to the right spot on the battlefield at the right time. In other words, one of the most versatile troop carriers the Legions have. It's essentially a flying Land Raider with its armament, AV 12 all around and 4 HP to boot, which is more than any non-LoW flyer out there.

Nah. Jump units / assault marines can only be carried by a LoW flyer, and that's okay. Meaning, you can't compare apples to oranges. Neither in terms of transport capabilities nor in their respective price. Therefore, that comparison is lacking.

With the above advice in mind then, how would you guys kit out an objective grabber recon unit?

10 men with shotguns, power weapon on the sgt . it's about the same cost as a base assault squad only less punch but they could help clear dregs out?

5 dudes with shotguns and MB.

Works absolutely fine for me. I give the sarge also a Power Axe but I wouldn't recommand that. It's rule of cool only and seldom does anything usefull.

Maybe because I was comparing it to the unit it comes from, the storm raven.

I appreciate the responses people. I myself run WE so I've never seen troops as a "tax", they win me games. I was just implying a common discourse I've heard that recon marines are average was all. I'm happy to fill a Storm Eagle with recon marines for late game objective grab, especially since it's something my WE lack, troops to objective sit. My son's IH though, they're slow, bulky and blunt force trauma. A recon squad in a flier that fits in the troops section sounds great on paper

I appreciate the feedback :-) Like I said, was just sounding out thoughts on the idea

Why shotguns over bolters? Are the shotguns that superior over bolt pistols that is worth losing the ability to shoot at >12” range? Ive been wanting to add some more cheap units on the table for my I Legion, and my thought would be recon armor, MB, and maybe cameoline.

Figured out my main problem, the ibooks version of the red book has those shotguns hyperlinked as regular S3 shotguns, not S4 Space Marine shotguns. Makes much more sense at S4!
