Emperor's Spears in the new Dex

They can choose any of the successors chapter tactics. It's just if they pick the Inheritors of the Primarch, they have to choose Ultramarines. So you can still choose whatever successor traits you think would best represent them.

Exactly!

As a matter of fact, considering how the Emperor's Spears have been described, I would never pick "Inheritors of the Primarch" for them, because they don't fight like Ultramarines, so it doesn't fit. "Inheritors of the Primarch" would be better for like the Genesis Chapter or some of the other ones that closely mimic the methods of the Ultramarines.

Gotcha. To be honest I'm pretty confused about how all the extra rules and successors and custom tactics work now... Ha!

Simple!

  1. If you're <Ultramarines> you get everything!
  2. If you're an Ultramarines Successor <Chapter> (you can have Inheritors, or any other combination of two Successor Tactics, doesn't matter) you get everything except special characters and Relics of Macragge (you still get all of the Special Issue Wargear, and you can take one Relic of Macragge with the Honoured by Macragge Stratagem)

Done!

The Ultras doctine is going to help you move up the board while putting some solid firepower down. A group of veteran intercessors would fit in well and Adept of the Codex can help offset the cost of it (not on the Vet strat of course, but you can bring other CP back later). Extra points if you model them with chainswords to show off the extra attack. Aggressors are obviously big winners with the UM rules too.

You'll probably get a lot more mileage out of the customs CTs, but while thinking about this, I did have this beautiful image of using the UM CT and having two squads fighting in sync -- squad A is in combat, falls back, both squads shoot, squad b charges, falls back, both shoot, etc. Totally like that battle scene with Breac and the boys in the novel.

That entirely depends on your list.

I ran a list recently with three Land Raider Helios and Inheritors (plus a Chapter Master Walord with Calm Under Fire). Being able to Fall Back and shoot (with no penalty whatsoever) was incredibly good, especially since before the Codex 2.0 any kind of Bad Touch shut down their shooting entirely: I had a game against Tyranids once where Maleceptors kept charging others things then rubbing sensually (presumably, for a Tyranid...) against the hull...meaning they couldn't shoot :ermm:

Inheritors is also useful when using the Fall Back And Re-engage Stratagem, which only costs 1CP if you have Codex Discipline (ie, Inheritors). Plus, Marines still have, generally, more value out of shooting than melee - while Intercessors certainly can fight well, for example, they still have very good guns, and often the extra range is more potent than staying in melee.
