Need advice starting TS/Daemonkin

Hello insidious sorcerers and schemers. I recently got into Age of Sigmar with Disciples of Tzeentch and thought it might be fun to also play a Thousand Sons/Tzeentch Daemons army in the far future. I just wanted to pop off some starter questions since I have no experience with anything Tzeentch in 40k and no one plays them here.

1: My current army is Black Legion. I want to paint my TS as Black Legion members (I know, boo hisss). If I paint them in Black Legion colors but change the shoulder pad color do you think that's enough to set them apart if I play them and my BL as allied detachments?

2: For Rubric squads, is the cannon generally an auto-include? Do you like any warpflamers in the unit? I notice Thousand Sons have a few teleport options, do you ever use Rhinos with them?

3: If I take a Demon Prince, is it better to take one from the Demon Codex or the TS Codex?

4: Do you find Burning Chariots useful at all? I ask because I have a few and have no idea how well they perform in 40k. I play for fun so they don't have to melt tournament tables in warpfire or anything :P

Any advice appreciated. Try not to hate me for my loyalty to the Warmaster over the Primarch :P

Some quick bits for you, before the more experienced can provide the details:

  • Your models, your paint but even so this seems normal to me? That's how the BL work after all in having some of the black.
  • I don't think TSons have an auto-include as such, but it certainly gives their shooting output a boost for Rubrics. Rhinos are decent for protecting troops and ferrying them around, plus handy for some charging shenanigans to keep your Rubrics shooting
  • Depends on what you want to take for HQs and what access you want to certain abilities. If you're taking some Daemons the Prince is probably better with them as Sons can take decent HQs - but if you want to push the boat out what about for both? ;)

I think Daemons provide some number help that the Sons can make use of, so I'll be branching out into a small Tzeentch (that will probably become not-so-small...) daemonic force to help out too :)

I'll try to help out as well. I can give you some tournament based advice on what I face, but I don't typically play Thousand Sons competitively in tournies....

1. Absolutely. As long as the models are correct/accurate. I mean they are distinct by design.

2. I use one flamer squad once in a while, and quite often it disappoints, but using it within a Rhino does work since you can advance/flame and get the 3" extra from the disembark. I do use the cannon but that's because I like the look of it. I don't think it's worth it. The thing to remember is a lot of this stuff is just too expensive, on an already expensive unit. PLUS beta bolters aren't beta anymore, and it adds more value to the 2 shot at 24" AP-2  guns.

3. Good question. Since I prefer the 6" from playing pure thousand sons it's my choice, but in your case I'm not sure if you'd include a Tzeentch Daemon detachment as well? I would rather stay Thousand Sons in a command detachment and get the 6"

4. They seem awfully expensive, but I haven't used them since 7th ed.

Thank you. The color thing is really more of a courtesy thing for opponents, although why anyone would take Black Legion Rubrics over TS is anyone's guess.

That's a good point about the bolter rules and the cannon. I had thought that about Scarab Occult terminators especially.

I'm still not exactly sure the ratio of daemons to Thousand Sons I'm going with and I'm not totally sure what the different princes do, besides the TS psychic bonus.

Is the start collecting box a good deal? I only have a few Tzaangors and could always use more for both games, and I've seen Ahriman in a lot of army lists.

If you don't have Ahriman snapping up the Start Collecting box is a great idea - will give you lots to get going with and a good special character :tu: Unfortunately Ahriman makes it the savings less for future purchases, but still potentially workable. All depends on what you're after :)

Good point on Ahriman. Well, I don't have him so one box should work.

I had a rule question while I'm asking noobie things. I'm not 100% on how all stratagems function. I've read that you can use Daemon's Denizens of the Warp on multiple units so long as you have enough CP and don't violate the 50% points/units in reserve number because the Stratagem is used before the game starts. Is that actually true, and is the same possible with Webway Infiltration? I've never used deep strike type stratagems before and I was surprised to read that.

Stratagems are once per phase, but ones used outside of phases (i.e. before the game) work a bit differently so they can be a bit confusing as there seems to be less consistency. I don't have any books to hand but the OR might be a good place to ask, provide you with clarification and page numbers etc to confirm and so you can read up on them :tu:
